Title: 1984 Mk2 5 door project (G60)
Post by: ian_GTI on 18 August 2012, 14:38
As most of you have seen a few of my build threads intend to get board quite fast

But I'm hoping this will be a keeper as the missis is going out of her mind with me changing my cars all the time :)

So here she is I will be picking it up next week when I'm bk in the UK

Only got the crap advertisement photos

But it's a good soild base to start the big build

It's a 1984 5 door 1.3cl 2 owners from new 76k and pretty much the only thing electric is the stater motor :)

Wow, an A reg Mk2. Please say you'll keep the small bumpers? Such an early car needs small bumpers.

Apart from some G60 steels and collies the outside will be staying the same just a good clean and maybe a respray in a more modern white

Havent really done much to the old girl yet as work has been flat out

But since the new engine and running gear will take a few months to finish I thought I would mot and tax it just for a bit of fun

After a bit of a clean up
Fitted pressed plates

Also managed to find a new old stock golf cl badge :)

And since the suspention was completely shoot I fitted the collies

Good to see works started

Outside is pretty much there then apart from wheels and chrome trimmed rear bumper

You sorted the speedo or does it still say 85 when doing 60

Post by: ian_GTI on 09 September 2012, 13:34
Yeah the speedo is very optimistic lol

Not that it makes a differnce as I have to swap the clocks for gti ones when the engine goes in anyway

It will be going in for paint aswell inc new under seal etc

Since its rot free I would like to keep it that way :)

Time for a update!!!

Well as quite a few have been asking rob about what's been happening with his G60

Well here it is:

After years of me trying to prise it from him I finally did it :)

Then i had to find a car for it to go into and that was the reason for picking up the mk2

The plan is to run the gti running gear and wide track

But the body and inside will stay as Standard as possible

This is going to be a nut and bolt rebuild that will start around the end of February as this will give me time

To strip, inspect and recondition the mk3 parts I need for the build

Also my 2nd child is due in 2 weeks so work will be slow for a wile as well

Anyway here's a few pics of today's work

Well after stripping the mk3 down I was trying to work out how to get it out my unit with no wheels etc (the door way has a ramp to get over

So I decided to halfs is the best way to go lol

Then laid out all the useful parts that need to get painted etc

Gave the engine a bit of a degrease but still a long way to go

Mk2 is going to be an epic build

Seemed a shame to cut the mk3 up as I am sure it was a tidy one

Yeah the mk2 should be quite nice when its done

The mk3 was good on top but a bit to rotten to be worth saving underneath

Bit of a update:

Engine block and head has been stripped and cleaned (acid dip under pressure)

Block:
All oil and waterways cleaned
New piston rings & oil rings
New small end bearings
New crank bearings and balance
New big end shells

Head:
New valve guilds and seals
New springs
Valves re seated
Cam oil seals

I'm waiting on crank oil seals and a new crank pulley that will be drilled into the crank and dowel pins fitted to stop the stress on the keyway

Here's how it's looking
