Go on the Vw Ireland website and build yourself a Gti, The price on there was shocking

Just done that. Price of a GTI with no options is €57,750 / £49,126. Choosing an optional paint colour (Kings Red) and 19” Queenstown alloys + DCC pushes the price up to €61,143 / £52,013. Plundering the options list and I managed to get up to around €70,000! (just under £60,000). That’s crazy stupid money for a Golf.

I’ve not owned a Golf since my mk6 in 2011-2016 and at those prices I won’t be buying a mk8.5 any time soon.

Believe it or not, it’s actually slightly cheaper than the outgoing car!
And it has some kit as standard now that was previously optional - camera and winter pack. So… good value then, eh…

The MK8 Clubsport was around €4,800 more than the standard car, so assuming it’s similar for the new one, then it’s likely to start at about 63k and easily touching €70k when you tick a few essentials. I expect those dreadful 18’s will still be the standard wheel and it looks like you need to spec DCC with 19’s. So that’s easily another 2k+ for that combo alone.
MK8.5 GTI Clubsport. Moonstone grey. Queenstown 19’s. DCC. Harmon Kardon sound. Pano roof.

It begs the question what a mk8.5 R will cost when a few ‘essential’ options are added  .

As for the price of a fully loaded mk8.5 R, I dread to think what that might cost.

I seem to remember reading that VW have recently moved to the agency model - initially for EV’s but presumably ICE cars will follow. That’ll mean the only price reduction available against the list price of a new VW will be the PCP finance deposit contribution.

I hope VW UK have been realistic with their future sales projections………………

Remember Ireland has some crazy taxes on "pollution"...

I'd expect a base UK clubby to be 45k rrp...R probably 47k

There’s a lot I like in Ireland.   The rates of VAT and Vehicle Registaration taxes not so much.   The latter much jigher than in UK.  Please bear this in mind when using the VW Ire Configurator.

Our VRT in Ireland is insane alright so don’t panic on the prices - will be cheaper in UK, although I’d expect some increase.

Our VRT was ‘designed’ to discourage ICE cars and make v attractive but our EV sales are now declining If you think the GTI is bad I changed to an R last year here and it set me back €93k!

Here’s a video review I found of a pre release camo wrapped 8.5 R, interestingly the guy states that the touch steering wheel buttons are to remain on the 8.5 R, however I wonder if it’s just a case of this pre release having an older wheel fitted, due to it being some sort of mule??

I’ve seen at least a couple other mentions that R models of various cars not just Golfs will keep the pads not revert to buttons. Autogefühl’s Thomas mentioned it too in a recent model release vid.

Is it me or has the price of the GTI actually gone down with the 8.5?

It's confirmed to start at £38,900. I think by current standards and what we were expecting that is a great price, especially once discounts kick-in on Drive the Deal. I actually just bought a used 7.5 a couple of months ago, as I was sure this would be starting at over £40k. Doh!!!
