There is a plastic frame that clips into the centre console that the gear lever gaitor attaches to.
The leather gear surround is just elasticated around the bottom so that it just grips on the plastic of the console and should just pull off.
The plastic bit in the console can also be removed though, probably with the aid of a screw driver.

If you have a rubber concertina style gear lever gaitor or your leather one is knackered, just get a replacement for about 10 quid from GSF. That's what I did.

It's basically a little plastic square, it might be a little flimsy. But you should just be able to prise it out with a flat head screwdriver.

You shouldn't need the entire centre console.

Take the gear knob off
Squeeze the bottom of the gear lever gaitor and pull it up, it should unclip, if not, use the screwdriver to prise it out of the centre console.
Pull it off the gear lever
Attach the new leather gaitor to the plastic frame
put over the gear lever
push down into the centre console
replace gear knob.

Easy job, take a couple of minutes.
