Title: Adi's GTD
Post by: tsr_adi on 30 March 2011, 15:14
Well some of you are aware that I sold my GL project to move onto something new. This is my 9th mk2 now, and it's my 1st diesel one. This came up at the right price (those who know me will know it wasn't a lot), come with Tax till end of July and MOT till the end of September, and 218k on it. It drives spot on, is on early hottuning coilovers, and its true what they say, the earlier ones are a much nicer ride, it doesn't crash and knock your teeth out, the ride is actually superb! It has remote central locking, red stripe 90 spec GTI interior, and surprisingly the intercooler has ALL its plastic shrouds :)
3 things broke on the ride home though, a fuel tank strap, the backbox fell apart, and a plastic arch trim nearly went flying! I've since screwed on the arch trim, removed the backbox and I'm picking up a gti one tonight, and removed the hanging tank strap. Only other thing to sort is the rev counter, as the wire has broken off the alternator. This is how I got it...

Then today it went down another inch or so and I've red striped the bumpers. You may notice its missing a backbox, I took it off today cuz it was falling apart, GTI one will be on it tomorrow. Also picking up a mk3 shift rod and small splitter on sunday, and hopefully new wheels this weekend. Heres how it looks now...

The shell is fairly rusty and IMO some bits aren't really worth repairing, so when the MOT runs out I may look into buying a cheap GTI with no engine and re-shell it :)

New face, front splitter, new lows, new exhaust, mk3 shift rod fitted and I found these under the boot carpet :)

And how it looks now, with my roof bars I kept from the GL, oh and I red-striped the bumpers, but ran out of vinyl to do the grille

I remember my GTD, was a good little car. With your GTI exhaust, did you mod it to fit? I had to angle grind and reweld to align the centre section to the GTi box. Pretty straight forward.

Yea, it was a nightmare cuz I haven't got a welder, the over axle pipe where they normally have a box meets the backbox at a totally different angle doesn't it! I fitted a straight through centre pipe I had lying around and a gti over axle box with the gti backbox so it all fit OK and kept 2 boxes instead of 3. The GTD is an excellent car for a stone age TD lump, can't believe I didn't own one sooner!

Yep, that's the issue I had when I first looked at it I had a screaming hangover! So left it and done it in the workshop at my old work. The power kick when the turbo kicks in is impressive, pretty good given the age of it.

I can't wait to get an EGT and boost guage so I can have a proper play with it, I expect big power gains from what I've read on the vwdiesel.net forum. I've adjusted the max fuel screw slightly and removed the trumpet from the airbox and the "whooooshhh" it makes on boost makes me smile  I've also blocked the Overboost protector on the inlet ready for when I do wind the boost up. My mate drove it before I adjusted the fuel screw and he said it feels quicker than his standard 8v gti! Not bad for a 70bhp motor, but I reckon the torque is deceiving...

Quite a bit has happened on this, I've fitted a boost guage where the drivers side air vent is, fitted a manual boost controller, I've worked out how I'm going to fit the intercooler in front of the radiator on the passenger side, just need to source 2 more bits of pipework, its now running 17psi peak, which is as much as I can run on a standard HG. The pump has been tweaked slightly but now its running high boost its not getting enough fuel, so next week I'm going to shim the governor so it gets all the fuel it needs and it should be pretty lively  I've also lowered it another 20mm.

lol i like the idea of a GTD or maybe a 1.9 PD powered mk2 but allegedly its a ball-ache of a conversion

I was seriously considering one of these a little ago.like you say, considering their age they're decent usable motors with scope for tweaking.

Its so worth it when you can run it on veg oil (as long as you can get it from a wholesalers in bulk a lot cheaper than diesel), insurance is cheaper than a GTI too. Tbh it puts more of a smile on my face than my GL did

Veg oil... the best oil is rapeseed as it has less water in it, even better is filtered used oil as there is no water in it... When I was in my early 20's I ran a pug 405 TDI on it with 10% diesel and it was fine.... However I had less cares in the world then so don't get busted unless you plan declaring it.. the only reason it's cheap is because you're paying tax on food rather than fuel.

As far as I'm aware theres nothing illegal about running a car on veg oil, as the tax has been paid (unlike running it on red diesel). Up to now I've been using filtered used veg oil out of our deep fat fryer, it doesn't miss a beat and smells slightly like a chippy, but thats probably because it has more diesel in it than veg oil at the mo. Is rapeseed oil cheap? And if so where can I get some? I'm always looking for a cheaper way of running it

Not updated this in a while so here goes...

A window got smashed due to thieving scum

Replaced

A friend gave me a retro period CD player

Then some tuning happened. I shimmed the main spring in the governor 4mm, and ended up with a right nightmare getting the throttle lever back on the right spline on the governor shaft. I've got it set up OK, but I'm convinced its got more to give as my max fuel screw still has 6 threads left to go in, but for the time being I'm happy, it peaks at 24psi and goes very well indeed. And the turbo noise is EPIC!
My idle spring-less governor  :o

Red striped grille

A random shot of the intercooler, soon to be moved to the front of the radiator

My MBC

Also got bored, so I fitted the worlds favourite catch can  :D

Then a few days ago I painted a red stripe on the 4 lamp grille and gave it a bit of a change, and stuck on some awesome stickers!

Believe me I was! The replacement window only cost me a fiver and I'm lucky my roof bars are on, they tried bending the top corner of the passenger side door out but obviously couldn't get their fingers in to pull it out enough cuz the roof bars mount there. Cheaper to replace a broken quarterlight than to replace a whole door!

Sorry for not updating this more!

Intercooler now lives up front like so

Its been off the road for a few weeks as an inner CV imploded and I lost drive 25 miles away from home, where it stayed outside a mates house until I got AA cover and got it home. Here is the damage comapred to my new driveshaft

Also I finally got back a set of wheels that were on one of my previous mk2s I had years ago and sold to my mate. He changed the wheels and these sat in his garden for years, and I got him down to a sensible price, and now they live on my GTD :)

Up next is an oil change, gearbox oil change, and some new wishbones as lows eat bushes!

I had a set of those Enzo Cups on my last mk2.

Theyre quite rare, but not in a sense. Theyre identical to RH cups and Brock B2s but these are 15x7s. Its a good job the GTD used to run 9s and has well chopped arches, otherwise it would be scrubbing like a b!tch, its very very close on the rears as it is!

Bummer about the shaft (i really should sort mine!)  :lipsrsealed:

Cars looking good, not sure I could drive round with a spot missing though although I understand why you have done it, perhaps find a suitable intake trumpet thing to put in it?
Title: Re: Adi's GTD
Post by: tsr_adi on 09 July 2011, 14:17
I think an intake would look worse tbh, from the right angle you can see how exposed the intercooler is to the airflow, I reckon an intake would probably make it less effective. I do have a single lamp grille but the grilles aren't slotted all the way across like this one is if you get me so it wouldn't get as much airflow as it does now with a big gaping hole
