Title: Nearly got side swiped - vid
Post by: TheCarMadDad on 06 March 2014, 10:33
As the title suggests, someone forgot to check his blind spot. One of only a handful of times I've gotten a twitchy arsehole behind the wheel! He did put his hand up to apologise, good job really cos I was ready to give him a right round o' f**ks!!! I admit we were both to blame. I shouldn't have been in his blindspot and he should've checked said blindspot. Lesson learned.

I was joining a dual carriageway from a slip road. The slip road becomes part of the dual carriage way and creates 3 lanes. I stayed in the left lane because I was coming off at the next junction ¼ mile away. I was doing 65mph.

Here's the vid - http://youtu.be/ms_EpYPiKZ4

Looking at the road markings, you were undertaking. Yes he should have looked, but you shouldn't have been there. If I were you, I'd take that video down straight away.

No reason to take it down. I didn't accelerate, he slowed down. My car hadn't overtook him when he moved over. I admit that it wasn't solely his fault and that we were both to blame. I've just taken it as a lesson learnt

Perhaps it's just me, but I appreciate that we all do things and make mistakes, but why tell the internet about it?

There was a thread a while back when a member posted a video of his new car being involved in a minor accident, then a follow up one of all the damage that had occurred as a result. Now if that was me, I would have preferred to have kept all that to myself.

Completely off topic. But wasn't there a guy on here four or five years ago who posted a vid of his 2.0mk4 doing top speed. Then got banned from the police?

Yeah I see where you're coming from but it makes for good debate and this is a forum. Anyhow, i'm not ashamed of showing my poor driving  and it may make someone else think again if they are ever in a similar position

IMO I could see that coming a mile away and I think you should have slowed down a bit.

Being in silent stealth mode could have been a contributing factor.

To be fair that was a stupid manoeuvre, that is why you don’t undertake

I think also being gutless and running out of puff like an asthma suffer could also be a contributing factor lol!

Quite simple, you should have backed off until you knew his intentions, and thats probably what the driver of the van had thought you had done! My right foot would have been instinctively off the gas, and hovering over the brake pedal
Just one of life's little curve balls sent to test us on a daily basis... that day, it was your turn!

I agree I would have instinctively slowed and waited and probably undead up in the right lane behind the transporter. 4/5 days anyway... On a "drive like a prick" day I would have been well past him on the inside.

All the comments of serves you right and so on.. We have all done something similar at some point, it's life's driving experiences

I'm amazed that he managed to break the speed limit :lipsrsealed:

My mate does that haha.  used to make me slightly nervous.,...but now im used to it.

In regards to the thread.  I really cant fault the van driver at all.  You came onto the main road, from the slip-way, and was constantly in his blind-spot.  he probably did everything correctly in terms of checking his mirror, indicating and proceding to move into the 'turning off lane' however because you merged onto the road at a speed greater than that of the flowing traffic, id say puts you at fault for intentionally sitting in a place where you cannot be seen at his mirrors, and should he have carried on, not wanting to change lanes, would have undertook the van driver.

Just my 2cents at end of day though....luckily no casualties r damage caused...just experience gathered!

I have to say undertaking is wrong BUT i must point out that there are roads/motorways were undertaking happens because you cannot help it. We all know that undertaking is agaisnt the law however it also states that if for example your in the slow lane doing the speed limit and the person to the lane on your right is doing 10-20 mph under the speed limit and you do not have the means to move into the overtaking lane then you can undertake. Yes i think in this occasion both drivers were in the wrong here

It is not illegal to undertake if you are travelling the speed limit.

You was not in the wrong at!

You are doing nothing wrong! You're traveling the speed limit, you're in the right lane because you are exiting.  The other vehicle should of indicated for a lot longer time before he maneuvered.  He has windows and should have looked over his shoulder to check his blind spot!

At this moment in time im trying to become a police officer and I do want to be a traffic officer. Trust me by law you are doing nothing wrong if what you say is true!

If that vehicle was to have had a collision with you, he would be in the wrong and his insurance would have to pay out. No questions or argument!  And would be even easier with that video evidence.

Have a nice day!

No such thing as "the slow lane" there is only overtaking lanes.
Speed limit on dual carriageway/motorway is 70mph. The roads are 2/3/4 lanes to meet the demands of traffic.

You can do 70mph in any lane. If that lane happens to be the left and you undertake a slower moving vehicle that is a over taking lane then there is no law saying you cant do that and the slower moving vehicle should move over.

If an accident had happened and you showed the footage, I think you'd end up being blamed. Yes you joined, the speeds were similar, but then you accelerated slightly to pull along side for an undertake where you should have actually overtaken instead. You may have been coming off at that junction, but the lines (at that time) didn't indicate a total separation (i.e. solid line or closer together) so has to be treated like a normal 3 lane motorway. Personally would have hung back and either waited, or hung back, over took and back in. Never remain in a blind spot or next to the lorry if you can help it. Having said all that, we've all done similar and fortunately you both were quick enough to react.

To be fair, if you were in a proper car you'd have arrived at your destination long before this incident unfolded.

And regardless off what the law says, which most are unaware of, common sense dictates it's not wise to undertake at all. Too much of a risk.
