2ltr GTI ignition problem?
« on: 04 June 2003, 03:44 »
Has anyone seen this before please?

Mk3, 2ltr, 8valve, P reg (96)

Vehicle fails at random intervals, no spark from coil. Local VW dealer and local independent unable to diagnose despite all the fancy gear.

When it fails, coil lead held to block, spark may or may not return when engine turned over. Eventually spark does return, until the next time.

Plugs, leads, cap and coil all replaced, problem persists.
Someone must have seen/experienced this before and any input would be much appreiated.
Thank you,  petel@clara.co.uk

Hi Pete,
I have heard of a similar problem on Mk3's.
Basically the contacts in the ignition switch fail intermitantly, causing the symptoms you describe, I'm not sure how much a new switch costs (around ?10).
Let me know how you get on.

Sounds similar to problem on mine. That turned out to be the Hall Sender Relay. Can find the part number and more detail if you like? (about ?13).

Dealer found this problem so would have thought they should have picked it up if same fault.

Have seen a few crankshaft sensors fail and show this fault. It is below the oil filter housing, near the g/box mounting. Expensive, about ?180, :o. Steve

Pete,

Got exactly same issue with my Mk3 2l 8v. Would turnover but not catch, or would work as normal depends what mood it was in. Finally it stopped altogether, got the Alarm people out as I thought the non-std immobilised had stuffed itself, they removed it, still won't start! They reckoned it was the Ignition switch (under the barrel (?).

Took it to an indy garage (can't afford VW) the KDS gadget wouldn't work because of my non-std stereo (nice catch), they took out stereo and found ECU was shot through (oh arse).

Sent ECU to a lovely garage in Plymouth, they fixed it yesterday for ?110 and got garage to replace ignition chip and earth strap as this probably caused the blowout.

Short story - check the ignition chip, you could get garage to check ECU output as well just to be on safe side.
Ta Muchly,

Stuby.
