What exactly is the point of these edition cars? The difference in price and bhp between the GTI and R isn't big enough to justify the need to have a car planted right in the middle.

Aren't they usually towards the end of the model cycle (sales boost); it'll probably be based around the GTI PP with a load of extras and a small power hike for not a lot more cash; so guessing around 250bhp/leather etc for around £28k in todays money.

Is there a place for it if the R comes in under £30k? Not sure.

The edition 30 GTI had a lovely looking factory body kit with different rear light clusters, an additional 30BHP (I think?) and edition 30 badging on the interior/exterior - the german model had matt black 18" monza II alloys

There isn't usually much difference but these limited editions are quite sought after now, if you keep an ED40 for 10 years it will be worth more than your run of the mill Mk7 GTI would.
