Changes eh? No one likes them do they. Forum had been running very out of date software for a while now. I had put off upgrading because
(it's well scary, man) the last forum theme was not compatible. So for ages I had been messing about with a test site, trying different designs etc. The old theme wasn't very 'crisp' by current standards and didn't look all that great on mobile devices.
Feel free to be grumpy and moan etc but I reckon this is working pretty well now, might just need some minor tweaks along the way :)

The only thing that I preferred previously though was unread topics being marked in bold. It seems there isn't any difference shown now between read and unread topics.

It could be alot worse ...... :grin: give it a week no one will even notice ! Only thing thats annoying is the pictures being massive and having to scroll side to side to see every bit of it but i think it was like that before

Forum should now attempt to re-size images posted - only new ones, it doesn't go back and address old ones.
Sig pic limit introduced, upped to 700 by 150 as that now fits in well with the layout.

Gotta say JV Coming from running my own forums for a number of years I know how much hard work goes into updating a database and changing skins for that matter :rolleyes: If you need help with any graphics id be happy to help out just send a PM and i'll see what I can do, other than that your right I dont like change buuuut...... Not my cup of tea. The colours aren't easy on the eye with the fonts being used.
I would have used a blue instead of the orange, and had a crisper font.

Thanks Nino, it's mostly all done now. Location is still a profile field but is no longer displayed by default. It might have been a mod to put it there on the last one, have some vague memory of that!

It would be handy to have it back if possible as I know for a fact all I'll get asked "is where are you based"!!
Like the overall look but I dislike the font used on the main pages - I find I have to read them twice as they aren't the clear to read due to the squashed font...
pity about the picture size's but I understand the need to have them smaller... can it be done so that if you click on them it would open up the original uploaded size? Just so you can look at them in more detail??
Still think we need more Smileys.... you could stick another 10 on without upsetting the reply page.. :wink:

I keep forgetting I've upped the posts per page to 50, then get a little confused when it takes ages to scroll down the page. :laugh:
I think the location field mod would be a neat touch to add, as when perusing classifieds I always look there first.
Is there the option to put that field at the bottom of the front page to see 10 most recently replied to threads back? I miss that. :sad:

As a quick fix to the location, add a line in your sig but yes, I'll look into that.
The thread title font is the only real thing I had concerns with, I've changed the size from the theme default to make it less squashed already!
Pictures will only be re-sized on loading so you can always right click 'open image in new tab' style - the images are still wherever they are.

The most recent posts is a suggested big impact on homepage load time so that went a while back. Huge list of birthdays have now also gone for the same reason. Spent a lot of time going through the performance improvement stuff for hooj smf forums so don't really want to go back.

Looks great, it's still the same user friendly forum we are used to, format, locations of threads etc. As far as pictures go, since I've been here I've always shared 800x600's as its a good all rounder. Not too small a picture and usually guarantees snappy load times and full visibility. Nothing worse than a thread full of big pics that either a) take longer to load or b) make mobile viewing a pain.
Although I wish the site wasn't so narrow, I understand the reasoning. I must say that it looks great on the phone.
So when are you supplying picture hosting space again then? :laugh: :lipsrsealed:

Odd font was the only thing I wasn't sure of, particularly the weird letter K's! All swapped out now, Chrome developer tools are just too useful :grin:

The clocks have changed. The clock on the forum, saying when so and so posted X about Y and the clock in the bottom left hand corner of my laptop don't match up! My phone, internet based, and laptop match up but the forum ones seems to be about 90 secs ahead...My OCD just hit a new level. :lipsrsealed:

Not a fan at all look wise, prefer the old color scheme, everything seems more bulky and I hate the width issue its like I have two huge grey area's each side and a little table of 2inches wide for text bang in the middle, if I wanted to read things that narrow I would of used my phone.
However I do enjoy some of the new features.

Why would making the site completely sh!t get more members? I joined this site as it was the one I liked most and thought looked best, now it is as crap as the rest, I don't mind change to improve things, but I hate things getting changed and being worse because of it, I will certainly be on here less because of it, I did like using this site, now I just can't be bothered with it, either have the problem that golf-sib mentioned where there is a lot of wasted space each side or the page is too wide for the screen and I have to scroll side to side to read posts.

Think about things such as how easy it is for users on high resolutions to use the browser zoom feature versus how annoying it is on small res screens to have to scroll about the place. Ponder the expansion of tablet devices and how even they have wildly different graphics resolution. It goes without saying that you need to allow for a plethora of mobile devices but I am sure that was obvious to you.
Next, look at SMF2 themes, build yourself a test website and try out different designs. Remember you are likely to need to customise extensively, perhaps even contract out some of this work.
When all that is done, come back and present your design conclusions. How long do you need?

I just noticed that posts now have keyword shopping links.... This is where certain words in a posts become clickable links to other websites.. I was about to say this would be annoying if someone were to post labelled hyperlinks in the same post but then I realised this only happens to guests.
Not sure what I've said even makes sense but I know what I mean. :grin:

Not an issue, but for those with OCD. If you hover around the page over posts, profiles and when selecting the page numbers the page jumps slightly to the right. Ever so slightly that is.

I am using IE8 - can't use anything else as work won't allow. Reset Internet Option too and still have the same issue.

Can't see it. There was a similar issue at the start where the way the page gets centred wasn't allowing for when there wasn't a scroll bar on the right so the centre of the page was changing to two different places.

Can't see it. There was a similar issue at the start where the way the page gets centred wasn't allowing for when there wasn't a scroll bar on the right so the centre of the page was changing to two different places.
To be fair it's very hard to be perfect on all browsers and devices, this site was and still is a very good all rounder with anything I've ever viewed it on.

Didn't take that long to get used to IMO.
