Rear Top Mount
« on: 25 June 2011, 13:18 »
I have an AGU GTi and I have to replace my rear top mounts as the near side one is knocking quite badly.  I've noticed from the diagram that the assembly at the top has a cap and stop buffer.  Will these be damaged from the knocking caused by the worn top mount.

I will be getting my mechanic to do the work and although not a specialist he is very comptetent.  With this in mind, I just wanted to confirm if I have the right method to do the job.

1. Jack up car using trolley jack.
2. Remove wheel and undo bolt at base of strut and then 2 bolts on the top mount.
3. Remove strut and undo bolt at top of strut to release top mount.
4. Replace top mount with new one.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Well, I replaced both rear top mounts and the knocking noise still remains at the nearside rear.  I can't think what else it could be other than the shock itself, but when taken out it looked perfectly fine.  Also the car passes the bounce test fine.

Maybe it is the rear axle bushes after all, but I'm sure the handling would have been poor at the rear if this was the case.  I think to be sure I will have these replaced, especially as my mechanic said they looked a little worn.  I thought you couldn't visually determine if they were were worn.

Any advice would be welcome.

Exhaust hitting rear beam? Broken exhaust bracket? (Very common weld breaks in the middle)

As above, make sure the exhaust is not hitting the beam.

Thanks for the replies.

I've had a quick tug at the exhaust and it looks secure from the centre section to the back.  I will get it looked at on Monday on ramp at friends garage.

If my rear axle bushes are indeed worn, would it not affect the cars handling.
