Wheels
« on: 03 January 2014, 16:10 »
Hi,

I've recently bought a mk5 gt tdi and want to change the wheels. I'm looking at buying some 18" Monza alloys.  Are the replica ones any good? Will I have to lower the suspension as I've gone from 16" to 18" wheel?

Cheers   :nerd:

wouldnt go reps. would get gen. iirc the gen ones arent too expensive anyway?

no you will not have to lower car, the profile of the tyre you need on the new alloy will be smaller making the rolling radius of the wheel the same (in lamens termsn, tyre wownt be as thick on 18" as it is on 16" alloy meaning if you stand them both togeather the tops of both tyres should be the same height)

however thinner tyres do look daft with massive arch gap.

so up to you on the lowering aspect.

You need to make sure they are 5x112. You don't have to lower it, that's personal preference.

Great, cheers for the help.

I will start looking.  Is EBay the best bet to find them?

thats a good point dom raised, quite alot of the reps are mk4 pcd, so make sure if you do get reps you get 5x112 for the mk5. if you get gen, thats another thing you dont have to worry about. as said though, you can proberbly pick up a good set with good tyres for circa £300~350.

My cousin has a mk5 1.6 with the rep monza wheels and we thought it looked a lot better with -20mm springs

I am getting a MK6 GTD which comes with the 17" on and was thinking about getting the replica Monza's

What are the reasons for not getting them? as a set of 4 are around £360 and the original VW are nearly that each!!

or can someone point me in the right direction for cheaper genuine ones? :-)

Generally the quality of reps isn't anywhere near OEM wheels, they are more prone to buckling/cracking. That said I'm running BBS CH Reps and haven't ran into any issues.
