Always liked this Mk1 ! Be interesting to see what he does to it.

Only 1 thing that always bugged me was the Airfilter setup. All that work to make a clean bay and then the Air filter stuck on the end of a strap to the strut top just looked lazy.

It's not being changed really, just stripped down to be freshened up. New genuine drivers side wing (current was an ill fitting pattern copy) new genuine door skin, sills checked for rot (and found to be solid) new genuine scuttle panel, a few bits cut out and tidied up in the engine bay, rear panel corners cut out due to rot and replaced. Bonnet paint removed with a chisel (yes it was that flakey

Anyways how she looks now...

Title: Re: Anyone know this mk1?
Post by: higher1 on 30 December 2012, 21:08
Ok so a bit of an update

The car had a few places of rust and a couple of things i wasn't happy with so ive decided to strip it and respray it the only catch is the 1st show is now 17 weeks away!

Heres the process to date

The god aweful aero style fuel cap had to go 1 it didn't fit well and 2 its just not in keeping with the retro feel pics of the bad fitting cap and fuel pipe

so out it was all stripped new filler neck has been bought

Then i attacked the lower rear panel as the corners were suffering from the good old rust

new corner section welded in

then the cut out for the exhaust was filled in as it has a down swept tail pipe

stripped the sill back to bare metal and all is good

next up is the drivers side front wing, its a aftermarket part non genuine and i hate the fit the profile is all wrong so ive bought a new genuine vw wing

also the non genuine wing is missing the little reinforcing tabs -

the genuine wing -

Then the strip down started

in the process of this i found some rust in the drivers door so ive bought a new genuine door skin

engine out was the next step so i can work on the bulkhead

so to update ive cut out a little bit of rust in the tailgate and formed a panel to weld in place keeping it with all the original seams etc

the black part is the new panel
(http://i49.tinypic.com/35ml79w.jpg)

and it welded and ground back
(http://i50.tinypic.com/30u7iax.jpg)

etch primed
(http://i46.tinypic.com/29ztuv8.jpg)

started to take the nsr quater panel back to bare metal as i know they suffer from rust around the rear windows
(http://i47.tinypic.com/2q04mma.jpg)

took the scuttle panel back to bare metal as its showed signs of rust im going to replace it at a later date
(http://i46.tinypic.com/21aalfq.jpg)

nsr quarter back to bare metal
(http://i50.tinypic.com/11lhp93.jpg)

started on the ns door and along the drip rail
(http://i45.tinypic.com/65zv69.jpg)

test fit of the genuine wing
(http://i49.tinypic.com/4j14pw.jpg)

Title: Re: Anyone know this mk1?
Post by: higher1 on 30 December 2012, 21:17
cut the scuttle panel out
(http://i50.tinypic.com/2d0m3pd.jpg)

removing the last bits along the windscreen edge
(http://i45.tinypic.com/adp0z6.jpg)

old and new
(http://i49.tinypic.com/153rwp0.jpg)

popped the bonnet on to measure
(http://i45.tinypic.com/2uiwwg8.jpg)

spotting the new one in place
(http://i49.tinypic.com/24mxgnm.jpg)

all welded in place
(http://i45.tinypic.com/ab48n.jpg)

then work stopped for a weekend as i went with my dad to collect his new project a 1969 mk2 lotus cortina it needs a full resto but its a good base
(http://i48.tinypic.com/5vrkht.jpg)

back on the golf i cut a bit of corrosion out of the bulk head and made a plate to weld in
(http://i47.tinypic.com/2rcyi35.jpg)

welded a repair section into the corner of the scuttle
(http://i48.tinypic.com/yfe36.jpg)

Title: Re: Anyone know this mk1?
Post by: higher1 on 30 December 2012, 21:20
built a wheel up to test fit i cant run a very wide wheel on the front as it has huge 4 pot calipers and need a spacer to clear them
(http://i50.tinypic.com/2yvp69s.jpg)

new drivers door skin arrived so i ground the old one off
(http://i50.tinypic.com/o7rgoj.jpg)

test fit of the new one
(http://i47.tinypic.com/6sayyg.jpg)

then spotted it in a couple of places before a trial fit on the car
(http://i49.tinypic.com/ruo4eh.jpg)

popped it on with the wing for gapping etc and finished spot welding the door skin on
(http://i49.tinypic.com/71pet0.jpg)

now the scuttle panel was for a LHD its all that was available so i welded the wiper holes up
(http://i46.tinypic.com/2aaeqmb.jpg)

also welded the aerial hole up on the wing
(http://i50.tinypic.com/157btdi.jpg)

Title: Re: Anyone know this mk1?
Post by: higher1 on 30 December 2012, 21:22
the new wing needed the arch lip cutting down to help reduce any tyre rub

before standard large return edge
(http://i48.tinypic.com/24e57w6.jpg)

after edge cut back
(http://i47.tinypic.com/xaqm0.jpg)

the bonnet is a complete mess the previous paint prep was bad, the paint just flakes off with a chisel
(http://i49.tinypic.com/2q3sldy.jpg)

as you can see the top was just a build up of paint and high build
(http://i49.tinypic.com/28iqmg0.jpg)

a close up to show you how thick it was it totally ruined the defining lnes of the bonnet etc
(http://i48.tinypic.com/15pqwzm.jpg)

out come the sander
(http://i48.tinypic.com/a32lj5.jpg)

im not running rear arch spats so i welded the holes up
(http://i46.tinypic.com/20zy90g.jpg)

still going on the bonnet lol
(http://i49.tinypic.com/28lf7ky.jpg)

started to take the ns door back to
(http://i45.tinypic.com/25qf2b8.jpg)

back to bare metal
(http://i47.tinypic.com/25fnali.jpg)

the bonnet was a nightmare so out came the paint stripper
(http://i45.tinypic.com/1znqrv6.jpg)

and it back to bare metal
(http://i45.tinypic.com/20fxmv8.jpg)
Title: Re: Anyone know this mk1?
Post by: higher1 on 30 December 2012, 21:25
stripped the ns wing back to bare metal
(http://i50.tinypic.com/al6rzo.jpg)

and the same with the tailgate
(http://i49.tinypic.com/o5t89s.jpg)

that brings us upto date, so at last it was time to etch prime all the bare metal although theres a long way to go its a turning point for me as at last things arent being stripped or taken off

i would like to say im not a bodyshop guy or a sprayer im a mechanic and i work on motor caravans, this is the 1st time ive ever really done body work even though ive modified cars for many years.

panels ready for etch primer i borrowed some panel stands from a neighbour
[im]http://i50.tinypic.com/j79dnq.jpg[/img]

made good use of the 2 poster lift and hung the rest from it
(http://i48.tinypic.com/2w72z9t.jpg)

and primed
(http://i49.tinypic.com/osfo0n.jpg)

been working in the bay today tidying things up etc i needed a little more clearence between the turbo and chassis rail just behind the engine mount

so ive dressed the chassis leg in a little for some extra clearance

so today i painted the whole car in high build primer im soooooo happy with it all it really is a turning point and i now know it will be ready for painting in january

just a few spots need very fine attention

Quick update i removed the chassis leg lip so i have more clearence with the drive shaft then welded it back up for strength

And found another gearbox with the code i wanted ENJ this has a higher ratio than the current gearbox and will allow a better cruising speed, i may even be able to put a little more power down in 1st,2nd and 3rd haha

gave it a quick clean i haven't decided on colour yet paint it silver or same colour as the body like the previous box?

Title: Re: Anyone know this mk1?
Post by: higher1 on 30 December 2012, 21:31
so ive removed the gearbox and checked the clutch it has hardly any wear but does have a little bit of movement in the centre drive so il replace it

carrying on with the colour coded parts theme the paint on the oil filter housing is looking shabby to so ive removed it ready to treat and paint

thought ild update this as loads has changed

changed the fk's for ah-exclucive modified ultra lows by H&R
