After 18 months of ownership, I discovered today that the armrest slides forward

You know you can have it in two different height positions as well, don't you?  By raising the lid until it clicks into upper or lower positions.

Only two positions?  I thought it had a few different ones.

More if you count it being closed and fully open.

Mine must be a special one then because it has 4 different positions and that is not counting closed.

I've not sat there and counted them, because I can't be arsed.

One of the first things I check in a new car is the armrest because of my left arm. It is more important to some than others.

Yes it all depends if you use it.    In 12 years of Golfs I've not used an armrest for arm resting once.

Me too - shiny dark mirrors against the white looks good - went carbon on mine but quite similar.

Don't think it would work on something like a Lapiz blue R, the silver looks good on them.

Coming off a bike at over 140mph did this to my arm along with other stuff to my shoulder and back.

Ouch! That looks nasty, at least you are still able to tell the story. You must be pretty good at pedalling to get to that speed

Presumably on a track, what were you doing?

Booked it a slot for Business Parking at T5 next week as made a last minute decision to go to the Frankfurt motor show, I want to take a gander at the UP GTI and Polo GTI as possible replacements for the R estate next year
