Title: Nurburgring crash videos - a gentle reminder....
Post by: Diamond Hell on 11 January 2013, 10:17
... that if you're going out there at all to drive the track, that it can and will bite your backside - and very hard.

BMWs at Pflanzgarten not braking before, or after the jump:

http://youtu.be/TiKXGr3tTqo

An object lesson from Adenaur Forst in what not to do when you've had an accident - drive off without even checking if you're leaking fluids:

http://youtu.be/U5dYGZ_7RFE

Someone in a Civic getting Adenaur Forst REALLY wrong:

http://youtu.be/OueADaFqyBk

A demonstration of people getting Adenaur Forst wrong from 1970 (please excuse the weird period intro piece, it IS worth a watch though):

http://youtu.be/dWlF4sT0HWs

Some bloke giving me a tickle at Schwedenkreuz:

http://youtu.be/05Aq0___M74

Not entirely sure where this is, but it shows just HOW over-committed people get, even in a CR-V:

Feel free to add to the list.

A long way to go in order to write your car off & end up with a massive armco bill.
If that doesn't put you off, there's the fuel bill to get there & back, the price per TF lap...

There are enough tracks in the UK to enjoy & learn.

done a few uk tracks in cars or on bikes.

Took part in a fateful yet most entertaining trip to the ring with 6 lads off here last year.

The road trip out there, the whole time out in germany, and the V close call were ALL part of a trip which

1, i wont forget

2, i will do again ( hopefully missing out one part  ) well 2 if you count the sh1ts

I dunno - I think next time we'll have to really get a move on when travelling out there - see whether Dave can still have a dump in each country, with reduced time between stops.

And you'll avoid the bloody egg sandwiches at the services next time, too.

Or go when there's more daylight.

Driving into the Eifel region as dusk falls is gorgeous - I've done it before.

Well yes.  Now do that towing a car.

I drove back in one day from Le Mans

Well yes.  So did I.  In a van.

Need to save some pennies and get myself to the Ring  :undecided:

Well yes.  See you this autumn then.  Chuff will give you directions and a rough idea of costs.

140mph sideways video capture = winning.

No - they make it out of Germans.

Remember - they have to remove the old stuff and put in new stuff and charge for the track closure if relevant and charge for the safety car and the recovery and and and .....

Here's three and a half minutes basically of wincing:

Doesn't look like much, I flattened a total of 28metres of barrier (about 9m of barrier 3 beams high) and 5 upright posts were bent. Plus marshall attendance, flagging, they charge you for all of it. Then recovery was another 220 euros on top.

As harsh as it sounds, I'm a civil engineer by profession, and 3k for that much barrier to be removed and re-installed with new gear isn't a bad price at all sadly :(

same rules apply in england too, if you crash on the road you're charged for the barriers, difference is, your UK insurance deals with it all so you never even know about it.

Love the civil engineering approach to crashing at the 'ring

A mate of mine who's a civil engineer has said the same.

as an ex aircraft engineer - the small amount of air time was sufficient in my cherry taking crash at the ring

Didn't look like you fecked up 9m worth of barrier though.  You sure you wern't milked for previous damage.

Unfortunately it was all from my accident, despite only hitting one car length section, it was pushed so far back that it stretched and ripped the bolts out of the two adjacent sections as well and bent the uprights supporting them.

Got pics of the barrier damage somewhere as well. Despite being a bit in shock at the time, looking back they were really fairly reasonable.

what was the death toll in the 70s? Car safety looks to have moved on quite alot too!

Bloody high i would imagine considering how many people were flung from their seats in that video clip.

Bear in mind that's a compilation of someone standing there on the peak days of the year during that period, at one of the most popular locations to have an off.

Of course, there will have been significantly more injuries in that period though due to no belts and cars being in the main designed so badly that they did really odd things when they got out of shape.

Looking at the amount of crap that fell out of that honda i'm staggered that anyone can just rock up and throw the same car that they did their shopping in that morning round a genuine racetrack.
