Coming up to winter and its harsh temps, I'm planning on giving my 2000 model 1.9 TDI and oil change.
I've carried out lots of searches on here regarding the correct oil to use and while there seems to be a lot of info available, a lot of it is quite old and most of it is very confusing.
What I really need to know is...what is the best brand/type/grade to use. I was just at the shop looking at Castrol Edge 5w30 and 5w40..the label states it's good for VW turbo motors, but it's fully synthetic and some posts on here suggest that it shouldn't be used.
I'm confused.

The pd engines use a specific oil that has an adxitive to prevent ware on the cam.
Everytime i buy oil for a pd i go to my motor factors and vive them the reg, they normally reply with 'you want the actual oil for it'
Alternativly go to tps and get quantum oil thwyll make sure its tbe right stuff
-
Thanks mate, but a 2500km (one way) trip is a bit far for a few litres of oil.
Local factors here will sell whatever makes them the most money...usually Russian.
-
Further to the above, I've been perusing the Castrol websites and it seems the choice comes down to Castrol Edge 5w30 (fully Synthetic) or Magnatec 5w30 (blended).
Thoughts?
-
Bit far. Ill go into my suppliers tommorow and see if i can get the specific oil. So theres something to go off mate
-
Much appreciated mate...I actually went back and checked the distance after I posted ....around 5400kms from here to London...round trip of course!
Living where I do is very cheap but things that you guys take for granted are not often easy to get.

I can imagine, i forget not everyone is from the uk on here haha
-
Get a 5w40 (some 5w30 have it too) with VW 505.01 approval for non-LL or if you like 5w30 or 0w30 with 507.00 approval for extended change intervals.
Examples of 505.01 oils:

and for 507.00 oils:
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-754-vw-50700-engine-oil.aspx
Sure you'll find some in BG from that list for a reasonable cost.....
-
Thanks for the links mate.
Interesting to note that the site recommends fully synthetic brands..I've been labouring under the impression that the blended versions were the way to go.
Some of the brands are readily available here and at a very reasonable price. ( Castrol, Valvoline, Mobil)
Because I drive very few miles every year, I change the oils by date and not mileage...about 2500 miles per year or every 6 months regardless.
Cheers

Fully synthetic for the PD.
-
Fully synthetic depends on definition, in the UK a HC (hydro cracked base oil) can be called fully synthetic. In Germany it needs to be at least 80% synthetically created oil. Difference between mineral base oil, hydro crack and fully synthetic has to do with which molecule chains make up the oil.
Mineral oil is a mix of whatever happens to come out of fractioned distillation, hydro cracked you treat the mineral stuff to break up very long chains, so molecules that make up the oil are more similar but it's still a mix... synthetic base oils are dismantled on molecular level and reassembled, i.e. giving the most uniform base oil with the desired hydrocarbon chain length. The more you treat the base oil the more expensive it gets....
Most oils sold as fully synthetic in the UK are only HC, some do have varying lots of synthetic oil in them.
In a PD diesel you need an oil with EP (extreme pressure) additives due to the way the injection system works (all driven by cams). Which only 505.01 and 507.00 has. You will find a lot of oils that sound similar to the ones with said specs because they use the same or similar base oil but have varying additive packages (which most oil companies buy in ready formulated from specialist companies, e.g. Infineum).
Just as a bit of boring bed time reading if you can't fall asleep.

I don't find it boring at all...if I don't know the answer or solution to something, I ask questions and learn from the answers. I find it all very interesting.
Thanks to all who replied.

Pd engine oil says pd on it in the uk. 5/30 pd goes in it
-
Thanks. I'll be back at the shop tomorrow for a closer look and testing out my translational skills...retailers here have a nasty habit of covering up technical info on containers with their own version, printed in the cyrillic style.
-
If it doesnt say pd on the tub its not got the stuff in it to prevent cam wear.
Im assuming tou have a pd of course
-
That's the first thing I'll be looking for tomorrow....
...on the other side of the coin, if I used the PD specific oil in my 1.9 TDI and it's not a PD, what would be the consequences?
-
Nothing. Its just to help prevent cam wear which there a little pro e to do
-
Cheers.

Just to clarify things...I spent a long time in the retail shop today, carefully reading every label on every container...not one of them mentioned PD engines. Specs on the labels listed things like VW 504, 505, 507, 505.1.
I'm going to go with the Castrol Edge, Turbo Diesel, Titanium 5w40 (505.01) and wait for the explosion.
Thanks for all your help guys.

The above oil arriving Friday morning...roughly 34 quid for 5 litres, delivered to my door from 100 miles away...is that a reasonable price?
-
Yeah, probably is...... you could get it a little cheaper here I think but it's still pretty decent.
-
Sounds about right. Might well be for pd engine anyway.
Just in the uk they put pd on. Obvously may not in europe
-
Thanks mate...as you can imagine, freight is the main killer for me. If I lived close enough to the seller and could pick it myself, the price would be around 31 quid.
I'm just happy I could get the stuff.
