General Road Noise and Front Disc/Pads cost
« on: 06 November 2021, 19:24 »
My first post on the forum as a relatively new 2014 Mk7 Golf GTi PP owner!

Loving the car and working a dream but noticeably more road noise than any of my previous cars. I am running 19" Santiago's with relatively new Goodyear Eagle F1's which is much beefier than the wheels on any of my other cars.

So what's the experience of others on the forum regarding road noise?

Also, have around 30% left on the front discs/pads and have been quoted £280 by a local non VW garage for replacements. Seems a good price, any thoughts?

Hey, welcome.

Mine was on 18's and Continentals. The road noise was about the same as the Audi A4 B7 it replaced.

Admittedly the Audi is a generation or two behind, but I couldn't complain at a hatchback making no more noise than something from the A4/3 series/C class segment.

I've since gone down to 17's and PS4 tyres and it isn't noticeably quieter.

Tyre noise with wider tyres is always going to be more noticeable. When time comes to change I always look at the noise rating but these figures apply to outside the car and various factors such as suspension will affect the noise inside. Regarding brakes - always need to make sure they are working well but unless a problem 30% seems a bit early but price for oem parts and labour seems about right.

Good to know the price for the front discs/pads is fair. Am I correct in thinking a warning light will illuminate when the pads need replacing and a slight lip on the discs (2mm) isn't a concern?

Yes, price seems fair considering I see main dealer charges more for non PP version. My discs have around a 3mm lip but been told that this isn't a concern.

The vw spec is that 3mm wear is OK but needs changing beyond that. Minimum pad thickness is 2mm.

I did my own brakes and got Mintex pads and their own brand from MTEC brakes. I had the J hook discs with the black coating (no more rusty hubs) for £300ish and that was for front AND rear.

Admittedly, there's no labour to factor into it but front bakes are pretty easy with no real specialist tools required so I reckon you could buy the parts for somewhere between £150 and £200.
