Stock Performance Pack disc and pads

Service today has advised front pads and discs need replacing soon as they're 70% worn. I was expecting this with the pads, but not so much the discs. Anyone have data on the thickness of new OEM parts, so I can work out the thickness left? £750 quoted by VW and £710 by an independant specialist to replace with genuine parts. Not sure whether to go with genuine or aftermarket.

I know there's a few posts on here about aftermarket discs and pads, but any recent updates on these or recommendations?

I found the genuine VW one's scored really badly at the rear, largely I guess because of the parking brake; when they needed replacing I got some non VW ones and they haven't scored at all, despite the same parking brake, think you can do a lot better than genuine. I can't remember what make they were but I'd steer clear of VW one's as they wear awfully :-(

Many manufacturers make OEM parks for VAG, Pagid being one of them.

I opted for PAGID replacements for mine, and had no problems whatsoever (ensure you bed them in correctly, as with any brand). There’s a couple of brands, that’s make OE braking materials for VW, have a bit of a google and you will find it, but Pagid are easily available to us in the UK.

Mine is running circa 320bhp - with the PP setup, I’ve not outperformed the stock materials as of yet (it’s never tracked), so from my POV, I’d throw another set of OE’s on - at a fraction of the price VW are charging!

I run the VW Clubsport discs and pads I think that lot comes in under £500 IIRC from dealer (fitted by myself). These are obv a premium over the standard Discs and pads, but shows how much your quote is. Any dealer or local garage charging £700+ are ripping big time. Imo 

I wouldn't touch Pagid from Euro Car Parts personally (some are happy with them), but if you can get ATE or TRW that would be better, lets say a notch up from Pagid.

Thanks all. Reason for my question was I'm not in a rush to get them changed as I've got a few things to pay for on top of the service today (spark plugs, tyres all round, brake fluid, air con, and investigation into diff fault)  MOT is due in April so wondering if there's enough life left to pass that.

I have wondered how good the genuine ones are. Not had any complaints myself but haven't tried any others and they're a massive step up from my previous car anyway.

The Clubsport ones do look mega, especially when they're looked after as well as yours, but a premium as you say, not sure it's worth it for me at the moment sadly. Maybe next time!

If going for a different brand, is it worth doing all four corners rather than having mixed in each axle?

If you have OEM already, then there’s a good chance that they will be one of the 3 brands listed above. Whether you choose ATE, TRE or Pagid, all 3 are commonly used as OE replacements, and for the most part only subjective differences - down to personal preference essentially.

So, if you plan on doing your front axel, you should be absolutely fine putting any of the above on with OE rear pads/rotors.

For reference, my front pads/discs have done about 30k miles and are still within spec, according to my local lookers. The only thing that would give it away, is some rusting on the rotor face. Again, I’ve never had issues with Pagid, but that’s my experience… hope I could help somewhat

Just had PAGID discs and pads fitted to the front on mine, £324 all in at my local indy. 

Had the rears done last summer so PAGID all round now, no issues with them so far.

I put VBT hooked discs on mine with Racingline pads, blooming brilliant.

Thanks for the comments all, some nice looking brake setups there! Just reviving the thread as I had a brake check recently to screen ahead of MOT in a couple of weeks. Was advised front discs are fine, but front pads are 1.6-3mm left, so of course they need doing if they're towards the lower end of that range... I'm curious though as don't these cars have brake pads wear sensors? I've not had anything coming up on the dash yet, does anyone know at what thickness it's usually flagged at? Is there a chance my sensors are kaput?

Disc pads less than 1.5mm thick are a dangerous fail regarding an MOT.
