Title: What Size Is This? (MK3 Tuned ABF Engine)
Post by: DubSociety on 12 February 2010, 16:31

Can some one tell me the sizes of the custom blue Samco tubes used as the air intake on this lovely ABF, as theirs plenty on eBay but it's silly cold outside to go and take it off and measure it up!! Does any one know by heart?

I think its a 75mm 90 degree elbow, and a 75mm to 65mm reducer (not sure the 65mm bit is correct...working from memory...measure the airbox outlet to check).

I used some 3" SS exhaust pip to make the pipe part.
Bear in mind, you'll have to do something with the engine breather if you go this route..either weld on a 12mm stub and run the breather to it, as I have, or fit a catch tank/breather.

It adds no extra power though, after all that effort...we've back to back dyno'd it.

Actually, I believe either SFS (?) or Samco do an inlet pipe in colours to fit an Ibiza with an ABF...surely easier to buy the piece ready made?

Awesome looking engine! How much money and hours did that set you back??

Many hours labour in internal polishing of manifolds, modifying TB, porting downpipes and exhaust manifold...a bit of powder coating and blinging up.
Expensive Blydenstein head with bigger valve seats and re-profiled valves, titanium retainers, lightweight lifters etc.
Schrick cam/s
£2000-3000 over the last 10 years or so...

Plus the Jenvey 8 injector stuff over and above...

The VW motorsport (Gemini) semi-straight cut 6 speed 02A gearbox, very light flywheel, LSD, low FD etc...

No...
That's my path to the elusive 200+ BHP I've been after for years!

Stuck at 195ish just now...can get 200 BHP with 268/268 cams...but it won't run properly as the long duration cams cause pulsing in the plenum and throw the ECU all over the place giving crap idle, poor running below 4000 RPM and hopeless emissions.

268 in /std ABF ex give a good 195 ish BHP/160 ish lb-ft, with a good torque spread...fitting the exhaust 268 ex cam gives more power, but kills the torque low down...so it's quicker as it is.

I'm hopeful that once the plenum has gone and the Digifant 3.2 ECU been replaced with an Emerald K3, I'll be able to run the ITBs and 'bigger' cams to keep the torque, but give more power at the top...currently malking peak power at approx 6900...should still be pulling at 7500 with the new set-up.

A few plots of the current set-up:

196 BHP/159 ish lb-ft
(http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z72/Ess_Three/Dyno%20Plots/4thRun196-141BHP159lb-ft.jpg)

197.5 BHP/159 lb-ft

It means that a low geared, 190+ BHP Mk3 16v 5 door (badged as an 8v), with big brakes, properly set up suspension and a LSD can put a smile on your face at the expense of the drivers of many more powerful cars!

Top left...that's the Samco part, listed for an Ibiza GTI 16v RHD, and shown as part of the coolant kit. But I think they sell it on it's own.
It'll not make any more powr...but it looks pretty.

Can't see me ever selling it, TBH.

Newer, faster, more expensive cars have come and gone...but the old Mk3 remains.
Along with a garage full of half finished projects and a head full of silly ideas.

Don't blame you mate! Engine bay looks immaculate, I want mine looking similar ... Ive already got 10mm leads in their, when I have more cash and spare time hopefully next summer i'll be going down the powder coating route aswell and doing a few bits & bobs ... Expect PM's for help sometime in the future!! :)

Well the link is for MK3 Golf GTi.

Does anyone know where to buy them apart from ebay??

Im about to start tidying my engine bay up and have admired the standard yours is at Glen for some time, like the original poster of this thread im considering changing the intake pipe to something similar to what you have done. Going by what you mention in the required pieces to do such a task would the following by adequate?
I have a couple of questions...is that really a 90 degree elbow as the angle the pipe goes off at would say other wise or is this down to the way you've cut it down in length?
How long is the connecting straight pipe? Is essential for the breather pipe to connect to the straight pipe or could it be adapted to enter into the air box?

These are the parts of just sourced:

I made the custom inlet because nobody was making an aftermarket part at the time...and yeah it's a 90 degree elbow and a reducer.
But now, after dynoing it, I wouldn't bother again...there is no gain to be found. It looks pretty, but adds nothing.

The breather could go anywhere I guess...it was trial and error.

None of the above.

2.0 16v NA Lehmann engines, re-worked standard heads (probably bigger valves), forged internals, revving to 8500+ RPM, CR of 13:1 I'd guess, solid lifters and 300+ degree duration cams with I'd guess around 13.5mm lift, and throttle bodies.

Nothing you can't do yourself...if you have the money, and want ro rebuild it twice a year.

I have the VW Motorsport Kit Car Cataloge somewhere....some tasty parts in there. Unobtainable, of course!

Lehmann will still build you one...it's the suspension and gearbox stuff you struggle for nowadays.
Wheels, brakes, dampers etc are all readily available...the Gemini gearboxes are not, same with the rear beams, front hubs etc.

EDIT:
Just checked the catalogue:
12.8:1 CR, 8000 RPM, 260BHP NA, with a catalyst, running Bosch Motronic and 48mm vertical pivot ITBs, 8 injectors, and a closed airbox.
90mm x 84mm bore/stroke.

Price listed FROM DM 250,000
