Golf mk8 / Re: Gti suspension with 19”

Looking at my car on "MyVW", you can see all of the build features.... (a bit like decoding the sticker in the boot from years gone by)

I can see:

Progressive steering for 19-inch alloy wheels
Adaptive Chassis Control DCC (for 19-inch alloy wheels)

That's from a list which is the factory effectively.

Both the CS and the R had at some point the same thing appear on the UK configurator, if they don't now then its because of some stupid thing - not unusual.

Most definitely Mk8's come with different components beyond the wheels and the winglets for factory fitted 19's.

I am almost certain it does. In Greece the base gti model comes with 17" and i think i read somewhere springs are different when you go for 19" to add more clearance to the wheel and suspension and maybe damper's valving too. I ordered mine with 17" and was wondering if i would run into issues if i upgrade to 19" later on.

Does this mean you can't take a car with factory fitted 18 wheels and put 19s on?

We've debated this before.... and all I can say is that you obviously can fit 19's to a car built for 18's but there are differences to a factory 19 build.... are those so bad to make it undriveable? Of course not.

On a Mk7 you had one setup for a car with 17's, 18's or 19's - from the factory.

The Mk8 just has some optimisation for factory wheel sizes.

Other than someone writing some posts as you, what is the risk?

Golf mk7 / Re: Droning noise at 70mph...

New rears is probably the only way of fixing the noise - its just a Mk7 Golf thing.

The rear of a Mk7 hatch is super light, you won't use up the tyres before the saw tooth gets them.

Just swap them out... or if you want to be totally @nal about it.... when you front tyres are shot, get new ones and stick them on the rear. Move the rears to the front.

Putting the newest rubber on the rear isn't actually such a bad idea anyway.

I was getting about 14k from the fronts and as I said, the rears more like 60k. Rotating the tyres like I suggest will mean you'll never develop the drone.

I could be wrong about the spoiler.

Remember WLTP now means that the co2 figure is for the exact options list.

If you are looking at a bog standard CS, it has 18's.... and the ED45 has 19's. That will mean the mpg and co2 will be worse for the ED45.

Ok so I’ve just got back from the wheel alignment specialist who were very knowledgeable and knew about certain golf’s having issues whereby if you go by the recommended factory setting for rear camber it will cause the sawtooth issue on your tyres...apparently VW wont say which cars are affected and it’s not across the entire range.

To that extent the rear camber was aligned as close to the -1 15’ setting as possible (I’ll try and add the Hunter readout) which will reduce/stop the tyres developing the sawtooth pattern going forward however....because my tyres already have this sawtooth pattern it will not totally eliminate the problem.

He also believed the previous owner had swapped fronts to backs due to the wear on the tyres which didn’t help either...

What I can say is the droning noise at 70 is noticeable but not as bad.

I know I need a new set of tyres to cure the issue however I go on the motorway one or twice a month so it’s not a big issue at the moment.

The garage was called A line based in Dudley and I’d highly recommend them with the full toe and camber alignment at £65.

Cheers

Hi did you fit new tires and did it solve the droning problem finally.

How much over the speed limit are we talking?. You'd have thought that the employees knew the owner could monitor that stuff. Glad it's hopefully sorted!

Not sure Lordie, just triggered a speed limit I set on "We Connect" stating exceeded 70mph on roads that have a maximum of 60mph. Very dissapointed bit glad to have the car back.

I hope that's all sorted for you now, the new windscreen was a bonus! I stopped at my dealer a few days ago and there was a MK8 there that looked like it was having something done in the sunroof/windscreen area - the sunroof was open and covered up.

Thanks Watts, I hope so too as I love the car
