Wont turn then clocks reset
« on: 12 November 2011, 18:38 »
Hi guys, when i turn the key on my 16 valve KR the engine doesnt turn at all and then the clocks reset. I tried it with my lights on and rather than them dimming they went off completely. Whatever the problem is completely takes all power and breaks the circuit.
Ive fitted a new starter.
Ive cleaned all terminals at the battery.
Ive cleaned the gearbox earth, cylinder head earth and battery earth.
Ive charged the battery.
Ive tried another battery.
Ive left my tea go cold and punched myself in the face.
Nothing works, any ideas?

Ignition switch. Checked that?

Over time the plastic wears so the terminals don't make contact when you turn the key.

Take the plugs out and see if it turns over. Can you turn it over by hand? Can you bump start it. Check cambelt has not snapped or skipped. A piston could be hard up against a valve.

could be a hydrolic lock, whip the plugs out and turn over by hand and if loadz of motion potion comes cascading out then thats ur problem solved. happend to a mates gte when his kids kept turning the ignition on and off without starting the engine, something to do with injectors priming

Ive just put the head back on and turned it over by hand so its not valve contact. I cant turn it by hand as it is cos the crank pulley and v belt would have to come off first but before i put it all together i DID turn it with no problems by hand.
What about the resetting clocks, isnt that an electrical clue?

To be honest the only reason i replaced the starter os because i broke the thread getting the old one off. Testing revealed that it was working fine. Exactly the same symptoms with the new one anyway so it wasnt the starter in the first place. I cant push start at the mo because its in my sisters garage which has a inclined driveway

well if you can get it to start with a push that will a least show you that it starts then you will know its from ignition to starter problem
