I've just realised I'm reading the Mk7 forum and I have a Mk6! I think the Mk6 can take bulbs if you buy the right canbus-safe ones.

I keep looking at these, I think they look quite good in the dark but I don't really wish to take the door cards off the 7.5 to get to the wiring behind

I thought you could get some that ran off batteries but I think I might have made that up. Sure there were some on eBay.

Can you get the footrest cover from superskoda for dsg?

They are actually narrower than the standard black plastic DSG one as meant for manual cars. So, no they aren't technically the same.
