Oh ... my ... f*ck!n ...

This is the pr!ck that done me £160 for an iPhone ... I dont understand though??? PayPal returned the cash back to me after 30 days of a filed case and his messages all looked genuine aswell ... he's obviously still managing to pocket the money some how, I bet he's got a duff account set up so he gets the cash and paypal chase him instead of us !!! Im curious to know how he's working his little scam ...

If your ever going to buy from someone on here i think you should at least check out their profile before.

He registered on the 13th February 2010 and didn't make a post till the 4th of March and since then has only got 10 posts? how convenient!

Once again ... no ones taking to note the 'art' of this scam.

He's targeting people that require certain items ASAP. Like me for example, I had my iphone stolen that weekend at a party so put up a message on here saying id part with £150 if any one had one for sale ... toomany then conveniantly messaged me saying he'd had one on Orange but its unlocked etc but he wants £200 .... I haggled him down to £160 and to my luck he said "do you know what, because yours got stolen, go on i'll let you have mine if you pay cash and pick it up" and boom ... I got scammed!! simple as that really, he tricked me well, and I never fall for scams. He acted like a legit seller offering pick up and the works ... he obviously knew I wouldnt go for the option of picking up and id send funds via paypal as im 200 miles away ...

He is cleverly stooopid. I have bought a fair few parts on trust but only if they have been on the site a fair amount of time. Failing that I always collect with cash.

What a prick. The important thing is to keep check of anybody's profile on this site like GTI_Wherry said. Hell I'd even say check mine to people that didn't know me but it's all about making sure the people are genuine.

He can be banned and most likely is/will be, but he can easily come back with a different IP address and do it all again under a different account name. He's been here on more than one occasion and there is no solid way unless there is someone dedicated to checking everyone's IP addresses each and every minute (which there isn't).

toomany is banned

alas no, that USERNAME is, he has had a few on here i think you will find.

as will his IP, but as the admin will confirm, dependant on his service provider, then a few people on here could come under the same company thus would mean banning innocent folk too.

The only way to stop getting scammed is use COMMON SENSE

this grade a mock cuncher seems to have got so many people.

ip address tracking can sometimes help but it is far from easy. for example, aland has been linked to the same ip as toomany in the past.

as chuff says, common sense is the real answer. for example, what do you think to this thread?
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=151713

now to me, that smells to high heaven. new sign up, did 10 posts then has something for sale that is way too cheap. account can also be seen doing a lot of reading of the wanted section. it very well could be genuine but what do people need to make them more aware/suspicious?

as much as there is some humour about this subject at the moment, this is getting a bit ridiculous now.

totally appreciate you and anyone else standing up and admitting to the scam but seriously, 2 things need doing. firstly, we need to sort out what else can be done to warn people of this crap, protect people further because clearly this is too easy a scam to pull. secondly, how do we join this all together, everyone who has been done, report it all, secure a 'result' etc?

it's all about having abit of common sense really? if the deal is cheap and sounds to good to be true then i wouldnt trust the trade, nothing in life comes cheap as many ppl have learnt through this nik cnut, personally i wouldnt trade cash to any1 on here with less than atleast 100 post's and i allways check how long they have been registerd on the forum for, maybe im way to paranoid but hey i havnt been scammed on here? just my opinion

i know I said it before but what about some kind of feedback/rating system?  or photos of products with the username written on a piece of paper in the photo... no username in photo of products - no sale - simple but it helps on other forums... that way people cannot make up stuff they have for sale?

Title: Re: Name and Shame Scammer

rateing system sound's a good idea, kinda work the same as fleabay feedback??
Title: Re: Name and Shame Scammer
Post by: jv on 17 April 2010, 00:10
i have not seen a way to split apart a forum 'karma' (crap forum account feedback thing) from one only relating purely to the classifieds. eg how would the forum know that you have listed an item for sale, it's been sold and you can now have feedback applied? not simple.

i added this earlier, http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=151829.0 maybe i need to add more warnings?!
Title: Re: Name and Shame Scammer

well it might help some make a judgement... anyone with a rating of zero will make people more wary

obviously the more genuine sales you achieve the better your feedback/rating or whatever is likely to be instilling more confidence

at least then it is visual and some kind of guidance to how people might conduct the transaction

how about a post at the end of each transaction... then people can refer to previous transactions...

or maybe something in account settings - somehow... i don't know the technicalities... but everything is possible on the interworldwidewebbings
Title: Re: Name and Shame Scammer
Post by: supernova9635 on 17 April 2010, 00:24
i would say.. even as it means i couldnt post-

a minimum of 50 or 100 posts before you can even access the classifieds section.. that'll help alot. bear in mind- it was a wanted advert i got stung over, i had my phone number on it, bast*rd text me.. i wasnt paying attention to his forum account details, or replying to a for sale ad.

this scum is targeting the wanted section..

i say, swing a heavy hand, 50posts or more before you can view classifieds, 50posts and 30days befroe you can post a for sale ad.

that'll work for the better?

Title: Re: Name and Shame Scammer

and maybe some kind of postal address verification... like send something in the post first and have it sent back before money is exchanged?
Title: Re: Name and Shame Scammer

is a theoretical trader rating of 0 really any different to a 1 day old forum account on 13 posts? if yes, how does a new user ever 'trade'? if no, then there is no point.

much like any 'wouldnt it be great if the forum did x' type suggestions, unless it is fully written to support smf it's a nightmare for future upgrades/security fixes/etc/etc

the other issue is that if you make it more difficult to potentially scam do users then have too much trust for sellers on here? say for example, we upped the figure from 10 too 100 posts before you can use the pm system. it makes it look more 'secure' but how easy is it to hit 100?!

You can generally tell the good guys on the forums etc. I'll name three people I'd deal with who I have never dealt with before:

Chuff, Guy and Diamond Hell

I know they're good guys due to sales they've done before and general forum usage.

If they are new, make them take photo's of the items with their user name in the background and maybe an envelope with their address. Pay by PayPal etc. with NO gift and if near enough go and meet them.

i refer you back to my earlier post and my PM JV.

as a few have admitted, they didnt CHECK things first.

75% of this is common sense and realising that The bargain IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.

Until then, no matter what you do, people will get ripped off.  :lipsrsealed:

in theory no jv... but it would be an indication. how do people start trading on the bay with no feedback... someone takes a calculated risk

i see what you are saying about 'wouldn't it be great if the forum did x' suggestions... but ideas are good as it introduces alternative thinking... something suggested 'might' be possible, easily, which 'might' solve the problem (then again it might not!) - this idealistic thinking is also why i suggested more practical solutions like each user popping a bit of feedback in the thread after each sale for reference... and also putting usernames in photos and sending an envelope one way and then returned in the post to verify address (that way if the sh1t hits the fan there will be a place to visit and say hello )
Title: Re: Name and Shame Scammer

again, easy to get round,  scrotes have bigger scrote mates - willing to lend  a hand and all that

I just wish i could sell common sense, i could make a fortune

and yes this could be read as me having a go  BUT if one person learns from a LOT of peoples  mistakes it will be worth the abuse

but lets go thru a few steps

You Place a wanted ad and you get contacted by PM, email, text , reply on thread or even just see an ad placed . . . . . . . .

1, New member - check ( yes  i know not all newbies are out to scam people  )

2, wont allow collection - check ( not always possible I know, but you can ask if a forum " trusted member " lives close and can go and " view " the item for you  - how can you collect summat that doesnt exsist  )

3, price too good to be true - check ( COMMON SENSE - alarm bells should be ringing now  :undecided: )

4, and i still get a further price reduction - check ( perhaps he fancies you - why else would he reduce a  bargain price further )

5, wants payment by bank transfer only - check ( ZERO come back - all details CAN and proberly are FALSE - Theres those bells again  )

yes, nowt dodgy about that - lets send him £'s

Harsh i know, but most people in this thread have admitted to at least one of the above .

Title: Re: Name and Shame Scammer
Post by: VR6_Wherry on 17 April 2010, 10:10
People are always going to scammed at some point whether it's on this forum or somewhere else. Theres nothing that can be done in any extent. Up the post count only makes it more of a challenge to the scammer then a deterrant! As Chuff said just follow the steps..

JV it's a good idea to have a sticky warning people about and i think in theory that's the best that you can do. (If the Police can't stop scammers then who the fcuk can?) Only thing is that people don't even read how to SEARCH or use PM's.

If i'm honest i probably wouldn't want to sell on here now, as i live offshore things will take longer to get over. I wouldn't want to be another victim of being wrongly accused of being a scammer as this has happened plenty of times before.

When buying things, just be cautious

Well he's back again by the looks of things  i should read more of the off topic section and this would of saved me some ball ache.

Any ill post what happened, last tuesday i posted in the wanted section for a jazz blue bumper for a mk4, couple hours late i get a pm from toomany saying that he has a one for sale and gives me a contact number. So following day i text him asking details ie condition, price. I haggle with him on the price and get it down to what i wanted to pay (great ) he then sends me a text at 1715 asking if i can get to a money shop by 1730 as he posting something else that day.

I say no i cant as im at work but can pay by paypal, no more response that day, following day get another text im i still intrested, i say yes but will only pay by paypal few hours later i get a email to pay with paypal, so i think great, but as im at work i just use my phone to sort payment and think nothing more, had a real busy weekend so never chased anything up, texted him yesterday asking if there was any kind of tracking number or ref no reply, tried again today with text and pm from here.

Then i read some of the project pages and come across smitty last post on his build page and "toomany" is there, i think arrr ive just been put over a barrel and f***ed  , so done a quick search and found loads of pages on here about this s*** which has lead me to here, so im off to start a despute with paypal and see where i get.....if anyone is intrested i have mob. number and paypal address.

I only tell you this as a warning to others that he is still using site
