It is plug and play and quite easy on LHD car where the fuse box is not in the way.....

On an RHD model you need to pull off left hand side door sill trim, undo a nut on rear seats trim (for which the seat cushion needs to come out). B-pillar trim can stay in but needs to be unclipped. And then the pain begins, passenger airbag switch and surrounding trim need to be unclipped, so does the trim below (as it clips into door sill trim and side trim with airbag off switch in it. Then glove box needs to come out, so first remove radio (borrow your gf/wife's nail files) then for actual whole glovebox (and not just the lid) you need to unclip the centre tunnel trim (just the left side thou), but hey that'd be boring so VW hid one of the screws behind the trim for the air conditioning (which luckily is easy to take off). Then once you have the whole glove box out (screwed on with 6 or 7 screws.... one behind the radio in the glovebox) you can route the cable and remove two wires from the radio harness (they need to be unpinned carefully) and push two from p&p loom in..... and remove iso plug for speaker and plug into p&p harness and the one from harness into radio......

It took me around 2-2.5h without specialist documentation / tools..... looking at the amount dealer has quoted you I'd guess they would be able to do it in 1-1.5h, or at least assume so...... it is doable though but a bit unnerving to take apart your brand new car ;)

My Thinkware F770 dual dashcams arrived today, looks a good piece of kit with plenty of functionality and a tidy form factor. I need to dig out my trim removal tools and await the arrival of my piggy back add-a-circuit leads. I'm very handy with all of my tools, but I do struggle keeping track of them. I put them down in random places and spend more time looking for them than using them!

Definitely not a user fit IMHO!

I was reading somewhere that you have to install something on the audio unit using USB something too?

No need to install anything over USB. The amp (DSP one) can be programmed with different sound profiles (e.g. 3 door hatch, 5 door hatch or estate ... as well as different car models) with a separate standalone programmer (not VCDS or VCP). This plugs directly into amp itself.
I got that programmed by supplying dealership (got mine from Germany for 150£ less than VW in Warrington who supplied the car).

On a RHD car there is a small connector that needs to be inserted into amp to tell it the driver sits on the right.

More this weekend - been up north to visit OH's family, near 500 mile round trip. Must say what an excellent drive the GTI is, really comfy, good cruiser and minimal gear changing required with the excellent torque. The ride up on Friday night was long with lots of traffic but 41 economy with the run back being much faster with lots of 85ish cruising but still over 38mpg. I continue to be impressed by this car, it's breadth of talents and personalities is brilliant, it really can do everything

Ordered a set of of these (pair) from badgeskins, to cover up the distracting airbag labels on the passenger sun visor.  Went for the reverse to the pic - matte black background, gloss black VW emblem and R logo.

For anyone intetrested, size required for our cars is 122m x 73mm (VW 12273) .  Fitting instructions here.

That's another 5 bhp added.  It's amazing how all these tiny increments add up. My R is a bhp monster now.

I can safely say I don't even notice the labels nowadays so wouldn't say its any sort of distraction.

I've got an emergency bar of Cadbury dairy milk taped to my sun visor, so no need for stickers :)

(it had to go there, the under seat storage is full of Battenberg)
