Mk6 GTi electrical issue/battery drain
« on: 15 November 2022, 13:02 »
The Last 2 weeks I have heard a weird buzzing/electrical noise coming from the engine bay.  This is when the engine is off.

I removed some rubber trim in the engine bay near to the windscreen and it sounded like the noise was coming from the windscreen wiper motor or somewhere near it.

Today I removed Fuse 19 (30A) (Windscreen Wipers) from the fuse box in the engine bay and the noise was still present.

Anyone heard or come across this?

Whatever is making the noise it is fully draining the battery within 24 hours.

Will try and link a video.

Just a guess but it maybe a fault sound actuator circuit making the noise if coming from that location.

So I found out if I remove this fuse the noise stops.

I think its Fuse 17.

If that's only what the fuse powers it maybe one of those faulty.
Do you have an aftermarket radio fitted?
Does the alarm siren work when you set-off the car alarm?

No aftermarket radio.  Its the standard vw one with cd player (no sat nav). That was still working when fuse was removed.  I assume signal relay is for the indicators as they dont work when fuse 17 is removed.

Never tried to set off the alarm before.

The siren is top of the drivers wing so it maybe were the sound you could hear was coming from.

Thanks.  Yeah, the noise is definitely coming from the driver's side wing.  I put Fuse 17 back in after it was out for 48 hours and weirdly no clicking noise now.  Will see how it goes...

FYI

Battery drain issue was caused by the siren under drivers wing.

It was badly coroded.
