Title: can I replace just the tensioner ?

Hello All
Last GTI I had was a mk2 many years ago now, thinking of buying a mates mk6 at 82k it's still on the original tensioner but has had the water pump and inlet manifold replaced, car has full vw history, I think I've got to the place where if I get it, I will replace the tensioner for peace of mind, here are my questions

1. Is it worth keeping the 100% vw history by having them change the tensioner ?
2. Can you just get away with only changing the tensioner ?
3 what can I expect to pay at dealer or specialist ?

what year is it?

replacement at an indy is around £400, wouldn't bother with VW dealer for this one as they're clueless (or don't want to admit there's an issue with it  :grin:).

As Rick says you can just replace the tensioner. When being replaced it is worth getting the garage to check the chain as well. These can stretch and while the engine is stripped down it is worth a check. Approx 5 hours labour for strip down and rebuild.
