Coolant/Fan issue?
« on: 28 June 2021, 09:24 »
Evening all,

Long time VW owner, first GTI

3dr Carbon Steel Gray Metallic.  Few dings to sort out both exterior and interior.

I did have one issue when driving it home (5 hour journey!)

The coolant warning popped up, checked it and it was pretty low.  Topped it up this morning and it seems fine.  It feels like its running very hot, temp gauge is reading 90 but still feels hot.  The fan only runs when the engines on.  All other VWs I've owned, the fans run even after turning the engine off.  Is this a GTI thing??

Sounds OK to me. Pretty sure, without checking, that my fans don’t run after turning off. I think I remember this being aircon fans anyway. There was a fault with Mk5 aircon fans failing, which was apparent if they didn’t run after turning off. The system must be different on the Mk7. I’d just monitor the car and enjoy it!

Could be the waterpump/thermostat housing.....

Got it booked in to VW on Wednesday

I've had awful luck with a few cars in the past, so worth having it checked over  :undecided:

Keep an eye on the coolant level - loss of coolant and / or the coolant level dropping might be an indication of the water pump or thermostat housing failing - not uncommon with the EA888 2.0 litre engine in the GTI.

My fans have never run when the engine is turned off.

As said keep an eye on the coolant level just in case the thermostat housing is leaking.

Finally got the car back after 3 days at VW

They found a leak in the waterpump/thermostat housing, they've replaced that and seems to be fine.

They also noticed a rattling (I did too when I picked the car up but thought nothing of it. Loose tool in the boot or something?)

Anyway, 3 hours of searching and they couldn't find anything....

Hope this isn't a dud of a car

Thanks for the advice about the waterpump! Very much appreciated :nerd:

Glad they sorted the leak.

Check the plastic collar that holds the spare down. Mine rattles like a bugger when it is loose.
