Currently in Vegas with my Golf GTI hire car. It's a Carbon Grey DSG 5 door. Main differences between this and UK spec are: Halogen lights (they're like a pair of candles) no digital climate control, a manual   handbrake, no ACC, very soft suspension, parking camera (but no parking sensors)

Another main difference would be the engine which also isn't the same as the UK GTi

Anyone wondering whether to get an R or a GTI, I'd say get the R, the performance difference is pretty substantial (and it is running on 95, not crappy 91).

Here we go...

Next you will be telling us about the bridgestones...

It does have an SOS button in the roof console to link you to the breakdown services, front and rear lights are just like you'd get on a Base model Golf. Other than those differences it looks pretty much like a UK model.

So glad my R is manual, the DSG is so dimwitted when left to its own devices. Anyone wondering whether to get an R or a GTI, I'd say get the R, the performance difference is pretty substantial (and it is running on 95, not crappy 91). It's a thirsty bugger too, averaging 21mpg (US gallons), so about 26 miles to the proper gallon.

Going to drive it to the Hoover Dam today.

You go all the way to Vegas and you hire a Golf, you are such a VW fanboy MH   . Should have got a mustang or a cadillac

Now I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but after my previous comment about how nice it was getting back into my GTD (and it is), one of my work colleagues came to work today in his early Christmas present to himself.

Wait for it, a Focus 5 door ST-3 250ps manual, in deep metallic blue and 19" alloys. He said he pretty much ticked every option they had so it has Leather heated Recaro's, electric everything, xenon's, 8" Sat Nav with connect, electric tilt and slide sunroof, all the safety options (blind spit, traffic recognition etc.), basically loaded.

I have to say, and I have a hard time saying this, the interior was quite a nice place to be. The re-modelled dash as part of the 2015 facelift, is much nicer and quite logical. The seats are superb, and boy did it go with a deep growl from the central exhaust.

However, here's the kicker. Fully loaded the car at list came in under £30k, and with a drive the deal discount, he got it for under £24.5K. Even with the deprecation, that's a pretty good price for a decent motor, and makes the Golf's look very expensive. Obviously his was a manual, but Ford told him early next year they will introduce their new 6 speed power shift DSG type box to the ST range.  I expected to not like it but in the end, it was a very nice motor for sensible money.

Gonna seal them with a product called Planet Polish seal & shine

Tyres are Toyo Proxes T1 Sport, got a great deal on them at a local tyre company that owed my wife a favour

Thats a pretty crappy spec on the USA GTI. One of the selling points of the GTI is that its got a very high base spec.

Going to drive it to the Hoover Dam today.

I misread that the first time, I thought you said "drive it off the Hoover Dam" :D

After further scrutiny it has no cruise control of any description, no auto lights, no rain sensor and no dimming rear view mirror. On the plus side the interior is head an shoulders better than anything US domestic. Did OK going to the Hoover Dam, there's a few twisted on the approach, but the speed limits are ridiculously low so didn't get a chance to check out the handling. Would not supreme me if it didn't have multilink rear suspension as you never get a chance to test it over here. Off to see Star wars at the huge IMAX in the Palms casino, US got it a day later than UK. Setting off back to the UK tomorrow night.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....
