Just for info, but there are two 'Action Days' on 24th April and 12th June at Castle Combe Circuit, Wiltshire. Basically it is open to anyone and anything and costs ?20 for 5 laps of the circuit. A reasonable amount if you just want a quick blast around a track and a good day out just to spectate. One problem is you do get some idiots who cant drive....but usually they trash their cars, which goes down well with spectators!!
-
Well worth going to this... I go every year...
They hace CCC days (cars and car conversions)
Action Days
Japfest
And more..
Good track too.
-
Apparently this year CCC are not sponsoring the event (not sure who is), not that it makes any difference as it is still a cracking day out to see anything from a mini to a ferrari gun it around the track!! ;D
-
On another note VW Driver magazine (who organise GTI International) are running their annual VAG track day in July (26th I think). This is open to VAG cars only and costs ?120 for the day, and you get a lot of track time. You also get less cars on the track and less idiots.....but some still remain!!! Have a look at www.autometrix.co.uk for info.
-
Where is Castle Combe and is this properly run as I don't really want some idiot crashing into my Corrado, and what is the difference between this one and the other one advertised for ?120?
Cheers,
Paul

Castle Combe is in Wiltshire just off the M4 (www.castlecombecircuit.co.uk). The Action Day is organised by the circuit themselves and is basically a 'run what ya brung' day. A relatively cheap way of getting your car on a track. It is always a busy day with loads of different motors. It is properly organised with marshalls and safety staff and you have the briefing beforehand telling you what you can and cant do (overtaking etc etc). You will always get those people that cant drive on a track but generally the only damage is to one car when it hits the barrier or to someones ego throuh their own fault. They also put people out based on their track experience.
The VW Driver day is a specific track day (i.e. you pay your money for the whole day and not just for 5 laps). This day (24th July) is also only open to VAG cars. This is also properly organised and less cars on the track at any one time. When I have spectated at this event it is a lot more relaxed and generally people are more respectul, i.e. you dont get any of the RS Turbo brigade!!
Hope that helps
-
It is also possible to arrange club space, so if enough of us were to go to the Action Day it would be good to get a GolfGTI area!! Any takers??
-
Thanks 8vgti, that really helps, looks like I'm going then, should be a laugh as long as the insurance co. don't find out, lol.
Where are you from?
-
It is usually a really good laugh, even if you only spectate. I'm from Cheltenham by the way...you?
-
Morpheus, I would recommend you take out track day insurance, especially if you're taking your daily drive round the track. :)
-
Seeing as i live just outside Chippenham i'll be going...
It is always a laugh....
-
Well I'm from Brighton but I will be going if I can get the insurance for track days in time, more money I don't have.
I've heard that the one in April is a bit mad as it can result in your car getting hit by some idiot that can't drive so the one in June and then July are better, is this correct?
-
Its all just good or bad luck..
Very rarely does someone get taken out by another driver.
I dont think it matters when you go... Most of the idiots who go out end up in the fence at quarry corner anyway!
-
I agree with danhock as most of the idiots just crash on their own. Only once have I seen a collision at CC and that was when a TVR touched the grass going into Quarry Corner and t-boned a Saxo into the tyre wall......so it didnt really matter then!!!! ;D I will say from spectating that the VW Driver event in July is more 'relaxed' that the same events in April and June, but that is probably due to less people attending. It is also a specific track day, as opposed to the Action days which are quite rare in the sense you can turn up on the day and just pay for x number of laps. Go along and see for yourself, if you like the look of it in April you can then take part in June!!
-
I've just seen where it is, might have to wait until June to afford the trip, lol.
Keep in touch people that are going and hopefully we can meet up there or somewhere anyway.
What we all driving?
Corrado here, H reg, on the gallery.
-
Mk3 '97 P 8v GTI
-
I'm going out for a play and to pop my track day cherry ;) Cant wait I've got an early pass so hopefully none of the muppets will be out of bed :)
-
its a fun track....
Watch out for Avon rise though....
-
8) Cheers I've been watching a friends in car vid of him going round it looks like fun ;D
-
You can take Avon rise flat..... but you need big balls.... and flippin excellent brakes!
-
Hummm well I'm not sure I have either of those lol ;)
-
plain loony would suffice tho............. :P
-
Loony is my middle name ;D
-
So who's going this saturday then, just so I know what cars to look out for??
-
i'll be there.
-
i'll be there.
I will keep an eye out for your motor. Are you going on the track?
-
havent bought a track pass...
Motor isnt really ready, brakes arent working how they should as ive just fitted new shoes and pads.
-
I'll be going but wont be on the track tho, still looking for a set of track-day wheels and tyres
-
I just signed up for the track day at Castle CombeSaturday on the July 24, I'm really looking forward to it!
I'm only in a slow old 8v and it will be my first ever track day so go easy on me :)
I plan to see out the Toyo's on the front as they will need replacing soon anyway, I'm also thinking of fitting some Eibach antiroll bars, should make it a little more interesting for me on the day and hopefull I won't hold up following cars so much through the corners ;)
What sort of mix of cars will be there, I know it's only VW group, but is it mainly only modified, or will there be many standards cars there, and any good advice?
-
Not able to make the track day in July, but am going to the one on 12th June....open to any car. When I have spectated at the VW track days there is a mix of cars, from standard to race prepared (VW Cup Beetle/Vento). Wouldnt worry about your Golf as I have seen polos and all sorts going round!! For a first time track day I would say it is pretty good as there seems to be a lot of 'sensible' drivers, as opposed to the Action days in April and May where you get some idiots...but they then provide the entertainment for spectators when they stuff it into the tyre wall!!
-
Anyone going along to the second Action Day at Castle Combe this weekend?? ???
-
yep.... get down there before the footy.
-
yep.... get down there before the footy.
I will look out for you again Danhock, as I didnt spot you last time although that was the busiest I have ever seen it. Mind you after an initial wander round I stayed put at quarry corner.....and got slightly cooked!! This time I will go prepared for sun. See you there
-
yeah ok...
i'll park up at quarry corner.... shouldnt be able to miss my car !!
-
Will be on the lookout....perhaps if you get one of those flags I will see you for sure!!?? ;D
-
no chance!!!
Whats your motor look like?
-
Mk3 8v, '97 P, Candy white, totally standard. Will park up by Quarry or just before depending on the crowds....although may be getting a lift in a mates Audi Quattro
-
I went on the Sunday afternoon. saw some nice cars. Was with my son-in-law Billy coz he is trying to sell his red MkII Golf.
Saw some good race action - also a poor Civic get totalled!

Unlucky Civic driver......at least it wasnt a VW ;D Usually a good idea to attempt to go round Quarry as opposed to straight on!!
-

Don't put mine on the track as I'm too much of a pussy and don't want to wreck my daily driver

So who's going on the 24th April then?
Its only down the road for me so will probably put in an appearance. Not on the track tho.
Did the Racing School thing there a few years ago and dont like the track.
-
I'll be going, but i aint going on the track either vel.
Apparently this year CCC are not sponsoring the event (not sure who is), not that it makes any difference as it is still a cracking day out to see anything from a mini to a ferrari gun it around the track!!  ;D
its sponsered by golf+ magazine
-
This is teh one on the 23rd?
Well if so we are going, Gary wants to take the GT round with the G40 guys hmm but I don't want my daily driver broken like Bronze says!

I've told Velly that I'll do a 6 lap run now :undecided:
