Do price up first, i managed to get REALLY and i mean REALLY good condition BBS's for £150 inc postage and brand new 30mm drop allaround for about £400, just look around n be patient. Golfs need love and patients and some times they can make patients by cutting hands open when trying to work in the engine bay) *GRRRRRR*

usually I am listening to my own pistons trying to make a bid for freedom through the sump

400 quid isnt enough to buy new alloys with good tyres.. best looking around the 600 mark or buy second hand ones..

Just be careful with 17's, double check the offset. 16's are the best compramise. you do get what you pay for. check edition 38 for second hand ones.

Don't wish to be rude but I would spend more than £400, for that kind of money your looking at budget tyres and poor quality wheels, my 17's were over £650 new with Toyos.

If you are going for 17"s the offset needs to be et35 or 38 otherwise they will rub.
