I've got a noise meter on my phone and before my old tyres were removed i was getting 78dbs in the car. While not an exact science ive measured with my new conti 5s on and i get...... wait for it 78dbs. The noise between all the tyres tested is so negligible it's not worth worrying about. To the naked ear the difference between a dunlop on 68db and a conti 5 on 72db is nothing.

Lease cheap, pay twice. seems to be the order of the day with this car. Could a GTI/GTD be quieter?

So that's that.

At motorway cruising speeds, the GTD will be the quietest of the trio, diesels are no noisier than petrols once you get above 1500 revs, and at 80mph, the GTD is doing 2200 revs in 6th, the R is doing 3100 revs.

You haven't paid twice for anything have you? If you lease or buy, you're likely to end up with Flintstones, so buying twice (to swap them out) isn't a lease-only proposition.

Get yourself a Skoda Superb next time - the quietest VAG car I have driven, by a margin. Both my GTD on 18" Flintstones and R on 19" Flintstones were quieter at cruise and far better handling than my MK5 170TDI GT Sport. I do think some people have their rose tinted glasses on when comparing the MK7 with previous VWs.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Aren't all tyre test noise levels measured externally?

Auto Express and some others measure cabin noise.
Hankooks produce the least cabin noise.
Audi TTS Quattro  fitted with these.

Hankook the quietest.
Dunlop also quiet.
Goodyear has updated rubber. Considered a quiet tyre. New one next year.
Continental considered to be a bit noisy. Great tyre though.
Michelin PSS considered to be reasonably quiet. Best tyres overall. Expensive.
Michelin PS3 tyres very noisy and not that good.
Bridgestone tyres the noisiest and rubbish.

Continental CS6 fitted to Honda Type R. Size 235/35 R19 91Y. Very good Rim Protection.

Ok.

If the cabin noise, especially on rough tarmac roads (of which there are countless in the UK) is sufficiently spoiling your enjoyment of the car to the point where you no longer want to drive it to any great degree, and there is a clear frontrunner (Hankook) in the tyre stakes with respect to low cabin noise, isn't it worth swallowing the cost and giving them a chance?  Wow, that's a long sentence there!

What is to be gained by suffering in silence (no pun intended) for the sake of a few hundred quid?  Nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say.

I know you got the car on a cheap lease deal but it's still a £30+k car potentially going to waste, and for what purpose?  Thrift.

Asker, IMO (for what it's worth) you should swallow the 1st of the Seven Deadly Sins and get the Hankooks.  There are no guarantees of course, but they might just provide the remedy you seek.

Buying a hot hatch for a quiet and comfortable car with low noise levels...very logical
