we dont cover 17 or 18 year olds and have not for many years so unfortunately im not really sure what the going rate is at the moment, perhaps have a look at the insurance comparison thread (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=29360.0) too see if anyones details are similar to your own.

judging by what it costs 19/20 yrs olds etc to insure mk1 cabs though (hey han ) i should imagine at 17 its gonna be very expensive even for non gti models.

As Han correctly pointed out there are too many other factor involved to even give a guideline price anyway, as well as age and car things like postcode, occupation, annual mileage etc can make huge diffences, so best bet is just wack your details into a few websites like confused.com & moneysupermarket to get an idea

Best of luck

haha! yeah! if you want a dub to keep you going while you get a cab at a later (affordable date) like i did! then its worth looking at something like a 1.6 driver mk2, or a small engine mk1, or possibly a mk3 depending on budget!

in my case i had a first car for a year, (non vag) then i got my mk2 driver 1.6, which i loved and was cheap to insure!! now with 3yrs no claims i can insure a cab for £1000 fully comp, with 3 points (SP30 -in a driver!!), 3 non fault accidents and all mods declared including future mods - lowered, stainless, audio system, interior retrim and immobiliser!

Hope you get sorted either way! There are plenty of options!

Just reiterating what martin said, money supermarket is a fantastic site and have used it many times with great results. Takes about 5-10 minutes to fill out and will give you a good idea of price.

17-18-19-20 year olds just get arse rapped when it comes to insurance

Also regardless of what car you drive at 17 your going to be paying loads!

Yep, thats what I do. I'm 20 and pay £1000 on a 2.0 GTi MK4. If thats any help. Remember if you are going to do that your old man needs to be owner of the car and not you, just a heads up.

Let me know how you get on as I'm intrigued.

just make sure you go with someone that lets named drivers build a ncb.. or you'll be paying silly money for insurance until you're 30.

I know direct line do. To be honest you probably wont find one that will insure you. Most of the big names that offer this named driver ncb thing will turn you down and you have to get insured with a smaller named insurer that does not offer it.

I am currently not getting any ncb but there was no way I was going to pay £3000 for 1 years insurance being the main driver as is just a complete joke.
