Title: Other interesting cars you own
Post by: Dazie00 on 25 April 2022, 12:32
Hi Guys
Thought this might be interesting to see what other cars  people have as toys.
Ive got a 205CTI which is 32 years old now!

Wow! What a cool little CTI
I’m sure Yusee will be along shortly

I don’t own anything else interesting but it’ll be good to see who owns what alongside their trusty Golf.

@Dazie00; that looks a real stunner. Great for a nostalgia trip on a warm sunny day.

Nice looking CTi, you have to love a red droptop on a sunny day, why drive a Golf? :)

Very nice CTI.

No other interesting rides for me either. A few years back i had this aspiration of buying a house with a big double garage so i could have a little project car to tinker with. I have the house, i have the big double garage, i have no project car! Both Golf's live outside due to the amount of crap that's in the garage, the joys of living with 3 females who like to hoard stuff...........'just in case'. Still, i'm biding my time until the mother-in-law departs this earth so i can have a good clear out, maybe then the aspiration will be complete lol.

@Dazie, fantastic! The perfect pair- mk7 golf and old school pug 205 GTIs.

I have an 88 F 1.9.. what a car!

Both keepers for me.

Added to the collection of “ keepers” yesterday, not a car but this…

This really is a toy. The 205 I put to good use, not sure I can find use for this.

That’s me done now, for interesting vehicles to keep- not least because the wife will throw me out.

Nice looking 205, Dazie. Seems to have had a wheel change?

Ok it’s the wife’s not mine but her 6 year old (2016) Polo Blue GT which I still drive at least once a week and she still absolutely loves

Family wagon is an XC90 hybrid. Hardly ‘interesting’ but the 2litre 4-pot is both turbocharged and supercharged with 310 bhp, and the electric motor adds another 97 bhp.

400+ bhp and 0-60 in 5 seconds in a 2.5tonne 7-seater is what makes it interesting!

I bought the golf to replace a 997.2 911 (summer car) and Kia Rio (winter car) as the 911 was barely being used and seemed wasted having all that cash just sitting in the garage, plus the kids have got too big for the back.

Got to say - in a straight line the Golf is probably quicker than the 911, just no fun in the twisties.

Similar story for me, spent my life striving to get the house with double garage, had it all planned to get the garage painted and kitted out with decent lighting to detail and work on the cars.
By the time I’d got the house, the garage ended up filled with crap (kids amassing stuff before moving out, then moving back in again, then moving out again ad infinitum) and I just can’t muster the enthusiasm for the cars anymore. For years I spent whole days at weekends washing and waxing, nowadays even a two hour wash and vacuum seems like a major chore!
Instead I cut my working hours right back and decided I just want to retire ASAP even if it means a smaller house and crap car. At least that would stop the kids moving back in…

A mk5 Edition 30 because 2 Golfs is better than one, right? If I had more space I'd have a mk2 GTI but they're at the stage where they're more of a project than I'm after.

I've had some interesting cars but the only other car currently in the household is my OH's Lupo. Even I have to admit, it's not particularly interesting. About the best I can say about it is that it has been incredibly cheap to own and even after 19 years, the depreciation hasn't been that bad!

VAG all the way in our family.

Although i dont actually own any other interesting cars the Mrs has a lovely A1 S-line black edition in Arrow grey - fully loaded with flappy paddles which is like a little go kart, my daughter has a Polo Blue GT the same as Sootchuckers wife's, but nowhere near as clean

Nice looking 205, Dazie. Seems to have had a wheel change?

It came with the pepperpots, always loved the 1.9 wheels more so picked up a 2nd hand set, got the peppers. refurbed recently so banged them back on, looks better with 1.9 but original with 1.6 wheels, love your toys , had a couple of 1.9s bak in the day and they are crazy money now, thought the CTI was good value and something a bit different but those 1.9s hold a some very fond memories for me

Yes, the CTIs can be picked up relatively cheap. More importantly, much easier to find a good one as many have had an easy life.

The cost of purchase didn’t bother me. What seemed expensive 3 years ago seems cheap today.

Better than money in the bank!

And as enjoyable, usable everyday transport, there’s nothing to beat it.

In that sense, I’d call them a bargain!

This is the other car in the family. I bought it in 2015, ran it for two years and then passed it onto the Mrs.

It hasn't been perfect but has been a good car overall. 2.0 170bhp diesel.

My brother-in-law is an independent Alfa mechanic and self-confessed Italian car nut so would fully appreciate your car, he stopped watching Top Gear because they said something bad about Alfa's. They do make some nice cars but he always has a steady stream of customers!

A good Alfa specialist will always have a good supply of work. Not because the cars are necessarily bad, but because good specialists are a rare thing and the dealers are generally useless.

McLaren 570S

I've toyed with the idea several times and friends who have gone the route have fallen over themselves to stop me swearing they'd never do it again. How has ownership been for you?

I am slightly disappointed in myself that I don't get as excited over Mclarens as I perhaps should?

I know a few owners, one had a 570S for a few months,,,,,he replaced it with a 981 GT4 and is happier!

Something about the grass being greener etc....??? :)

I won't say never again - and it is a box ticked - but I could not hand on heart recommend buying one.

Interesting. I struggle to get excited about the latest and greatest these days. I was in my local VW dealership yesterday and it had a Taigo and T-Roc on the sales floor. They looked unutterably dull but the price tag wasn't.

Are you thinking 718 or 981 if you go GT4? I passed on my build slot for a 718, thought of switching to Spyder but I object to having to spend the sort of money you need to get the sound fixed on the 718. 718 feels like a cynical marketing exercise - bit like what BMW did with the 1M. It started off as a skunkworks project and then just turned into cynically capitalising on the cache of the first.

I think if I had one to do it all, a 991.2 GT3 Touring would be it for me. Prices are absurd on all of this at the moment though.

I'm not sure I follow, the GT3 Touring doesn't have rear seats, so the rear space could be seen as all storage rather than seating?
Since my first in '94 I have always had CS lightweight 911's without rear seats, it's surprising what you can fit in! ;)
Title: Re: Other interesting cars you own
Post by: sjw on 27 May 2022, 08:15
Yeah, maybe that's true. I always think of the rear seat as somewhere for my dog to sit, so no rear seats always equals no storage in my mind at first thought

Previous owned Pork have included a 911 3.2 Clubsport (1/53) & 968 Clubsport, both had Porsche fitted rear storage area in place of rear seats, this was basically a carpeted flat wooden platform with useful cubby hole storage below. A shame they don't use this on the latest 2 seater 911?

Well, the inevitable happened. An 18 year old with little mechanical sympathy resulted in the silly power Fabia shatting its gearbox. Within a few days, it was stripped to a husk and all the silly bits that Fabia boys go mad for were sold, bringing in enough cash to buy a 2008 BMW 730D. Not the stereotypical choice of car for an 18 year old, but pretty cool in my book. Surprisingly cheap to insure too.

Depends how big your dog is first of all. It's a problem that many have encountered before. I remembered a Rennlist thread from a year or so ago (https://rennlist.com/forums/991/1200627-rear-seat-luggage-dog-carrying-modification-3.html) and someone was pretty committed. I've tended to use a harness to ensure the little guy isn't flung around but tend to prefer to take the CSS - fun but he has a basket and a bit more space.

TBF, I didn't turn it down, I said I'd rather have it transferred to an RS build slot.

I don't think the 718 moved the game on enough for me TBH. I've had a full Manthey conversion done to mine so as 'objective' measures go, it gets round in the same time and most of the aero advantage on the 982 comes in at speeds that the car would rarely see on the public road. The rest of the differences are all relatively subjective, certainly not night and day. Still love the looks of the 718 Spyder though but would have to change the exhaust. Doesn't have much emotion or character. Sign of the times.

Any plans to get a 718 in the garage?

Cheers lads! My dad has had his fair share of cars all his life so I guess that’s where I get my passion from  @Watts I agree with you! Absolutely timeless classic.

The E31 is amazing to own, despite its extremely low fuel economy it always brings a smile out whenever driving. I’ve driven it a few times and I think it’s fair to say that for its time I doubt anything felt as good!

The only difficult things come as part of maintenance due to its age but as long as they are taken care of problems only really arise once in a blue moon. I would definitely recommend owning one if you ever come across the opportunity, whether the 840 (4.4 V8) or the 850 (5.0 V12).

Would not call it interesting as such but we have a lot of love for our 14 plate A1 S Line Black Edition Mythos Black 185 BHP S Tronic

Its the perfect second car, lovely smooth engine and changes, extremely nippy, and on the rotor 18" wheels with privacy glass, really looks the part, nice and stealthy, and the cabin materials are so much better than the present A1 models.

My S Line A3 were a little hard in ride, but this A1 is quite smooth and more so now we have put P Zero all around and economy is excellent.

My only criticism, and that's likely as come from the TCR, is that the steering could be a little tighter, its perfect for the around town, but when come to some of favourite roads its a little more vague than used to.

Due to previous owner not doing many miles and lockdown, plus its own 2 nd car duties, its only done 20,000 miles, and we were going to sale to raise part of the funds to keep the TCR, but now that's not an option, can see us keeping it for quite a while yet, though wife keeps talking TT and so there maybe on a whim exchange in a few years? in which case, someone would be getting such a good car for quite small money given age, but not use.

Sure we not unique, imagine there is loads of circa 10 year cars out there with FSH and little mileage, and so great purchases for a fraction of original cost, but same driving experience as when drove off forecourt.

Sure we not unique, imagine there is loads of circa 10 year cars out there with FSH and little mileage, and so great purchases for a fraction of original cost, but same driving experience as when drove off forecourt.

Looks lovely, good to see some enthusiasm for smaller cars. A shame they never did a true S1 in the spirit of the Group B car. Think Clubsport S in A1 guise and 250bhp.

Having said that, I don't think anything like that will ever happen having watched a woman in a car park yesterday manoeuvring an RS Q8 (perfectly competently) but it was like watching a yacht dock and even then, it was hanging half a metre over the end of the bay. Contrast made worse by the fact that she must have been all of 5ft 6-8in and was on her own. I'm surprised she didn't get lost in it.

Not unless I’m having a significant out of body experience.  I’ve not seen another on the road myself in months!  I’ll check the garage tomorrow.   If it’s missing I’ll be on my way to Stourbridge..

I did coincidentally buy my previous Bora PD130 from Stourbridge..

Haha, as I drove past i was a bit surprised to see who was driving.

Nice car. Always liked these mk1s. Not so keen on the mk2s.

Hi Guys
Thought this might be interesting to see what other cars  people have as toys.
Ive got a 205CTI which is 32 years old now!

I will always remember seeing a guy with one of these near where I live. It had been tuned to hell and back, I'm guessing 500bhp. He flew down the road and stopped as he needed to reverse to let cars through due to other parked cars. He reversed it so violently that his wheels were spinning in "reverse" but gripping hard for a good 20 metres in summer weather. The engine must have been bolted directly to the chassis as there was zero wheel hop, or it was an old rally car or something. Either way it was insane!

Talking of fast heavy cars - I was lucky enough to test drive the new Aston DBX 707. Launching a 2 tonne plus car with 707bhp in 3 seconds was a very bizarre feeling. The launch control is a AMG system and it is violent! Apparently, Aston have done a 2.95 to 60mph with one person in the car. Very bizarre feeling and left me pretty speechless  Sadly, this was £242,000 out of my price range  And no I wasn't tyre kicking technically, a family member owns loads of Astons so we are allowed to go to all of the unveilings and test drive all the cars.

Following up the DBX 707, I have a 2017MY DB11 V12 as our weekend and long trips car. The infotainment is prehistoric, but it's lovely to drive and very smooth. Can't find any pics though I can upload!

I somehow managed to blag a test drive in one of those in 1988. Those were the days when you'd look through the adds in the paper, find something you fancied a go it, turn up and the dealer would hand you the keys.

I turned up at the local Ford dealership in the early 1980’s; 22 years old and driving my 1.1 Fiesta. The salesman gave me the keys to their sales manager’s fully loaded XR3 to take out for an unaccompanied drive. That was my first experience of driving a ‘hot’ hatch (although at around 100bhp it wouldn’t even even be luke warm these days ). That experience felt a bit special back in the day, and I somehow doubt a 22 year old would be let loose unaccompanied in a dealership’s modern day hot hatch demonstrator now.

I get to drive a DB11 quite a lot as my Pops has one. People don't realise how brutally fast Aston's have become. I have driven loads of different fast cars over the years including Lambo's and Ferrari's etc, but the DB11 is the only car I have driven that gets me shaking with adrenaline when hooning it! It's an animal! I can't imagine the DBS.

Yes, being RW drive only, the wheels will spin in most gears, if pushed too far. I take it off the road from December to March, as I don't trust myself to control it in icky conditions

I've had the car today!  Those big fat tyres are scary in the cold and icy conditions. They deserve to hibernate in the winter to protect the beautiful paint work haha

Beautiful!!! I always wished they bought out a modern Beetle R with 300bhp, that would have been ace! I think it would have sold well.

Love the Beetle
Proper labour of love it must’ve been to restore too.

As for the Beetle R, they did an RSI Beetle many years ago, very limited LHD only production using a 3.2 VR6
https://www.autoevolution.com/cars/volkswagen-beetle-rsi-2001.html#aeng_volkswagen-beetle-rsi-2001-32-v6

They did do a Beetle Turbo too towards the end of its life so a shame they didn’t use the Golf R 2.0 even if it would have been FWD like the Scirocco R
