Title: Water mark help!
Post by: Horney on 07 August 2011, 18:26
Washed the MX5 today and ended up with water marks in the paint on the bonnet. The pic below is not my car but it's exactly the same.

It seems to be in the paint as no amount of SRP will even make a difference, tried three goes on one section with no joy.

Any ideas before I get fed up and get the bonnet re-painted? So so gutted as the car looks great and then the bonnet looks sh!te.

Hi Nick long time no see;)

pop round and see guy and get him to run the machine over it with some finishing polish on a medium cut pad which should sort it then get it sealed up with some good durable sealant or a hybrid wax, couple of layers should be enough;)

if only this was the case!!

had to remove about 20um and resort to using G3 to get the job done... several hits with that and heavy cut pad, followed by removing the holograms and swirls with a polishing pad and finishing polish did the job... took ages but I got there in the end

two coats of jetseal 109 and a final coat of swissvax and it looks like new

Well it's back and worse than before.

Onto plan B. Going to try a DA and cutting paste to get them out again and then taking it u to a mates spray booth on monday to blow it over with clear coat to hopefully seal it properly from happening again.

If that fails then I'll get my mate to blow over the whole car in a fresh coat of Neo Green.

Yeah just a bit, I'm well gutted. Got it on one wing top as well.

I think the plan now is to take the bonnet off the car first thing monday and get some fine wet and dry on it and take it as far back as I dare. Hopefully that will get them out. Then into the booth and couple of cans of laquer to seal it.

Also going to get a quote off Marcus to blow the whole car over in fresh pant as I think I might get it done anyway in the spring as it is stone ship city at the moment. I reckon if I strip and prep it myself over a day he can paint it for about £400. Should be able to do the whole thing ina 4 day weekend from start to finish.

this isn't a recurrance of the same spots that we had the other day was it? or is this new spots after a rainfall?

New spots after not washing it for a week, spotted them this morning before I cleaned it. They're in different places and much bigger. Really weird!

Since ive applyed dodojuice lime prime via a machine buffer and then a wax, I dont get as much water marks.
Just used a wash wax shampoo and then megs quick detailer. No marks!

Never used a paint cleanser in the past (lime prime). I did use poorboys polishes and then wax but after a wash I got very bad water marks.

Acid Rain on cheap lacquer i reckon Nick, has the car had any paint? are all panels marking up uniformly?
Seen something like this type of contamination before, and turned out to be the brake dust off trains, settling on the car during the day, while parked at a train station car park, day in day out, lacquer would eventually break down, especially at high humidity times if the year...
I have also seen this type of problem, reappear after painting!!

the car didn't have lacquer on it

it only appeared on the bonnet when i saw it

the train car park car would have had a lot of iron filings fallout on it too... time for a bit of stinky iron x

Thom, MX5 is single stage so no lacquer.

I cut pack the bonnet with wet and dry last weekend and then sprayed it with 3 coats of halfords rattle can lacquer. It looks sh!t but should be OK once I've cut back the runs and polished it up.

Problem is I didn't manage to sand out all the marks as they were hard to see once I'd sanded the shine off and they're now sealed under hte lacquer. Doh!

Looking likely the car will be getting a fresh coat of paint in the new year.

Sorry, I thought the car was Metallic green...
It'll more than likely be one of the pigments that is breaking down, in the similar in the way that Tornado red breaks down.

From recollection, the Mazda should still be a basecoat solid colour!

I've had cars that fade before but not ones that fade in perfect water droplet shapes and to such a depth in the paint. Very odd. TO remove them I had to do 10+ passes with 1600Grit wet and dry!

A good sealant would of prevented this from coming back imo

Guy did seal it with Jetseal and then waxed it. 3 washes later (Used Bilt hamber shampoo) and it came back.

i'm flummoxed myself  :undecided:

i find Fk1000p,G-tech C1 perform better personally, i think in this case jetseal isnt strong enough for the situation.

I would say that pigments are breaking down to the point of no return! the more it now gets polished, the shorter the period of time before the spots return, damage would have been done by raindrops magnifying UV deep into the pigments causing one of them to break down, Its possible Nick, that what you're seeing, maybe damage that was "polished out" before you bought the car, making an unwanted return! a quality sealer, and a good waxing, may put it to bed, but only for a short while... eventually, I would expect the panel to turn White
