Title: The forums latest MG.......... Its gone.
Post by: snifferdog on 20 October 2012, 09:43
Well, I enjoyed owning the Renault 19 16v, it was good fun. But I could never get my old ZR out of my head.

So, long story short, I sold the 19 for double what I paid for it  and bought this beauty!

Its just another 1.4 (as I didnt realise how much I enjoyed super cheap motoring), good fun to drive, rev happy engine etc etc.

It needs a few jobs doing and a damn good polish/t-cut whatever is best?!!

But for £600 with only 55K on the clock and a receipt for all the main jobs having already been done, you cant go wrong!

I dont expect to get much love for it on here but I do always love hearing what you guys have to say.

Mate, I would swap any of my previous golfs for this in an instant!

Anyway - done a few bits so far, mainly tidying up. The main thing though is my super cheap 'poundland' wheel refurb.

£3 per wheel!

And fitted to the car, will probably look better when its had a clean, its absolutely filthy at the minute!

Just power washed the car, the wheels have not fared very well haha.

In fact, they look bloody awful.

Pics to come when I go back out to the car.

Sorry mate, I realised that I realised that on the first wheel I did I had forgotten to use primer and that the paint was only flaking off of one wheel.

Anyway, I whooped it off today and did it again. Well, I actually de-did both of the rear wheels as they were the done the least well, first time round.

Its nowhere near a perfect job but Im not really bothered. As long as its not got bits flaking off everywhere.

I also went over to the MG factory in longbridge today for a free tour.  It was very interesting and looks very promising for the future of the site.

I saw the new 1.85 TD engine being fitted to the MG6 and also sat in a non UK spec MG3 which is starting to look promising.

Drove 2000 miles through Europe, taking in 6 countries. The ZR didnt miss a beat.

I ended up putting around 500ml of engine oil in towards the end but thats all.

The German autobahns are not a nice place for a 1400cc to be travelling for 5 hours straight but still, we kept up quite nicely, sticking to around 4K revs most of the time which is around 95mph.

One day, I thought the window washer jets had failed but they turned out to be iced up.

Anyway, a few pics of the trip -

Leaving Dover

Met some crazy Mexicans in Brussels and got super wasted

Which resulted in a fall down some stairs and a few facial injuries

Went to the Netherlands

Somewhere else

Hit the Romantiche Strasse in Germany, an awesome driving road!!

Got stuck in a parking space haha

Some nice open spaces for mucking about in the motor!

Class man how long where you away? Would love to do this sort of thing.  I had a blue one of these and in truth it was a really good car.

Not much to report really, apart from more trouble free motoring!!

Went to the Autosport International show and saw some nice MGs

Some nobhead in a Jag tried to use the last two spaces for his one car but I still managed to get in

It snowed

And last Sunday we had a huge snow dump and the only other car I saw in about 35 minutes of driving was an MG!!

I do have some proper plans for this car and the updates will come. The weather is just to crap to do anyhing worthwhile at the minute. Especially now I dont have a garage.

Good work fella. I'm struggling to resist the urge to add a ZR to the fleet. I have no use for one other than it would be fun to zip about in occasionally!

Yeah man, get one!!

Theyre ridiculous cheap at the minute. Not the most accomplished handlers but certainly good fun to thrash about and cheap to run and maintain

Which engine would you get? Ive gotta get a 160 soon, while the 1.4 is quick for what it is, its no hot hatch.

Dont think about going newer with the MG6 in 1.8t form. Its pish! Really poorly manufactured, and very disappointing performance and handling. I had one as a courtesy car when my Corrado was written off last year. They are pretty rare to see though! I had it 10 weeks in the end, and only saw one other in that time. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I've seen one since..............

I test drove one of those and thought it handled really well.

The reviews said that the handling was class leading too.

I dont think it felt all that quick though considering its about 2 secs quicker to 60 than my ZR.

How come you didnt like it? To be fair I seem to kiss MG ass at the minute (I think Ive become a fan boi ) so might just have my rose tinted specs on but I really liked it and want to own one when theyre a bit cheaper.

You probably won't have to wait long then with it being an MG!

It just felt a really wollowy. Mind you, I'd just come from my Corrado which was awsome handling standard, and it had been lowered 35mm so that could be a factor I suppose.

None of the interior trim panels lined up very well, you could see the exposed metal on the top of the door from inside, and could see a sort of square machine bend, instead of the seamless bend, and it was all cheap plastic dash. I also randomly kept getting an ESP light - on a car with 7k on when I got it. Even the key was shockingly cheap plastic crap!

Wasn't a fan at all I'm afraid.
Title: Re: The forums latest MG...........(Sideskirts fitted.)
Post by: snifferdog on 26 January 2013, 08:54
I can definitely agree with you on the key! It's the lightest key I've ever held and it felt really nasty. I think a few have been reported as broken already on the mg forums.

Still, I liked the car and hopefully will pick one up for a few grand in a year or two.
Theyre cheap and fun.

Obviously you had much more chance to look over one than what I did. So if I do end up getting one I'll keep an eye out for the poor build areas.

After the comments above, I went to Luffield MG last week to have another test drive but they were closed and only had 1 car in stock anyway.

Back on topic......

Painted the wheels silver as the black paint was cheap and nasty.

I didnt take the tyres off but I did spend more time doing the job and used a decent quality paint.

Looks better I think.

New wheels, an inch smaller than the straights at 16inches. I personally think that is the best sized wheel for a ZR though.

It feels more settled on the road and soaks up the bumps better.

Its amazing how much smaller they look though  :undecided:

Love the grids, I want a set 18" ones for the Zed but they command stupid money on eBay. Cheaper to buy a set of brand new LM reps.

Ahhhh Horney, the only person who cares about this thread

Ive always loved the grids too. I do kind of wish they were 17'' on the ZR though.

The 18's for the ZT look great, you should just bite the bullet and get some.
