Stop/Start Still Stopped
« on: 15 September 2021, 10:11 »
I bought my one owner GTI at 7k. It’s on 9k now. Stop/Start has never worked. Previous owner told me he had fitted a new VW battery (due to lack of use) but I was getting low voltage warning when the car was stationary so, as precaution, I bought another new Yuasa battery via Halfords and got them to code it.

Nothing has changed. I’m car display still says power consumption is high, even with everything turned off. I don’t want to pay VW a fee to investigate - any idea how I get this remedied?

Do you have a dash cam or any other accessory fitted that might continue to draw power from the battery when you’re not using the car? What type of journeys are you travelling and how often do you use your car? If your car is used infrequently and on predominately short journeys, those two conditions aren’t the best for good battery health.

You may ultimately need to get the cause of your battery drain checked out to avoid having to keep replacing the battery, which is likely to cost more than paying someone to investigate and determine the cause of the problem. If you don’t want to pay main dealer prices, you could always go to a good independent VW specialist or a specialist auto-electrician, which might be cheaper.

Just going of track record here, did YOU see Halfrauds code it or have they just said they coded it?

Another possibility is that the threshold voltage has been raised, using OBD11, or similar, to prevent stop/start.

Maybe a stupid suggestion but is the wee sensor wire plugged into the battery?
I unplugged for a while to disable the S/S but ultimately reconnected it.

That probably wouldn’t explain the high power consumption though that @Refurbished refers to in their original post.

Sorting the high power consumption must be the first priority. If you have a multimeter you could disconnect the battery and reconnect with the multimeter set to measure current and remove fuses one at a time to find the faulty circuit. Long process but could find the fault.
My stop/start was throwing up errors and identified the neutral position sensor was faulty. There is a vw bulletin for a software update on the 7..5 to fix it and not replace the sensor. This could be the other issue?

My thanks chaps. I’ve bitten the bullet. Going into my local VW dealer first week of October. I’ll advise the result.

So, to round this weary take off- into VW. The lights were telling the car they were always on making the car think the battery was low. Which it wasn’t. They have fiddled with software only. VW unwilling to assist - car out of warranty (Reg Nov 17) but full VW history and 10k miles. Now resolved £216.
I never needed a new battery which is irritating. Have a VW OEM unit I don’t need. Might be handy if. Ever need a spare I guess.

Sorry to hear about the expense and no help from vw. That seems to be typical these days. Make sure you keep it 'topped up' if you are keeping it as a spare.
