2019 oil spec
« on: 07 May 2021, 08:06 »
Not had much joy with the search. Just bought a 2019 gti performance and noticed vw 508 0w20 as the oil spec in the manual. Is this what folks are using or is there an approved alternative?  Many thanks.

This threw me at first when I read this in the handbook... I called my dealer and they confirmed that I should use 504/507 5w-30, the 0w-20 is only used to provide better mpg figures (less engine resistance), I don't think I'd want to run my engine long term with oil that thin.

I’ve recently changed the oil in my March 2020 TCR (cars just done 10,000 miles and it was telling the oil wasn’t due a change for almost another year which didn’t feel comfortable with, call me old fashioned !) any how a quick call to my local TPS and they supplied me with 5w 30 long life fully synthetic quantum oil (in a environmentally friendly cardboard “cube” along with filter and new sump plug (made of plastic and really quite a clever design, think the sump is also plastic). Nice easy job on the whole and for what it cost I’m a lot happier knowing it has fresh oil in despite it having “long life oil” in. I’m sure lube technology has moved on but for peace of mind I’m sorted.

I use 5w 30, as does the dealer. I’m also an old school pedant when it come to oil changes - every 6 months (ish) - probably OTT but peace of mind (sort off)

At my last VW service they used Shell 0W30 but it was 5-30 before that.  :undecided:

I'm due to replace the oil in mine in the next couple of weeks. I'm gonna use Castrol EDGE Titanium 5W-30, as recommended by my local dealer, as they didn't have any of the Quantam oil in the snazzy 4litre cubes.
Andrew Chapel (Volkswizard) has a good video on his youtube channel regarding a DIY oil change; it's worth a look.

Careful now I was recently chastised for saying I do every 6 months/5k miles whichever is sooner

I use Millers Nanodrive 5W30

My GTI is 30 months old with just over 10k on the clock, it’s had 3 oil and filter changes.😄

Thanks for the responses. Vw508 sounds good to me. I have used 5w30 in previous cars and they last well. Our mk6 gti (10 reg) has had no problems for 85k. Like AdamT7 I usually do 6 month/5000 mile oil and filter changes.
