MK4 2.0 GTI - fuel Comsumption?
« on: 20 December 2005, 15:52 »
Afternoon all, can any one help me out with some fuel consumption figures as I'm seem to be going trough a lot a petrol. I know a lot of it's down to the way you drive and the terrain but I'm only getting about 180 to 200 miles from £40 of fuel, my driving is spent 50/50 between around town and on the ring roads + I don't drive in lead boots! I have a 1999 MK4 2.0 GTi ( 115BHP) 3Dr thats covered 88K.... does this seem about right or should I get it looked at?

I appreciate any help you can offer.

Happy Christmas  :santa:

i have a 99 2.0 gti, mine has 103k on the clock, mine LOVES to drink that petrol also, mine averages on 32mpg on motorways, and depending on where iam driving i can useally get 280miles on £40..

but i have found out that using crap petrol makes it drink it faster than it should do, i used to put normal unleaded in it for the last 2 years and it drank it like it was going out of fashion, but recently i have been putting shell optimax in, yes its more expensive but i seem to get more miles out of a tank, and the needle doesnt seem to go down as quick, i had to put sainsburys super unleaded in last week, just a tenners worth as the light came on, and it drank that very quickly, and yesterday i had to put tesco 99 ron in as the shell had no optimax and it drank that quick as well, there is something strange but good about shell optimax me thinks lol  :smug:

Thanks for that... I'll give the Optimax a go and see if it's any better.

Check the exhaust for holes or bad joins, as leaks will drink the petrol no end!

ps I get about 240 to a tank on average, but I've got a fuel card so don't drive the most, erm, 'economically'!

 LOL  You'd think so, wouldn't you!!!

Fill it up once a week. 40 mins to work & back with some spirited A & B road drives, not much traffic, tho...... And then some pottering about when the missus is in the car at weekends etc.

Best ever, was 11 MPG when I was a bit late for work one morning!

I average 34-36mpg in my 1.8t. Usually about 350 miles when the light comes on. If I'm just 'trundling' along in traffic at 30-60 it will easily return 40mpg on a trip.

The 2.0 is less economical than the 1.8t though, but your economy sounds pants...

BTW it is usual to be worse when the weather gets colder, as cold start drinks fuel..
