Title: Expansion tank / coolant colour
Post by: 2007GTI on 13 November 2017, 15:08
I've only had my car 6 weeks, I just went to top up the washer fluid and noticed the expansion tank, in all my other golfs you could clearly see the usual orange coolant colour through the tank, however mine looks muddy brown, not good!

thoughts?

That does look a bit manky, have you taken the cap off and looked inside? Any gunge visible under the oil filler cap or dip stick?

Thanks for your reply.  Underneath oil filler is clean, as is dip stick.

I looked in expansion tank, there is some small spots in the bottom, but it's pretty clear, but not orange!

Can't see the pictures (in work) but if the water looks mucky, it could be contaminated with oil (head gasket?).

Might be worth checking the oil filler etc. for mayo buildup too?

As above oil filler is fine

Note to self, don't speed read the thread

Might be worth getting the coolant changed out and see if it comes back?

VW G13 coolant is pink not orange AFAIK. It looks ok to me but if there is sediment in there also you might have a problem.

So after much back and forth with my local main dealer and the supplying dealer, I ended up taking it back to the supplying dealer, as the local main dealer were basically saying it is not covered under Das Welt and "who was going to pay for it".  Supplying dealer is 100 mile round trip, and they said they would speak to my local main dealer, and confirm it would be covered by them, but the more I talked to them, the more it sounded like a potential for a f*ck up.  So I did a deal that if I bring it back to them, they would return the car to me with full tank of fuel, as they wanted the car for a few days.

So they had the car back and flushed the coolant system, replaced coolant bottle with a brand new one and refilled with new coolant.  They said they couldn't find a fault. Someone suggested it might of been the previous owner topping up with blue coolant and not pink, and them mixing together, who knows?  Still odd whatever it was, wasn't spotted on the bulls!t Das Welt check. I am going to keep an eye on it and will report back if it reappears.

So the coolant hasn't changed colour since having the work done (see above), but it has lost a bit, from looking at other threads, I understand this is common in Mk7s for them to use coolant.

I was looking at buying some G13 to top it up and what is now in my car looks more pink, and I understand it should be G13 which is purple coloured.

What do you guys think?

I just bought a litre of the pink stuff from ebay and top it up direct from the bottle.

Thanks, but my question is, isn’t it meant to be G13 in the Mk7 and G13 is apparently purple not pink?

See here, scroll half way down to the chart

Just go to VW dealer, ask for a bottle of G13 coolant. Hand him the money, top up coolant bottle when required. You can argue then with yourself whether you think it’s purple or pink !

The stuff I buy is the same colour as the stuff already in the car from the factory - thats good enough for me :-)

Well if you look at my first post, I’ve already been thru the issue of murky coolant, that previous owner probably caused, so trying to avoid it again. I will double check with dealer.

Dilute to required ratio with de-ionised water (from your condensers tumble dryer, or Halfords sell it in 5ltr bottles as battery top up water)

Great tip about the tumble dryer water Rebecca.

Alternatively, if you run a water filter for detailing, you can use water run through that as it’s DI water.

Detailing, ha ha, no point living in London!

Amazingly, cars outside of London get dirty.

Back on topic, car went in to dealer as the coolant was completely wrong colour, so dealer changed the bottle, flushed and refilled.

I have assembled photos of the new coolant bottle as fitted in December, and have noticed a dramatic loss in coolant over 858 miles.

What does everyone think? This can't be normal?  Maybe water pump on way out?

I’d be inclined to top it up and then monitor it again and if a further drop then get them to investigate the water pump/thermostat housing both of which are noted problems resulting in coolant loss.

You are probably aware of the issue of an airlock in the system in cars leaving the factory, which, several thousand miles later, results in the air leaching out and appearing as a drop in coolant level.  But yours is beyond that in mileage, but I wonder if changing the bottle and flushing the system might have produced similar effect?

Thanks Booth.

I sent the image to an old mate who is an ex main dealer technician, who says that clearly demonstrates a steady loss, and it is unlikely not settling down or an air lock, but perhaps something more serious and says I should have it booked it.

Yes it will have done as they have changed the coolant completely and may have introduced a  new air lock. Top it up and monitor it again.

Yeah, that was my thinking.  If I was the OP, I’d be topping it up and monitoring it daily/weekly for a while.

I wouldn't really call this dramatic if cooling system was just bled / refilled. Top up and monitor, should not drop again much (taking heat expansion into account).

Well I finally spoke to dealer and they asked me to top up and monitor, so I’ll give 2 weeks and see what happens.

So, I had to wait 3 weeks, because I wanted a courtesy car, but supplying dealer had my car back and found the leak, it was a seal on the thermostat housing, they replaced the seal and fingers crossed that is the end if it.

UPDATE on a update.  Despite the dealer saying it was fixed with new seals on water pump and thermostat housing, the car has lost another load of coolant over the last 440 miles since I collected it.

It's going to go back in, I'm really annoyed they didn't fix it!

I saw on another thread about cracked thermostat housing, is that common?
