Haldex service?

Have any of you mk8’ers had or been told you’re due a front Haldex service yet?

I dropped my car into VW for investigation into the bongs last week and was ‘treated’ to an ‘express visual inspection’
On the traffic light system they use there was mention of the front tyres needing replacing, an ‘overdue’ aircon service both mentioned in December at the 2nd service, and now ‘overdue’ front Haldex service. I literally only just noticed the latter when filing the paperwork away after washing the car.

The car is 26 months old, 18k miles.


Are VW piling on extra ‘necessary’ work for purely revenue purposes to make up for the lack of cars coming through from the factory?
I’m sure previously the first brake fluid change used to be three years and now it’s two.

I had an email saying I need a brake fluid service carrying out. Came through on Friday. I got my car in may 21.

@Exonian; yes, brake fluid used to be at three years for the first change, then every two years thereafter. I’d read on other VW forums that the first is now due at two years. Dealer didn’t mention anything when I had my car serviced at two years old in September last year, so maybe it’s a very recent thing.

I can remember when VW’s service plan used to be a three year plan and it included the first brake fluid change (at three years). That was a good few years ago though.

Haldex? I thought that was the clutch between the gearbox and rear differential on the Golf R? I’m guessing as they mentioned “front Haldex” it’s also their name for the LSD?

I presume it’s only an oil change, whilst probably worth it for longitivtiy of the LSD, I bet they charge well for it?

I’m in the midlands, so lucky to have specialist garages around that are usually more competitively priced. There’s one in Rugby called VASStech that gets good reviews and are specialist for VAG cars. This was my intention for the Golf, I also use a BMW specialist now as it’s half the price and better service.

The servicing is better than the “sealed for life” approach that other manufacturers have, this is purely to sell you new parts later, especially BMW with their rear differentials. The only advantage to this is, it’s not on the service record so you can change the gearbox and (if separate) diff/LSD oil yourself for a fraction of the cost…. But, the common driver won’t do this because they listen to the manufacturers who tell them a gearbox can do a lifetime on the original oil.

Hmmm, so following reading many posts over the last 2 years about “servicing” the VAQ diff, I told my dealer it should be included in the Major service to be done in Jan 23.

Of course, they pushed back and said it did not come on the official VW job list and the units were Borg Warner “sealed for life”. They even referred to the workshop techs who said they would do an external visual inspection to reassure me.

Despite my challenge they insisted it’s not a thing and I should be reassured that as long as I got servicing by official VW dealerships, all is well warranty wise.

I finally gave up but if any of you have taken a deep dive into this subject on several forums you will know my experience is not unique. Also that the official VW advice varies depending on the national territory in question. I even showed the dealer some pages printed off various forums to support my concern.

This is just sooooo bizarre.

Above is the principal reason I stopped using a main dealer the day my warranty ran out. Lucky I have a highly recommended local GTI independent specialist in the nearest town.

VORDERACHSQUERSPERRE is probably a bit of a mouthful for the techie to spell!! 
But yes, it’s basically a side to side version of the mk7 R’s Haldex diff going between the front wheels instead of ‘twixt front and back axles.

I do know a very very good indie who I used for many years but I do prefer to keep my servicing done at main dealers when under warranty.

They quoted £99 for the oil change, I’ve no idea what an indie would charge but I doubt it would be masses less (probably do a better job though!) and at least done at VW means there’s absolutely no argument from them if ever a warranty claim arises.

Maybe they’ve changed it. I’ll ring them this week and query it.
I could understand 2 years or even less if the car was used on track or driven hard. My car is driven by a trainee geriatric who spends most of his time stuck behind a fully fledged geriatric on slowish roads.
Yes, I have no idea why I don’t just buy a base model Hyundai either…

Would be interesting to hear what they say Exonian...

Wouldn't surprise me if the service schedule had changed.

What is quite surprising is that they actually have it on the schedule - on the Mk7's they mainly seemed to fail to mention it needed doing at all and often even argued it was sealed for life...
