Just watched episode 2 from Sunday night, got to the end and thought - what a waste of an hour. They spent 10 mins talking about cars and the rest was sh!te. Why on every episode do they think we want to watch them have some pointless and over the top race.
Like the race with the Taxi's, it was so fake and set-up. If they are gonna race at least race....not cars going through walls and cars through Limo's.
As for the Free runners again Trial bike....WTF...its a car show, it had Zero relevance. I think they have just run out of ideas and are just making up silly sh!t to do.
Dont get me wrong, I have loved the the entertaining things they have done over the 11 series, but does anyone else think its getting a bit stupid now....at least spend 20-30 on cars stuff and maybe even review a car we might buy.
Seems Fifth Gear and some internet shows like Drive and Motor trend do a much better job....
Anyone else feel the same?
-
Couldn't agree more, getting bored of it now!
-
Who on earth told you it was a car show?
For me, the best bit about last nights show was seeing Dougie Lampkin, sod the 'free/set-up' runners!

Its the way it was so fake, the free runners jumped through "glass", there was perfect camera shot in every hall way....bet it took them 5-7 hours to shoot a 10 min race....
Just get bored of it...
-
thought the last few series have been very meh...
still watch it if its on while im in, but wownt be going on iplayer to catch up the epesodes I miss while on holiday
-
The mono and Ferrari bits were about cars. The mono looked brilliant but a bigger engine would make it more awesome
-
I did enjoy the Ferrari M12 at the end but the rest was pretty dull.
-
Its primarily an entertainment show and, like all entertainment shows, is highly scripted to to save time and money. I still enjoy it but some of it bores me. Some of the editing and visuals during the supercar bits are pretty good, better than any other car/entertainment show in that respect.
-
I agree, the last few series have been going down hill. I thought this series they'd had a budget cut or something because it's just boring and silly. Like the race last week in the "rented" car and the constant crashes.
I am an avid fan of Top Gear though, so I will still watch but I'm losing interest in this series slowly... :embarrassed:
-
It wins light entertaiment awards! What else do you expect from it?
It has a car theme, they smash stuff up, cheat in races, just like the Wacky Racers.
They do have some nice cars on there and the News is interesting.
I love it!

Agreed, just a bit of easy watching on a Sunday eve
If you want to see reviews of cars there are multiple you tube sites etc to do this!

The problem with plain car reviews, is they are all very samey. Take a look at the Auto Express reviews, they tell you what you need to know, but they follow a formula and stick to the straight simple review. Not very entertaining, this would have people turning off in droves. Take a look at their Mk7 Golf GTI review (http://www.carbuyer.co.uk/reviews/volkswagen/golf/gti-hatchback/video?_mout=1&utm_campaign=autoexpressvideo_newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter#video)
Top Gear is classed as a factual/entertainment programme. It's based on factual stuff, but it leans heavily towards entertainment.
But as has where else will you find a review of a £250,000 supercar? Or a race between the latest Aston Martin coupe and a train?
If you're in the market for a family car, you can find reviews in lots of places and will be able to take a couple for test drives, but you're hardly likely to walk into a Ferrari dealer and borrow one for half an hour.
TG gives you the chance to see something you're unlikely to experience, just like David Attenborough nature docs allow you to see animals from parts of the world you'll never see.
That said, there are some pointless bits in the programme. The taxi "race" was pointless and looked a bit staged. The "Tribute to TV Centre" was also a bit of a waste of time. Considering Top Gear has never been filmed there, the only link is that they will have had an office there. It was more like, "here's an empty building, lets see if we can ride a motorcross bike around in it".
I do still enjoy it, but sometimes you do have to remember it's a car-based entertainment programme, not all of it is about cars and not all of it is that serious.
I do want to know what road that was that Jeremy tested the Ferrari on in Hertfordshire though. That looks like a fun drive.
Edit: Apparently that was in Scotland and they're not happy that Clarkson said it was Hertfordshire (http://www.thecourier.co.uk/news/local/perth-kinross/outrage-in-pitlochry-viewers-puzzled-by-top-gear-star-jeremy-clarkson-s-hertfordshire-claim-1.110518)

As soon as i saw that road i knew exactly where it was as its not far from me. It may look nice but its full of pot holes lol. The thing is the creators of TG are not obligated to be factual. All the races are staged at edited to look more appealing.

I live 5 miles from Letchworth and knew it wasn't there
-
The programme is ridiculous. I haven't watched it in years. I feel it is all pointless and stupid. 3 over paid sell outs, maybe 2, prancing around in super cars and trying to be funny.
James May is far more than that show I feel, but RH and that thingy JC need to call their time on TG.

Without JC their is no top gear or he would have been sacked a long time ago.

lol....he falls outside the norm of a maintream presenter. Old, fat, bad teeth and non existent fashion. But his personality makes him popular. A rarety almost.
-
Sacked? Wasn't it his 'co-idea' and he cant be sacked? presuming im not just making stuff up
Yep, he and Andy Willman own the concept and rights to Top Gear and have sold the format all around the world, making a shedload of cash in the process.
The only problem I have with TG is the obviously scripted stuff. It wasn't sooooo obvious in the past when things broke or fell off. Now, they engineer the cars to do that, or set things up in such a way that its the only conclusion.
Its getting more like Last Of The Summer Wine every year.

Near on all entertainment programmes are scipted. It saves time and money. Why go off location with a film crew and film randomly with the chance nothing interesting will happen when you can write a script, organise and film it and get home for your tea. TG has followed this concept since its relaunch. It does suck but people buy into it. Even me.
-
it's still the biggest bbc exports that makes bbc worldwide shed loads of money.... whilst that happens it won't be cancelled, the only time it may go is if JC leaves

Look on the bright side, This Sundays episode (14/07/13) is a trio of supercars across Europe, they have not done that before
-
top gear is ace

I watched it the other day on Dave. Ferrari, Aston and GT40 off to the Millau suspension bridge.

yawn........

Rather watch paint dry, in fact that's what i'm doing.
Amazing how quickly it dries in this weather, done two coats of gloss today....
-

That to be fair is one of the better episodes
-
Yeah wasnt too bad last night, quite enjoyed it for once...
-
even though they've done it before, I thought the commentary and the visuals of a bankrupt spain were interesting. Especially the disused brand spanking new airport. I wonder how easily it would be to land there incognito and at night?

I hope they are saving the good episodes for last...... :undecided:
-
I found it very funny tonight.
Good interview.
good cars.
-
As above was good tonight... i like it
-
As per two previous comments i enjoyed tonights i thought the hovervan was class almost as good as the caravaning episode
-
Have to disagree. It is getting worse. I like the occasional races they have and the special episodes to different countries but when they are not doing those I wish they would just give us car reviews rather than this nonsense.
One car review tonight if in right, the SLS?
-
The hovercraft was nowhere near as good as the caravanning episode.
-
The hovercraft was nowhere near as good as the caravanning episode.
I actually found it quite fun, when they totally soaked them people eating.....

Some of it was. I'm not so sure that part was though
-
Complete crap, 10mins on the Merc SLS's and that was it for cars.
-
I'm going to check out the latest episode this evening, we'll see. Wasn't too impressed by the last 2 ones..
-
Complete crap, 10mins on the Merc SLS's and that was it for cars.
I was the one who started this topic because episode 2 was so sh1te.....
But the last two have been quite good. I really enjoyed this Sundays, yes parts of it were set up, but still it made me laugh quite a lot...
-
It just feels like they are trying too hard now, it all used to be so effortless.
Watch the episode where they built the generator powered electric car or the caravanning episode.. i almost hurt myself laughing at them and still do if i see them again.
-
Yes it is terrible. Shame as old ones were really good.
-
I have to say, if I'm putting it into perspective to the previous seasons it all seems kind of 'fake'. Of course, most of the scenes are fake and not as spontaneous as they would like to appear. You'd actually have to admit they are all great actors. However, everybody is still looking at it (looking at the comments), and I have to say that's worth something as well. Because I, for one, still find it very amusing to watch. Sometimes it's so ridiculous that even I start complaining about it, but it can be fun as well.
-
I think they are all a bunch of dicks tbh.
-
Sundays one was pretty good....i love the camera work and editing during the supercar tests, wish they spent more time doing that. The rest is scripted to death, but done reasonably well. Some can be quite boring though. Still watch it.
-
It's just a bit hit and miss I guess
-

same here those two episodes are class also the snowbine harvester one is class too
-
I thort tonight's episode was quite good, some very nice cars to start then some feckin about distroying caravans
-
Thats more like it!!!!.... amazing cars and properly funny caravanning feature, even the SIARPC was interesting.
-
Most enjoyable episode
-
Haven't laughed that hard at Topgear in yonks
-
Tonight's ones was superb, was p!ssing my pants!
-
I love topgear, it may have gone a bit off topic over the years, its not really a car show anymore, but its still my favorite program on the tv
I give the channel "Dave" and absolute smashing as it plays so much top gear
-
It was looking pretty bad that episode. I think Top Gear could be past it's day
-
I think it's still pretty funny, it isn't that surprising anymore (I think they've used up most their tricks), but I still think it's entertaining!
-
I enjoyed the latest episode, the caravan bit was funny without being totally over-the-top scripted and the lambo feature was great.
-

Yep, totally agree
-
Litterly just finished catching up on the last two episodes and Id be lying if I said I didn't throughly enjoy my viewing, the latest lambo & caravan one was particularly good.
-
Last episode was them back at their best. Restrained humour (bus thing was very enjoyable and not too over the top) the f type and sport reviews were interesting and informative, mark webber was good and the end story was magnificent. Top gear should be like this every week. Forget your hover vans. Bring on the factual programming!
-
One question I do have from tonight's episode. Why doesn't France watch top gear?
-

Because they are tw@ts.... and yes, very good again tonight.
-
Tonights episode was the best I have seen for a long time, really enjoyed it.
-
Very enjoyable tonights episode liking the new jag and finally mark webber beats seb vettel :afro: and british manufacturing at its best!,the F1 cars driving through milton keynes was class
-
Yep, I should really change the title of this topic....as the last 3 have been really enjoyable.
Got to admit, episode 2&3 were rubbish though
-
The last feature was cool, but pointless.... Seeing as all those companies are owned by foreign countries!
-
The last feature was cool, but pointless.... Seeing as all those companies are owned by foreign countries!
The point was not who owned them, but who makes them. Made by people in Britain.
Anybody could own a company, all that takes is money or financial backing; but designing and making stuff is where the skill is.
I wonder how that episode will go down in Germany...
Anyone watch the programme that came after TG on BBC2?
Talking about what went wrong with the British motor industry and what the Germans did right?
Das Auto: The Germans, Their Cars and Us (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03866cj/Das_Auto_The_Germans_Their_Cars_and_Us/)
Quite interesting and some great vintage car ads too.

I watched that, it was very interesting but i couldn't help thinking that it was being very generous about the quality of German cars which are not always as good as they made them out to be.
-
I enjoyed Sunday's episode as well
The documentary after was really interesting.
-
Can anyone tell which roads does jeremy drives ferrari in first episode calling it hertfordshire? and the james driving bus through mountains in episode six.
I would love to go for a drive on those roads.
Thanks
-
Somewhere in Scotland
-
Pretty sure the 'mountains' where James drove the bus was cheddar gorge in somerset, its not a bad bit of road but you'd have to go there in winter as its full of shed draggers in summer.
-

yes it was, but I think I recall he said he was driving there anyway, or alluded to it
-
thought sundays was a bit crap tbh
as much as i love the jag ftype, old news now...
the buss thing was pointless, amusing at times but pointless.
mark in the reasonably priced car i enjoyed, which i normally turn over for the star in reasonably priced car part cause its always boring.
and the end bit with all the english cars was a bit boring too... just a load of short clips of people driving around london then parked on a streed
yawn...
-
Agreed, just when I thought things had really picked up over the past few episodes this one slumped once again.
-
Missing it already!
-
New series next sunday!
They're going to compare old hot hatches to the new equivalents, GTI?

I thought it was going to be MK7 GTI ve M135i - bit of unfair battle. The GTI is going to get creamed, Fifth gears review as bad enough....Imagine was they are going to say about it...
-
They did this on Autoexpress. Old performance cars versus the new ones.
What's wrong with this picture?

"Jeremy grabs the keys to a Volkswagen Golf GTI, Richard takes the wheel of a Vauxhall Nova SRi and James May opts for the Ford Fiesta XR2i,"
SRI? Was there a Nova SRI? I can only remember the 1.3 and 1.4 SR and the 1.6 GTE. There was an SXI later on, but that was a 1.2 with single point injection, so far from a hot hatch.
-
There certainly was as i owned one as my second car many moons ago.
-
Not my one but identical including the wheels.

That looks really nice. What engine did that have? 1.4 with single point injection?

great wee cars until someone turned the hazard light switch upside down an stole it in less than 10 seconds
-
1.4 multi point injection, so basically the next thing down from a 1.6 GSI. I had a 1.3SR before this with twin 40's, Kent cam, Piper exhaust system, 4 branch manifold and some other bits and pieces - was pretty friggin lairy for a first car.
-
A lad I knew had a Nova Sport. Similar spec to your SR if I remember correctly, but with base spec trim level. That thing was wild too.
-
I am afraid that the show has fallen into the same trap that so many other shows before have also fallen for. They have lost the genuine feel of doing it for the joy of doing it, and tried to offer what they think people want. Many shows fall for this trap and ultimately end up staging junk that has lost the feel and excitement of the original show. I will admit that I at one time enjoyed the repo shows, as well. Eventually it became obvious that they were scripting most of the show, and almost none of it was real or genuine. I think that Top Gear has done the same thing and begun to try and make the show something it simply is not.
-
Here the producer of Top Gear responds to the question of weather Top Gear is going to grow up.
Radiotimes - Andy Willman Interview (http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2014-02-02/top-gear-an-hour-a-week-where-three-badly-dressed-middle-aged-men-bicker-fall-over-and-catch-fire)
"I scoured the wall thoroughly but, bottom line, almost everything we’d filmed was, once again, aimed at people with a mental age of nine.
I gave that last point some thought and quickly realised that it was too important to mess around with. If you’re actually nine, you need something to watch that isn’t a computer screen, and if you’re 29, 39 or 59, part of your brain will most likely still have a mental age of nine, and that part struggles to get nourishment. Modern life for adults is, after all, bloody hard. The workplace is not freer, but more regimented by management systems and nonsense enforced by going on “courses”. Email hasn’t decreased the workload but in fact piled it on. The demand to be accountable and produce results hangs heavy over every worker, and by the weekend they need a release valve. That’s where we come in – an hour a week where three badly dressed middle-aged men bicker, fall over and catch fire. An hour a week where nothing is achieved, but the path to nine-year-old escapism is briefly lit up. This is an important service we provide, and therefore essential that being nine should remain a massive remit of our films. "
-
OMG I am livid I have just witnessed them blowing up a perfectly good mk2 16v gti!!!! The other 2 are sh!te but still classic hot hatches and its sad that they have absolutely no respect for them. Yes its mildly amusing but I hate to see them do this to cars I would give my right arm for!!
-
it was an 8v
-
oh my bad lol. thought i saw 16v badge.
-
It is getting worse...
-
Now..being a mk2 16v owner I thought this would be a film about how it's better than modern GTI's. Instead it was pointless dicking about. Nothing to do with the cars, just the "cool 80's".
Could have just cut and paste any 80's /90's car in there and it would have been the same film.
What a wasted hour.
-
I like top gear but that was rubbish
-
Yawn
There's an hour I won't get back
-
Complete and utter crap tonight, lets hope it gets better.
-
Did no one else notice how the MK2 suddenly turned into a MK3 when it was "blown up"?
-
Just watched episode 2 from Sunday night, got to the end and thought - what a waste of an hour.
Only reason I see Top Gear is if I am on the wrong channel. it is sh!te. I switch to Discovery and watch Fifth Gear. Much better and actually about cars, not about some crappy trip in a crappy car around the world.
-
The retro hot hatch theme could have been so good...what a shame
-
That really was a particularly poor episode.
-
Now..being a mk2 16v owner I thought this would be a film about how it's better than modern GTI's. Instead it was pointless dicking about. Nothing to do with the cars, just the "cool 80's".

My money is on you tuning in next week all the same.
-
Series 21 - surely by now people should realise it is an entertainment show and what to expect. If you don't like it then don't watch it, plenty of decent car programmes on oher channels and the web.
-
Same thing every season.
Everybody watches it, everybody moans but yet everybody watches it next week  :lipsrsealed:
Try watching Ozzie tv, you'd love to watch top gear its better than the sh!te they put on over here!
-
+1 i came to terms with it no longer being a car program years ago.
its an entertainment program that has a few cars in it now....
occasional good segments on cars, but most of the time its just them having a laugh. if you watch it for the entertainment value its ok...

5th Gear with Tiff is where its at! As much as I like Top Gear and as people have pointed out...an absolute waste of an hour!
My bothers mate used to help produce this then left, I was offered tickets if I wanted to go...but I will pass thanks

I enjoyed every minute of last nights Top Gear!
It is a thoroughly entertaining programme.
I hope they blew up a dozen Mk2's!

Although it was a MKIII he was sat in afterwards lol.
Dreadful episode, hope next weeks is better.
-
They probably ran out of Mk2's to blow up!
-
Unfortunately you've just got to accept it for what it is which is now an entertainment programme rather than proper car reviews. The fact is even when they do review cars the cars they review are more often than not way out of the budget of the ordinary man on the street.
In saying that i'm looking forward to the P1 review next week.
Have to say im quite enjoying 'I want that car' just now on ITV4

Apart from the P1 (which is awesome) the rest of the show was mince. The 10mins spent on army vehicles was totally irrelevant and the star in a RPC is just so boring - i turn over for 10 mins when this part is on.
In terms of the Alfa 4C i can't actually recall them drawing any sort of conclusion as to whether is was good, rubbish, value for money etc. Most of it was about that stupid quad bike which you almost could guess straight away that it was going to be able to travel on water
-
Some valid points actually.
-
I thought last night's episode was much better. No stupid explosions for one.
The 4C, looks great, and despite having it in the studio, they didn't put it around the track, but that maybe because it was so wet. But again, no real conclusion as to how good it was.
The quad bike - as soon as Clarkson turned up, you knew it was going to be something special and I do like the races, so I wasn't unhappy about that. But why was Clarkson not wearing a helmet or the right clothing for the water (or even a life-jacket)? BBC health and safety will have definitely demanded appropriate precautions be taken.
The star in the RPC. Who? I've no idea who he was. The interview was ok, but showing a full length Jaguar advert is a bit off for the Beeb.
The P1, awesome. But again, it was in the studio yet no timed lap. Maybe they'll do them when it's dry.
I was actually quite interested in the military vehicles section. Top Gear does seem to have great respect for the military, so it wasn't that suprising. It did highlight how much money was a) spent in Afghanistan and b) how much it's costing to withdraw from Afghanistan and bring back all the hardware.
Lets hope this improvement continues and episode 3 is better than this.

Seems I'm not the only one who does this- Star in a RPC I always skip through to the actual lap just in case they crash or something, the interviews are always mind-numbingly boring.
The P1 is very nice indeed. The army vehicle section I liked too, especially as I have a colleague at work who used to do military logistics so can ask them all about it.

Did you miss the bit about timing it in a couple of weeks against the Porsche?

Haven't you seen Thor and Avengers Assemble? He played Loki in both.

Nope.
I have kids and work shifts, therefore I don't get to see much at the cinema (maybe 3 times in the last year at most) or have much time to watch grown up films.
I still thought the interview was quite interesting though.

Nope.
Me neither. The last film I went to see was Disney Planes.

I loved the episode with the P1, thought the military section was interesting and the race bit was quite fun.
And as for having Tom Hiddleston as the guest, well that made my night!
Not seen the latest one yet, will probably watch that tonight.
-
LOL, Mrs actually complained to the BBC, she thought it was so bad this week!
-
It seems to be getting worse as the series goes on.
-
Well I liked it. What other programme would have one of the presenters aiming a blow torch at one of his colleagues plums?

Plays the part so well, he deserves respect. You baboons!

Who saw Fifth Gear last night? That's hardly moved on either, but we'll keep on watching it. I'm told a new series of Wheeler Dealers is due to start soon too.
-
Sweet, only last night I was saying it was due back on...much to my other halves disgust.

Nope cos it's now only on the Discovery channel.

I think the standard of the females standing behind them during The News section has deteriorated.
