Title: Built in Sub Box
Post by: Len on 08 December 2005, 20:01
I am just starting a little project to make a built in sub box in the rear wheel arch well in the boot of a Mk3 Golf.

I have only just started and am still deciding on the exact shape I want.
To start I lined the area with cling film then using a form of papier mache (torn up newspaper and wood glue) I have lined the back area. Have stiffened that with cardboard for now whilst I decide on the front wall shape.
Once that is all sorted I will then take a glassfibre mould off the back face, then strengthen that with MDF.

Might post some pics of the moulded up bit if anybody interested.

forget chicken wire!

Cover the area in masking tape. then cooking foil (apparently it comes off easier). Then fibreglass it!

The cling film is a bit tricky and you cant do overhanging sections.

Hadnt thought of masking tape Dizzy - but then I didnt want to use resins inside the car! Two reasons - 1. have left all the carpets in place and wouldnt want to drip resin on them! 2. Doing glassing in a confined space is NOT advisable! Unless you want to get very dizzy and high! Dont alf give ya a bad head after tho!!!

I have now glassed the outside of the shape and am about to start getting the front shape how I want it.
Will take a couple of shots 2moro to give ya some idea of the crazy shape it is atm!

This last one shows the rough position of a bit of plastic drain pipe that will form the port outlet!

Now I am glaassing in the plastic pipe port, having fixed the front MDF a quarter of the way up. This is a sloping section, sloping outwards, to give me more depth. Shaping the vertical front section where the speaker will be housed.

Thats as far a I have got for now - more updates soon!

Just thought I should mention my intensions for this box and the rest of the system.

Sony Xplod 10 inch sub.

A Sony Xplod 4 ch amp - dont know which one yet!

This will add to the Sony headunit (i forget which one, but its a 4 x 52 watt graphics/face off), the Sony Xplod 165mm 3 ways in the front doors and the Ditto 6x9's on the back shelf.
The new amp will run the 6x9's and sub.

I also have a very small amp that will fit under the console to power the fronts ( if i think its worth it!)

Thought I would update this.

Bit of trouble fitting that bit of pipe in but all done now. Taken off most of the glued newspaper now, so all i'm left with is solid MDF and or glassfibre.

Some pics to follow.......

Top - if ya wondering what the 3 holes are, they will be used to secure it to the car, using three big self tappers into the existing fixings.

Nearly there now!

Still got a bit of glassing left to do, then some filling and smoothing and painting.
Bit of Dynamat on the wheelarch side, which is only glassfibre.

The speaker hole is smaller than required. I cut it out so that I could seal the inside after fitting the front panel

Would I do it differently next time? - YES!

Was it a LOT of work? - YES!

Would I recommend anyone else to do it like I did? - NO!
Besides I like having something unique!

Oh yeah - still have to check out the speakers to make sure they are free to air and not designed for a sealed enclosure!

Whooops!

Anybody know about Sony 10" subs?????

I wouldn't worry - that's still a 'sealed' enclosure. Albeit, ported...

Thanks Dom - I'm never quite sure what the difference is anyway! And the sound waves do have to follow the baffle and up into the port. Bit like a conch shell or a horn.

Am I mad doing all this?

Dunno - I tell ya'all how it sounds eventually!

Was just looking back on this as somebody asked some questions and I realised I hadnt commented on the sound.

Its very good and I'm happy with it!  Its not a boom boom box by any means! But it compliments the rest of my system to give all the bass I need.
