Mk2 Gti 16v - Is it a track car?
« on: 27 June 2003, 21:45 »
Hi VW people, im a Renault man myself but have been offered a Mk2 Gti 180016v rather cheaply and was gonna strip it our and convert it into a track car.

I will probably need new suspension, shocks and springs all round and a few other bits need cleaning up and sorting but its so cheap i cant really say no.

What are these things like on the track? Are they fun?

And what tuning potential has the engine got? Is it expensive to get more power (like my '95 16vclio!) or is it reasonable gains for your bucks?

Also what are the bits they usually go first?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Mk2 16 valve...!

An excellent trackday car!!!...you will want to lower it slightly, and perhaps upgrade the brakes(depending on how late you like to brake!)

They handle absolutley beautifully...very presise...

The 16v works much better near the top of the revs,...so you really do need to thrash it to keep it moving quick...(but when you do boy do they go!)...8 valve has a bit more torque lower down the revs...

Performance wise...you can expect around 7.5 secs..0-60 and 130-140 top end (depending on the wind ;)

They are very very robust cars and as you have found out you can pick up older mk2s for nothing...so parts are very cheap!...clutch/gearbox...are prob worth having a look at before you rag the pants off it on the track...!

ENJOY!!!!! )I know you will!

PS if you live in the SE...I have another mk2 golf currently for sale for 250? ono...I just need it off my drive as I donthave space...!

Thanks for your reply

Is yours a Mk2 Gti 16v as well then? What sort of condition is it on realisticly?

The one im interested in is F reg, has no MoT (not a prob though) needs probably 500quid for its MOT and i can get it for 200. Its got big bumpers, lowered, all interior still in tact, engine seems to run ok,

But the best thing on these cars is there's so much room to work on the engine unlike my cramped clio!

cheers

My knowledge on the Mk2 16V is limited (mainly 8V Mk2 and Mk1) which is why I didn't respond.......however, there are some very knowledgeable enthusiasts here who I'm sure will be able to help. In my experience here I have noticed that the forum tends to go very quiet over the weekend so you may find that come this week you'll get far more help.

Good luck and look forward to seeing you out there on the track  ;D

I am now a proud owner of a Mk2 16v Gti.

I would really appreciate if anyone could name some good sources for 2nd hand parts and performance parts for the golf.

Thanks very much.

i made the mistake of blowing my old engine up due to oil starvation....doh
