Well I'm looking at replacing my 6 year old GTi 1.8T and received a price list today for the new MkV. That was several hours ago, I've just regained consciousness!
In front of me I have Skoda and VW price lists, check this out -
CD Autochanger - Skoda=?275 VW=?395 (+30%)
Cruise Control - Skoda=?125 VW=?270 (+53%)
Parking Sensors - Skoda=?200 VW=?295 (+32%)
Xenon Headlamps Skoda=?500 VW=?725 (+31%)
OK, OK, OK, it's a Skoda, but remember the various components are raided from the VW/Audi Parts Bins! So the quality should represent what I'm used to.
I checked out a Fabia vRS (?12,000 otr) and was amazed at just how many parts are the same as my Golf. Here are a few, Steering Wheel, Interior light, Mirrors (+the silly break off rotary switch), Indicator/light steering column stalks, etc, etc, etc. And it has the 130TDi engine!
What do you reckon to this? Are we being ripped off? If I buy a new MkV Golf now, will I be upset when the prices are reduced in several months time? Interesting approach VW........... ::)
Maybe I should just buy a Fabia vRS for ?12k, and use the "spare" ?8k+ for something else.

I think the general consensus of opinion is that the MKV is well and truly over priced. If I had the coin and I was looking to buy new or nearly new I think I would be going for the Seat Leon Cupra R, really nice car and still in the VW stable. :) I know VWs in general hold their values but you can't help thinking that the residual values on the new MKVs are going to drop really quickly. :(
-
LCR's have brembos too ;D
-
just been looking at the skoda site, that Fabia vRS is a bargain! buy one of those, a rallye, a mk1 and have some change!
-
The new GTi is just too expensive, and the optional extras are so obviously a rip off when you compare them across the other VAG brands. I've owned various Mk1, Mk2, Mk3 and Mk4 Golfs over the last 20 years, but really can't see myself parting with ?20k to buy a very bland looking Mk5. I would also question the quality of the interior trim and hard plastics, they are nowhere as good as in the Mk4.
Consider this, a Skoda Fabia vRS is ?12k as opposed to ?20k for the Golf, we're talking considerable amounts of cash here. Over 3 years, that ?8k difference would buy enough diesel to take you 100,000 miles! Maybe I'm just barking up the wrong tree, and showing my age! :'(
-
Not at all, I was all for going for a Mk5 GTi, but when I saw how much a non-GTi costs, I knew the GTi would be very expensive.
So I went Jap (sorry everyone) because the value is too hard to ignore, and no matter how good they've improved the driving dynamics over the Mk4, the MK5 GTi is never going to be as quick as where my ?20k has just gone.
(PS, me, JV and rich have a couple of project cars on the go, so I can still be genuine VW boy) ;D

wot jap car did u get?
-
Impreza WRX, gets here tomorrow (hopefully)

S11EPS, nice one, enjoy your Scooby! I too have abandoned the Mk5 GTi, and instead ordered a Skoda Fabia vRS. Admittedly not as much street cred as a GTi, but I'm left with ?9,500 change in my pocket which gives me a HUGE grin!
My new Skoda will be the first car I have owned in 25 years that will not have the VW roundel on the bonnet!
-
wots a skoda? ;D
-
A Skoda is a cheap Volkswagen, rather like an Audi being an expensive Volkswagen. Got it?
-
LOL i know, i was taking the mickey ::)

So was I........... Makes you think though, especially now the Mk5 Golf is so bland and uninteresting. A couple or three weeks ago Auto-Express (I think) published some photos of the new 2005 Polo. The rear lights on the new 2005 Polo will be exactly the same as those found on the Golf.
Now, has anyone ever seen, from the side elevation, a 3-door Mk5 Golf parked right next to a 3-door Polo? They are exactly the same! Look at the rear side window, it has the same contour. Check also the angle of the bonnet line, and the tailgate, and windscreen. The new Golf just looks like an enlarged Polo.
I've heard that this will be the last Golf, maybe VW have the eventual intention to merge the Golf and the Polo into one body style, called the Golo, or Polf................ ;)
-
are you kidding :o the last golf, were did u hear this from ? and yea wen u said that the new golf looks like the polo in the side view, come to think of it, it really does lol, surely vw is not gonna stop making the golf bein so popular :-\
-
Well I was told 2 years ago that the Mk5 would be the last Golf as VW wanted to introduce new models and the Golf just sat inappropriately right in the middle. That's why I'm thinking that the Polo and Golf will be eventually merged into one vehicle, and considering the Mk5 is just so similar to the current Polo I think it's now at a position where they can easily be merged into one.
How many years was it before Ford dropped the Escort name, completely revamped that particular market with the Focus, and resulted in the best selling family hatch year on year? The VW brands have become dull over the years. The Lupo, Polo, Golf, Passatt and Sharan are all dull, uninteresting and over priced. SEAT have produced Sporty and Stylish cars, Skoda have produced Cheap and Reliable cars, and Audi have produced cars to challenge the likes of BMW and Mercedes. VW have now launched the Phaeton and Toureg, what the hell are they aimed at? If you had ?50k in your piggy bank, you really would not consider a Phaeton because it's just a big Passatt (like a Skoda Superb), neither would you have a Toureg, you'd have a Range Rover. Just where are VW trying to place themselves with their high priced branding?

I'd love a Cupra R in a few years. >:D

I thought that the MkV was a great thing too, in the sense that VW was returning to the core market that the GTi appealed to, eg. 18-27 year old men.
However, the prices alone ?20 (UK), 30+k euro, mean that the car is being priced out of the range of the target market. Add also the long-term costs of maintaining a Turbo, and the fact that the car only takes Super Unleaded, and you really have an expensive long term prospect on your hands.
I would definitely go for the Fabia. It has got amazing reviews, and is faster than you think. ?8k is a lot of money - if you're financing the car, it's even more. Buy yourself something interesting with the change.
I drove a vRS Fabia two months back and was impressed. I'm probably the last of the anti-diesel brigade, but I would now be persuaded to change camp. I've also driven an Ibiza Cupra and could not believe how much more urgent the car felt compared to the Mk4 GTi. So if I was to go for the choices proposed, I'd take the Leon Cupra. Haven't been near one, but you can get one here (http://www.volkswizard.co.uk/) in great nick for ?7490.

I have a new MkV GTI and my comments now are probably very biased but I love it and think it was worth every penny. Got it in Metallic Steel Grey with only Multi CD as extra. It hurt to part with the cash but the car feels every bit worth it. The performance is excellent with power right across the board. For such a 'bland car' it certainly turns a lot of heads. I have previously owned a Scooby and have recently driven the new WRX and the Golf wins hands down.
-
just playing with the gti configurator and its quoting ?27.5k for my mk5!!
kinda think i'd pay the extra ?2.5k and buy a s/h Noble.
-
nah, pay 20k and and get oneof the ariel atom cars!!!
-
First post, so go easy on me ok!
I have a MK5 Gti on order after having both an Ibiza Cupra and Leon Cupra, and after test driving the MK5 there is no doubt in my mind that the MK5 is well worth the money, and I can tell you I paid more than the ?20k price tag you guys have in the UK!
Don't get me wrong , the SEAT brand has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years, as has Skoda, but when it comes to trade in time, I know which one I'd rather have. Add this to the fact that the new shape Leon is out at the end of the year and Cupra and CupraR prices will fall even further.
I simply could not believe the lack of turbo lag in the MK5 compared to the Leon, all the way through the range. It is a fantastic car. Expensive but worth the money.

and the rest now try speccing it up to anywhere near the sort of stuff that should be on a car of its supposed class
