Wont start after being left for a while..
« on: 21 June 2010, 15:05 »
Ok..91 16v.

The car has been left outside since October as I have been running a company car.  Seeing as the weather has been great lately I popped outside to see if it would start.  It turns over but wont start.  Any ideas as to why?

+ Battery was taken off and fully charged before I started
+ Fuel pump primes and clicks
+ Fuel filter and ignition switch are new
+ Lights, indicators, radio and windows all working
+ Blower and Wipers not working but did come to life for a few seconds then died
+ All revelvent fuses checked and Ok.
+ All earths in the engine bay were cleaned and checked less than 12 months ago

is it any of the relays? or something else?

Thanks for the help

Jonathan.

Kjet needs 3 things...Spark, fuel and compression. Check if the spark plugs are getting a spark, check if the fuel injectors are providing fuel, and check that you have compression.

No its a J reg on KR.

Might be my distributor...its had a oil leak since I got it..the O-ring has gone..I'll get one from GSF tomorrow for £54 +Vat.  Also from my search I thing my Relay #18 may need a wiggle to get the blower & wipers working.

I'll also take off the air box and play with the air flow meter to see if that may help.

I'd check what I said first before spending £54 on something it might not be.

check the ht leads for spark,   if theres spark give it a dose of easy start see if it fires up.

if it gose then cuts  you have a fuel problem.   very worth diconecting the under car pump and seeing if the in tank pump actualy goes
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Nowadays they all seem to rely on sensors and electricity!

No not yet...I'll buy a compression tester tomorrow.

Other than having to replace the faulty ignition switch the car hasn't let me down.

There are a lot of things that need replacing due to wear..such as new discs and pads all round and all new suspension, front grill and lights, sunroof seal and throttle cable (to stop the rain coming in) new window regulator for driver side front, new LED's for the dash, oil change and filter, spark plugs and injectors, and new full exhaust system.

Think my credit card will take a bashing at GSF, but best get it done before VAT goes up.
