Title: Phew !! Lucky it’s covered Heat shield/ Creaking noise/need new headlight
Post by: nunchuck on 29 September 2021, 12:32
Just had a call off local vw regarding heat shield under bonnet shrunk. Now new one 👍

Creaking noise when going over rough ground drivers side. Sort hopefully?  They manages to replicate it (creaking)when they took for drive. Used some special Lubricant on all joints seems to have sorted it
They are taking it for another test later and in the morning

It’s stopping in as I need a new headlight !!  What was happening was just in front of car was a beam of light on road
Just in front of car. When on full beam  Apparently the headlight is kaput need a brand-new one

They buy them in for £1200 each  Wow !  But it’s covered thank god.   My car is a 2019. Gti PP. just in case someone else is having similar problems.

By the under bonnet heat sheild, are you referring to the panel that is attached to the bonnet? Mine doesn't fit properly and droops down in one corner, perhaps I should ask about that under warranty?

Based on discussions on forums, under bonnet insulation pads drooping as a result of shrinkage seems to be quite a common problem.

VW seem to adopt their usual inconsistent approach to replacing these under warranty - some are replaced without question whereas others aren’t; where VW have declined warranty claims they seem to do so on the basis of the shrinkage being due to an ‘external influence’ - either heat shrinkage as a result of heat generated by the engine / turbo or by water through improper washing of the car .

The majority of the replacements also shrink, so presumably VW’s supplier haven’t changed the materials used in the manufacture of this part.

Thanks for that SR  So, if the replacements are no better, little point in replacing? I don't recall the issue on my MK7 though?

Perhaps VW used an inferior (cheaper) version in the mk7.5 compared to the one used in the mk7.

Had mine replaced at the last service... no issues, kept my fingers crossed, probably a cheap thing compared to the things I've got mine booked in for at the end of October.

I just fastened my under bonnet insulation up with a few cable ties, never had an issue since

I bought some 3M velcro tape to secure my underbonnet sound deadening, thought cable ties might go hard and brittle due to there proximity to the turbo.

The creaky front suspension is cured (??) by using a special grease as detailed in the workshop manual and a TSB.

Under bonnet sound deading. £128 .98

Greased top of shock absorber and bump stop £34 .08.  Hope that works

New near side headlight assembly £1368.85.

All under warranty

Picking up today.   Might ask about extended warranty, looking at those prices.  Well the head lights anyway

I take it that as nobody seems to have raised the fan noise from behind the AID that the sound I'm experiencing isn't normal?

This is one of the issues I have mine booked in for along with the creaking front suspension when turning after braking, also the hard piano black plastic around the AID makes a terrible noise over bumps.

All done no charge. , definitely taking out extended warranty in April.  Parts are really expensive. And here’s a question
Will parts go up like second hand cars ?

Check the small print in any extended / aftermarket warranty before you buy it - not everything will be covered, so you may still end up with a quite expensive repair bill if in the warranty providers opinion, a part or component that’s failed isn’t covered because of something in the small print.

Whether parts prices will increase in the same way as used car prices - I’m assuming you’re referring specifically to the impact of semiconductor supply shortages. IMHO if a part or component doesn’t contain semiconductors then there’s no reason why the price of that part would increase because of the semiconductor supply issues. Prices could still increase though - e.g. if the cost of raw materials, labour costs, overheads etc involved in manufacturing specific parts increase, then those increases will be passed on in the form of increased prices, but that’s always been the case.

Parts that include semiconductors in their manufacture could increase in price, particularly if there’s high demand for those parts and limited supplies available. Supply and demand will probably be the determining factor.

Had mine replaced under warranty about 6 months ago and already shrinking! Not enough fixing studs and poor quality material. Mk6 was also similar but took longer to lose its rigidity and fail.

I wish that were the case, however Cambelts & Water Pumps are going up and Skoda are currently up to £600 from £540, Volkswagen are still at £540 so only a matter of time before VW prices are raised.

With the rise of electric cars as well I can only assume labour rates will be increasing to well over £100 an hour at the dealers.

Cambelt and water pump retail price increases are unlikely to be semiconductor related - the reason could well be greediness on the part of VAG - charging more to offset loss of revenue suffered during Covid lockdowns.

You raise an interesting point about servicing costs and EV’s. Although there’ll be less work needed when servicing an EV (no oil, filter, plugs etc), I’m sure VAG will come up with a way to try and justify what they charge!. It’s possible that an air con service will form part of an EV’s standard service - I remember reading that in many (if not all) EV’s the A/C system is used to keep the batteries cool, therefore ensuring the A/C is working effectively and efficiently becomes more important than it is currently.

I have a creaky mk7 too! My indi vw specialist re greased the bushes, it worked for a year or so but its back now. They suggested it might need new bushes / top mounts if the problem comes back. I'm worried if we replace those and the problem returns I'll end up in a trial and error situation where the garage keeps suggesting parts that could fix it and a ever growing bill for repairs! So at the moment I've just left it as is. I might try get another opinion on it from another garage. Creaking seems to be a common issue, but the fixes seem to be quite different depending on which forums / websites you look at.

If mine still creak after they're looked at then I'll wait until I'm out of warranty and treat myself to a full set of Bilstein's including mounts... hopefully they'll last a long time and improve the ride.

Find an Indy with microphones to pin point the noise.

Under bonnet insulation was the subject of a topic I posted months ago. I am in my third “pad”, first two replaced under warranty at service visits without question.
Happy to report that this third one is perfect after 6 months so all good.
Yes, it was suggested that it was the heat from the engine that did it. Referred to as “the heat shield that protects the bonnet from inside”.
Just badly designed I think.
Anyway, it is fixable under warranty with a new one. Def get it done by dealer.

All done.  Will defo take out extended warranty in March.

Probably had £1600 worth of work done in last 6 weeks.

Thanks for that, I need to pop by the dealers so will ask.
