Just though I'd put up some pics showing what it was like when I first bought it and showing what I've done to it along the way until now. Will add new ones in sequence when I get the time!

I spent over 3 months looking for a decent solid one that wasn't chavved up, in good condition and had a decent amount of history. It had done 96k miles and had a lot of history including every MOT since new. It needed a bit of TLC as you can see-especially the paintwork which was rather mat in finish and the black trim was rather grey! The interior was pretty good though.

You'll see various nice interiors along the way until the near the end which is the one that I'm keeping!

Here's when I first bought it and the end of July '05:

Clay-barred the whole car, then masked up the black trim and started the Meguiars 3 stage cleaning system. This still wasn't enough and the shine wasn't there, so went over the whole car with Farrecla G3 (bloody hard work that was!), then G10, then then the Maguiars 3 stage system. Also fitted some crystal M3 style rear lights, the crystal headlights from my old CL , some MTS crystal front indicators and crystal side repeaters with black seals-the white ones go all dis-coloured after a while! Also fitted some German plate holders with new no. plates, a Kenwood stereo and Boston acoustics front component speakers.

This is as it was in September '05:

Added an original GTI front grill with a mark 4 Golf GTI badge and fitted the In-pro crystal spotlights from my old CL. Raised the rear coilovers as the rear was lower than the front, fitted a tinted window set with new rubber seals and laid the rear wiper flat.

February '06:

My GTI was used in a recreation of the original Golf GTI ad of the late 1980's for Granada TV's Best TV ads ever no.2. which was shown on TV last July. They used the original model/actress Paula Hamilton and filmed it in the original location. I even got to meet her and  and she signed an original GTI sales brouchure that I had!

Early Spring '06.

Part of the exhaust needed replacing and I wasn't happy with how the standard rear box looked so I bought a Jetex full stainless system:

Was going to get some new alloys, but suddenly found that every supplier of them in the UK had sold out! So would have to wait a while!

Fischer CD holder, Momo gearknob and pedals:

Phoenix gold multi-channel amp inside rear quarter panel, JL sub in temporary box and Hirshman aerial:

Gave the engine a clean and new battery cover:

Had a new tinted windscreen with top tint fitted and I also fitted some black front indicator lamps that hide into the bumper more:

Finally my wheels arrived in late August '06!

Also got some black leather Recaro speed replicas:

An Auto acoustics sub box that mounts in the drivers side of the boot (not as stealth as the Audioscape one but probably better with the sound due to more space for the sub). The sub was for a 12" sub, so ended up selling my 12" one and buying a 12" JL sub and a JL sub grill:

And Boston Acoustics rear 6x4's to match the Boston Acoustics front components:

Rear leather seat to match the front seats:

March/April '07

Decided to sell the leather interior as it ended up costing far more than I though in the end (had got new door panels done as well, but never fitted) and I decided to keep it looking a bit more standard, but I wanted a nice interior in place!

I came across these seats, but they needed valeting, a bolster repair on the right drivers side for which I bought a new Recaro bolster and a pair of GTI seats in the same material as donor material for the bolster! The seats came without door cards, so I had to by another GTI set in the same material just for the door cards!

New Momo steering wheel:

Electric wing-mirrors which I'd had for a while, but took a while to get hold of the loom!:

I finally got the interior I had been after for quite a while- a very rare Edition one 16V Recaro set! I nearly bought them from John last year, then regretted not buying them and missed out when I decided that I did want them again, as Vaughn beat me to them! Luckily he later put them up for sale when he got his G60!

But before I fitted it into my car, I needed to bring it back to it's former glory!

Here's how it was when I first got it:

Driver's side front door card.

This is what came out of the interior, even though some of it wasn't too bad!:

Did some fibre-glass resin repairs to the bottom of one door card. It had loads of rusty staple in, plus a few bits of card and it was a bit soft in places. Also stuck the material down where it had lifted in a few areas:

Finally got on with sound-proofing my boot as I wanted to try and make it a little quieter and also ready for the audio upgrade. I've probably gone a bit OTT with some of this, but what the hell! It should help a little more and certainly won't be worse!

The original post '90 spec foamy type boot side carpets with the black shelf supports and shelf:

Decided to give it a long overdue proper polish and as I don't normally polish it as much over the winter due to no shows and not so good weather, so I wanted to give it some good protection for the winter months. I used Farrecla G10, then Dodo juice Lime & prime pre-wax cleaner, then Meguiars show car glaze sealant no.7, then Chemical guys Jetseal 109, then another coat of the same 20+ minutes later, then Collinite 845 wax insulater wax and another coat of it a day or so later. I masked the black trim off as with polishing the car several times there was a high chance of getting polish etc on the trim + it makes it quicker as you don't have to be so careful around the black trim if it's masked off!

First I did the driver's side, the back and inside the hatch. I didn't do it all in one go as I knew that there was no way that I'd do it in one day + it would take quite a while to mask the whole car again!

Secondly I did the passenger side and the front, then the third time the roof! I also managed to restore my sunroof felt that I had previously thought was knackered as it looked hard and sometimes had green stuff growing out of it! Most of all this came off and mostly looks like new now!

Just got my new rear 7x5 speakers to replace my existing 6x4's. Gonna be a git to fit with a fair bit of modding! Going to also need to lower the top of my Audioscape boot side sub box!   This is the difference between the 6x4's and the 7x5's:

4.) Well I had the lovely job of cleaning out the bolts threads to get the excess paint out from when they were powder coated. Had to do a bolt up and then undo on all 120 holes! Took bloody ages because of the paint at the top of the thread hole made the bolt go in crooked at first sometimes, so had to keep undoing it until they went in straight! Spent an hour on Tuesday night on one wheel, an hour and a half on Wednesday night on another wheel, 45 mins on Thursday morning and then finished the rest on Thursday night and built them up from 8pm that night until 6am Friday morning with only a break for a meal in the evening!

Got them put on on Saturday morning, but found that one front looked a little flat yesterday morning. Pumped it up again, but looked flat again a while later. Torqued it up to 18lbs (had done them at 15), pumped it up again and it now seems fine and not gone down. Might torque all the others to 18lbs now.

Here's the pics before on the car. They are 1 1/2" and 2" Schmidt Radinox stainless steel lips with stainless steel bolts.

I tried to get a new one of these but they have been obselete for a while, so I had to sort my current one out!
This is how it was looking a bit faded!:
-the light bits are where it's faded and are the areas that were not covered up by the bonnet and open to the elements.

Here's the job done:

August 4th.

Spent a fair bit of yesterday getting the floor carpet out (while the rear seat and door cards were still not back in after the respray) to do some more soundproofing. Had the front Recaros on the path, the vacuum cleaner, the heatgun, loads of tools etc around, then it sodding starts raining!  Had to carry on or I wouldn't have enough time to get it all back to drive it to work tomorrow! Ended up putting black dustbin sacks over the Recaros and vacuum cleaner to keep them dry! I got quite wet though!  <_<

Got to finish it tonight and am putting some new under-felt as the original was damp and falling apart, especially at the front! Pics tonight after I've hopefully finished it and put it all back in!

Here's the last of the soundproofing:
Got all the seats, under dash trays out, centre console loosened & moved back, side trims and carpet pegs etc out:

With the rear part of the carpet out showing the original soundproofing:

With the original soundproofing out and floor cleaned:

With 2 layers of sound-deadening added:
I was going to completely remove the front part of the carpet, but there was still the sectrion behind the centre console and wiring to the electrics in the centre console, so left it in but replaced the soundproofing that was on the floor.

With some tec-lite neoprene foam added:

Used the original under carpet felt as a template for some new carpet felt:

Covered them in some thick dustbin sacks cut up to prevent them from holding moisture if ever getting damp:

Well, the annoying vibrating rattling from behind the dash was the loose wiper arm as it is fixed to the 3rd blanking one, so I cut that off on Saturday after having bubble wrap around it as a temporary fix. The shaking up the steering column, is I think warped front discs (the surface is certianly uneven anyhow) and I have new ones to go on. Still got to fix the horn, outiside temp connector that is hanging down, the windscreen washer, the rear seat-belt that fixes to the C pillar and the wiring for the drivers side lights-front and rear. All things that were fine before the respray!

Wasn't too amused when I got back to my car from where I park it in a residential area when I'm at work as I found out that the local grass-cutting contractors had decided to cut the grass right by my car! The grass was wet, so even after a 27 mile journey home, the grass was still stuck all over it like glue!  :o  It was pretty clean before, but it took over 2 buckets of shampoo to get the sodding grass off!

Rubbed down the front slam panel, primered it, then sprayed it in satin chassis black. Took ages to mask up and was tricky to do because it was a bit windy and kept blowing the paper about!  Also had the various washers and screws powder-coated in satin black to stop them going rusty like the pevious ones!

Also got the horn, windscreen washers and outside temp sensor sorted, driver's side light wiring is being sorted tomorrow, then it's just the rear seat-belt to sort out-prob get another replacement, as it just won't work!

Had a problem trying to update it on here for a while as it just wouldn't  work, so hopefully this will now the site problem has meant to have been sorted out!

Going back a few months I found out what the slight groaning noise noise was when I was moving along slowly. Thought it was something with the brakes and was on the way to a friends when it seemed even worse and was even moving the steering wheel every so often. Anyway, had just gone around the corner from home and though I can't go much further with it like this! A guy who I had just passed who was walking along stopped and walked up to me and said did I know that it looked like the car/wheels were not moving quite right and I said yeah, I'm just going back home to look!

Anyways, I go just down the road from where I live and park on a flat surface to jack the car up. I jacked the front right side up and took the centre cap off to find two bolts not fully tight!   I dropped the car back down and drove the car back and then forward again and it seemed better, but still not right. I then went round the passenger side to find this:
-The centre cap nearly off, one bolt fully out and waiting to drop out and another bolt half out!   I thought bloody hell, that was close as a little further away from where I live I was about to have driven down a very steep hill! All the times I've taken wheels on & off and never had a problem, so I guess they bodyshop didn't tighten the bolts quite fully enough!

Then the other problem I had was shuddering when braking, again thought it was the brakes and was told probably the discs as I knew they were getting old! Anyway, they were well knackered and pretty scored, but had knackered my new Black diamond pads which was pretty annoying. Don't know when the pads were fitted, that they didn't say that the discs were shot and should be replaced!  :undecided:

The last problem was that I was getting a little twitch when driving and it seemed to come from the rear. I could be going along normally on a stright road (not booting it or anything), when there was a little twitch a bit like a tiny skid if you hit a little bit of ice. Was really unsettling and meant I had to drive quite carefully without putting my foot down, especially in the wet!   Found out what it was when it went in for the MOT-turned out to be a loose front bolt in the passenger side wishbone! I fellt the difference straight away after it was tightened up!

The car then failed the MOT on the rear driver's side seat-belt which was annoying as I had just fitted a replacement that I'd just been sent from a VW breakers! It also failed on a split steering rack gaitor and because it had no side repeaters when it passed without them at another garage last year (didn't want to go back to that garage though for various reasons!)! Was a bit of a problem though as my new G60 wings came without side repeater holes!   Had to drive to the VW breakers to find a seatbelt that worked, then fitted that, got the steering rack gaitor fitted, another set of black diamond pads fitted, then had to pull the side repeaters through to the front scuttle area and taped them to the top of the front wings just for the MOT re-test!

They will now remain there hidden until the next MOT! Got the MOT at last!  :)

Sorry to hi-jack, but if the car originally did not have side repeaters, then it should never need them as long as it is within the years specified. I think the MOT station did not know this and I would have challenged this with the ministry if transport. I did this once regarding a rear fog lamp amongst other things on a Q plate South African import. It went in my favour. Worth persuing if you think you are right, especially if it has passed MOT's for the last 18 years without the repeaters.

It originally had side repeaters and did in the last wing, and passed teh last time with the badges in place of the side repeaters, but these new G60 wings never had side repeater holes for some reason!

Got the new wider 2" radinox stainless lips and 205/45x15 tyres the same as the rears, so as had to rebuild them, decided on a colour change of the baskets! Had to buy a set of new stainless bolts, as one was knackered and a few were quite marked. Tried everywhere, but couldn't find any the same, so had to buy a new set!

March '09.
Well, now have the major expense of a gearbox rebuild!  :(  Had a noise that started after 15 minutes or so of driving-sounded a bit like the noise you get when you need a surpressor on your stereo! Also couldn't find the gears twice and there were spots of oil flicked up on the underside of the bonnet. Turned out that the diff bearings have had it and the oil was being flicked up when the drive shafts join-of course because of that the gearbox oil was low.

So the gearbox is being rebuilt and having a new clutch & clutch cable (the bite point was high anyway so on it's way out) + am getting the flywheel lightened. Also needs a needs a new rear wheel bearing.

After that stuff is done, I then need to sort out what's up with the Alpine head-unit or Audison amp, as first there was no sound coming from the speakers connected to the amp (but the amp seemed fine), the the head-unit wouldn't switch on!

Will be glad so have everything sorted!
Yeah will dig them out and scan them in for you. Contmeplating getting a cheap bug as a project again actually. Would do it much more in keeping with "the german folks" look this time though.
Yeah, I kinda wished that I'd done mine more that way now, as the custom bits ending up costing so much and took so long that that is the reason why it hasn't been on the road! If I'd kept in more standard, but with different wheels, engine and lowered etc, it would have cost about 1/3 to 1/2 what it has done and I would have been enjoying it on the road!

Here's the lightened flywheel:

Won best water-cooled at Stanstead VW show back in April:

My boot all done. Custom-made Audioscape style sub-box with Hertz 10" sub. Had to be custom-made as I have 7"x5" Hertz speakers in place of the original 6"x4" speakers, so as the larger 7"x5" 's hit the top of the previous Audioscape sub-box, I got a custom-made one made by Ken (Trouble-starter on here).

Here's another little update! After just over a year my audision amp stopped working properly!    Managed to buy an Audison LRX4 for a good price on ebay and got that put in my other side inner rear quarter panel.

Got to send off my SRX3 to be repaired shortly, so will then have 2 Audison amps!  But need to sell a few bits first to pay for the repair. Just hope it's not too expensive!

I was going to re-paint the centres white again, then wasn't sure, then before I fitted them, I decided to go for some different wheels! But by April as the new wheels were going to take longer to do and I had sold my RM's, what with the shows starting I decided to fit the 001's and put on hold selling them until my new wheels were done. I sold the Nankang tyres as they were a bit too stretched for my liking and I fitted the 205/45x15 Toyo Proxes tyres that I had over from when I sold my RM's.

Well, on the bank holiday at the end of May, I went to the Asda's near me and after doing my shopping, I was sitting at the traffic lights to go out onto the dual carriageway. Got bored waiting like you do, and when I looked up, they had just changed to green. Drove off at usual speed as not in a hurry and just as I was going round onto the carriageway and just straightening up, next thing I next this other car just came from nowhere on the right and crashed into the side of me!   Didn't see it coming or anything!  Turned out they ran a red light and luckily I had witnesses! Not amused and had also had it booked in for the show & shine at Stonor park in a few days! Anyway, here's the pics:

Hi there,

I'm the chap with the white MK2 at G2B, gutted to see your latest post, so sorry to see the damage. Is it just the panels that were hit, no sill damage???

Bet the people that hit you didn't have a clue of the work that's gone into your car, compared to the dullard box they were in, your wheels are worth more than that rice box

Hope you can get it back together soon.

ATB

Jeremy.

Hi! Well those pics were back at the end of May,  so it's still how you saw it on the No-rice run, but this is how it was before! I've been playing catch-up with my posts from the beginning! Don't want to do non-stop posts, then nothing! Takes a while to sort, edit and upload all the photos too!

Enjoyed reading what you've been doing to yours-some the same kinda things I've been doing to mine! Don't think I'd fancy refurbing spoked alloys myself though! Getting my 2nd set of RA's refurbed to sell at the moment. Would love to keep them, but need the cash. I did have a set of RA's, but they are stuck in a unit rent dispute! The person who was renting the unit refused to pay the rent as he wasn't able to use it for it was meant to have been used so the owner of the unit seized everything he had in the unit including my RA's!

Phew, glad to hear they were old images. Re-furbing the RA's is certainly time consuming, it's taken about 4 hours to sand down each wheel so far making sure i get into every tiny area on each spoke.

Still havn't decided whether to paint the lip silver and the centres anthracite or just stick to OEM silver for the whole wheel.

Well I bought these 16" RS008 and RS009 in 7" and 8" back March 2010, so started getting on with these! -Strip-down, sold the ally lips that were in good condition, used the bolts & nuts on some RS001's that I sold and got the centres sent to Jeff Payne to do the welding and re-drilling job.

Centre's back from being painted in original BBS straight silver at Lepsons in Gillingham: http://www.lepsons.com/

I had the barrels done black as you don't see them and they get covered in brake dust & dirt straight away which you can't get to clean without taking the wheels off!

One of the 2x 2"x16" stainless lips from a seller called Scene wheel parts on ebay (also got 2x 1.5"x16"): http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BBS-RS-16-x-3-stainless-steel-rim-NEW-/220675028242?pt=UK_CarParts_Acc_Wheels_tyres_Trims_Car_Rims_ET&hash=item336141b512

First one nearly done-the bits of blue tape were so I knew which bolts had been torqued up:

First one done! Never knew they'd been 5x112 before eh?!

2x205/40x16 Falken ZE912 tyres-not easy to get hold of and only found one place that could get them!:

I only put the 2x 8” ones together first as I didn’t know if I was going to use 8’s or 7 ½’s on the front, so thought I’d try the 8’s (that were going on the back) on the front to see how they fitted:

Although they just about fitted on the front, they were very close and as I wanted to lower the coilovers, which there would be no way I could do with the 8’s on the front and I didn’t want to cut the original G60 wings/G60 wing liners & arch trims or go for tyres that were more stretched, so decided to go for the 7 ½’s on the front and keep the 8’s for the back.

One even needed no weights at all for the balancing! :) :

and the 8’s with 205/40x16. Forgot to mention that I also fitted short-stem stainless valves:
