Got a 4 wheel alignment done for first time since new and found back wheels significantly “out”, fronts a wee bit off and steering wheel offset from straight ahead. All now corrected to factory standard.

I’m putting this down to the state of our roads after 4 yrs/32,000 miles as the wheels have never suffered any impacts.

I used to get this check on all my previous GTIs every 2 yrs but became complacent with the current car.
Cost me £60 so money well spent I think.

The car feels better…….or is it my imagination??
Whatever, it’s good to know it’s back to factory fresh in this respect at least.

Just to give more detail, the rears were out beyond factory tolerance both on camber and toe. Likewise one of the fronts. Interesting it was the rears as I would have thought fronts were more susceptible to forces and impacts.

Mine is getting done next week after letting the springs settle. Out of interest how do they adjust all the different "alignments"?

They’re all saved on a master database to show what the values should be, and then they adjust accordingly to match the factory tolerances.

If you mean adjusting the different angles on a MK 7/7.5 the front toe is detemined by the steering arm length and adjusting the total length by turning the track rod end either in or out. (Unscrew anticlockwise = Longer = toe in)

Castor and camber is not really adjustable but camber can be tweaked slightly so its similar both sides by moving the front subframe relative to its mountings.

The rear however is fully adjustable for toe and camber using eccentric bolts and mountings in the suspension components.

I know I'm in the minority when I say this but the normal dials and needles look far better than the digital dash.
