GTi TCR Good Investment?
« on: 09 May 2022, 15:41 »
My brother is looking at buying a black TCR which has very low miles and extremely good spec, as its a ltd model I wonder if its a secure investment?

Difficult to judge at the moment with all makes and models getting strong money for the last year or so.

I would say fairly inline with the CS (not the CSS).  For me I think it is better than the CS sans the buckets and looking back is probably the pick of the GTI's outside the CSS which for most won't be an everyday car.  I know some will prefer older gens like MK5 etc but think it will stand up well.

I think if it had come with buckets as simple as that sounds it would have probably felt a bit more special for some, also the price when it came with the Akra exhaust went against it a little.

I have one so fingers crossed it keeps some value but based on my track record I am not 100% confident

It depends on your definition of what a secure investment is. It would help if you clarified that point and what your brother intends to do with it.

I think he’d be ok, bought my GTI new in December 2018, paid £28k for it and is now worth about £23 - £24k on a private sale, not that she’ll ever get sold.

I suppose the biggest problem is the current inflated prices for secondhand cars. The bubble will burst at some point but who knows how the prices will settle. Personally I don't think the TCR will fare much better than a GTIP or an R. But, it is a great car and at the very least your brother will enjoy driving one!

The TCR will end up commanding a small premium over a GTI PP/ R, the same as what a CS will do. It was not as special as a CSS, but it was build to celebrate the VW TCR race car, so there is that. No used car is worth the current asking money, so your brother will loose money if he bought one now, no matter how good/ clean the example is.

I think over time it will be a classic, only 300 made wasn't it?, this one also has very rare spec, leather, sunroof, electric seats, DCC etc.

About 860 in the UK alone, your 300 number I believe refers to how many in the SA market.
