Title: New Tyres
Post by: mcmaddy on 22 September 2018, 12:10
Costco have a current offer of 80 quid off if you buy four Michelin PS4 so all in fitted would be about £332. I've been looking on all the usual tyre sites and can't get anywhere near that price. Dilemma is I've still got approx 3mm left on the front and about 5-6mm on the rears (factory Bridgestone). Going by the mileage I've done I reckon I've got another 2 to 2.5k miles left on the fronts but with the cold weather approaching I'm thinking of just changing all four. Not sure to wait for next Costco offer but don't know how often they appear. Any opinions would be appreciated.

That is a bargain, but I'm simply too tight to throw away my Bridgestones while there is still a lot of tread on them.
If I hadn't spent a fortune this summer, I could have been tempted though

I've got plenty on the rears but if I was replacing the fronts I'd just do all 4. They do seem a good price although I've never been to Costco for tyres.

I was thinking exactly the same and have slightly less tread on mine. Costco offer on Michelin’s are every 3 to 4 months but the discount is usually 50 or 60 for 18s

Offer runs out tomorrow so better hurry!

A bargain is only a bargain if you need it. My wifes latest shoes may be a bargain to her as they were half price, but as she has a cupboard full of shoes that aren't worn out yet, she didn't need them.

Tyres on the otherhand will wear out, so why not buy them now and keep them 'in stock' until you are ready for them?

Go for it! You could always put the two tyres that have decent tread on them on eBay?

They need to be fitted today or tomorrow for the offer.

Probably a waste of time seeing as though they are Bridgestone and everyone hates them when new let alone a part worn.

Do all people advocate having the tyres with most tread on the rear? I could just swap front to rear for now and wait for the next tyre offer but then I'd only have 3mm on the rears.

That's what I'd do, you'll still have 3mm on the rears in 6 months. The Michelins may well be better but there's life in them yet!

Just been reading a couple of internet articles where they say you shouldn't rotate back to front any more. Hard to tell if it's just the tyre manufacturers or tyre places saying this though.

I’m going to state the obvious but ensure your price comparisons are fitted or not fitted.
I found Costco cheaper than Blackcircles until I realised Costco did not include fitting.
Also google BS promo codes. Sometimes will get a further 10pc off. I did in Jan 18.

Yeah the price I've seen is fully fitted at Costco. Works out at £103 per tyre less 20 quid so 83 a tyre fully fitted.

Not sure but I've been doing it for years including on my GTI and I'm still here to tell the tale! 5-6mm on the fronts is too much to waste in my opinion, 3mm is the least I'd go to but is well above legal. You might get nearly a year out of them depending on your use.

Some manufacturers recommend fitting new tyres to the rear of a car. The theory being that understeer is easier to control than oversteer.

The thing is - the majority of your braking is done by your front tyres. On a front wheel drive, better tyres on the front result in better grip for acceleration too.

My preference has always been to have the best tyres on the front.

I have enjoyed the grip from my PS4 tyres. However, I do find them noisy. Though probably about the same as the Bridgestones.

The fronts will need replaced soon. I estimate they will have done 14k.

I just use the supplied jack and pop the spare on as I go round, works just fine but certainly a trolley jack would be quicker, easier and involve less bloodshed from the knuckles

And I agree with Daz Auto. You sound like a sensible driver so I really can't see you having any bother.

Was just thinking the same method Watts 👍.

Daz not a lot of people mention the noise from ps4's so something to consider, cheers.

I'm sure I read a review that had noise as a negative, but can't find it now.

I was reading the audisport.net forum earlier. They are also discussing this tyre offer. Here is what one person said - "Just swapped my old PS4 tyres for goodyear f1 assy 3 , I always thought I had a wheel bearing gone but now realise it was the old PS4 tyres."

Agree the PS4 is not the quietest tyre.  I swapped new S001 for new PS4 (with no alignment adjustment) and found the Michelins not quite as noisy as the Bridgestones.  PS4 is similar in noise volume to Conti Sport Contact 5, but a higher pitch. Both were quieter than the S001.  But all these are performance tyres, so by their nature will be noisier than touring tyres.

Found the review I was looking for - http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2018-Auto-Express-Summer-Tyre-Test.htm

"Auto Express magazine tested ten 225/45 R17 summer tyres, using a VW Golf at the Continental test facility in Uvalde, Texas."

Michelin PS4 - "Negative: Noisy, relatively high rolling resistance."

Goodyear Eagle F1 AS3 - "Positive: Well balanced tyre, excellent curved aquaplaning result. Low rolling resistance and quiet."

This explains why the audi driver I quoted previously, noticed the noise difference between these 2 tyres in particular.

Well I've moved rears to fronts and given them a good clean. Gtechniq W6 to try and shift some of the brake/iron deposits and a thorough clean. Phoned national tyres who are local to check how much they would charge to move fronts to rears and he said 26 quid as all four would need rebalanced again. Told him I didn't want them balanced do he said they wouldn't do it  I might invest in a trolley jack for the next time. Just been out and car drives perfectly.

What a load of rot from the tyre dealer!

I can understand him *recommending* you have them balanced but in all honesty if they don’t make the car shake like a dog taking a dump prior to swapping axles then they’re not likely to afterwards.

A trolley jack is a good investment.
You don’t need to spend a fortune and they last forever with just very occasional use.
I have a second hand one I inherited that’s probably older than me (ancient!) and covered in rust. Still does the job and much quicker to use than the VW jack.

I've swapped my wheels over twice a year when going from winters to summer tyres and back again, and always rotate front to back while doing so. Never needed a wheel balancing yet.

And yes, a trolley jack has been a worthwhile investment

Definitely do not need to rebalance tyres when rotating front to back!

I know people recommend the SGS engineering trolley jack but for occasional use is a cheaper one just as good? Looking for one with a case ideally, my ex wife kept my previous one and that one had a nice case with it. Can't remember where I bought that one from.

I've got a SGS engineering one, 2.5T - had it for many years and works perfectly! Highly recommended!

Haha, she gave it away. Would rather not engage in conversation with her.
