Carbon fibre on a Golf GTI from the factory and an illuminated VW badge at the front - as if the light bar on the 8 wasn’t stupid enough

‘The GTI can also be ordered with carbonfibre exterior applications for the first time’. These prices are going to shock potential buyers imo

I think you’re right in terms of the price.

As for the facelift, I think it’s a little underwhelming, but then that’s VW’s typical approach to mid lifecycle facelifts. I dare say most people who aren’t Golf and / or GTI enthusiasts the wouldn’t even realise the mk8.5 is a refreshed, facelift model.

I’ve never been a fan of the light bar and IMHO the illuminated VW badge is a bit tacky and just a step too far.

Let’s just hope VW have ironed out the software gremlins that have plagued the mk8.

Actually thought the MK 7 mid life cycle was beyond what would expect with the digital drivers display and vastly improved media units, and styling wise the change of lights and DRL were a major win for GTI, where the red stripes always looked a little awkward, but then really integrated brilliantly in the MK 7.5. The enhanced gloss black vents and trim over the MK 7 were good plusses also.

On the MK 8, its going to be interesting to see present MK 8 owners thoughts on the screens, I am personally pretty neutral having not dipped into MK 8, its not the worst screen seen in a car, at size and position looks ok, and it does have some styling with curves and bevels.

My interest lies whether it all just works without multiple glitches, as that would make a MK 8.5 an option down the line, where as kind of excluded the natural moving onto a MK 8 due to the issues, as much as know many have been sorted, just know I would still get a lemon used.

EDIT: Just specced Style up with Pan Roof, upgraded wheels, DCC and few other bits, and it was over £37k! Definitely going over £50k with few of the desirable options on GTI's and R's

Had conversation with colleague who like me has always gone company car route, and likes his cars, and is up for his cycle of change, and there is very little cars on there now, allowance for car has only minimally lifted, the car lease prices have taken huge jumps, removing most cars of worth off the list, you just do not see them, no GTI, R or anything of that like, and even vanilla cars are requiring uplift over allowance.

His other route is to take allowance and go down own path, but again, finance prices would mean he would have to add some  quite significant £ to get something half decent and in June his mortgage jumps £500 so he has tried to extend his current lease without luck, and so it will be used car only as a replacement and we are talking, a profession, good middle income earner who would have with ease, and without hesitation be in market for an S3, GTI or R as his changeover.

Think its the finance deals that affect folk most in decision, how much paying a month, so even if car price was much higher, its still the money paying per month focus on, but higher car prices and high APR is making new untenable for many many more than previous.

I think I must be getting too long in the tooth… the prospect of an above £50k Full Sticker Price for a Golf really is too much to swallow.   Will wait to see how the Mk8.5 pans out in the real world for a good while before I consider changing my 19 plate R.  Although unless there are some super deals from the likes of Drivethedeal and Motorfinity  my R might be staying longer  in our garage.

After having performance golfs in a row there is no way I can see myself changing to another. The price increase in combination with the higher interest rates just makes it silly.

The topic of mk8.5 pricing does create an interesting question. What does everyone think will happen to mk8 values? Traditionally you’d expect the pre facelift prices to drop when the facelift hits the market. But if it is the case the facelift pricing is outrageous, would the low mileage/ later build pre facelift examples actually hold money well as they could be viewed as a bit of a bargain?

Going from historic Golf model changeovers the outgoing models often keep their values pretty well owing to the conservative nature of VW buyers and build times akin to continental drift.
After a few years of very strange market conditions whereby used cars went up in value and now have nosedived I wouldn’t want to gaze into my crystal ball right now @clarky.
My Clubby still booked at £30k last September and by mid-December had shed a further £8.5k at standard book prices. My current R at 3.5 months old will have lost £10k minimum and more likely £15k so hopefully won’t bomb too much further with the 8.5 launch  not that I have any plans to change even if I could remotely afford to (unless I decide to become “economically inactive” and buy an old sh!tter to run on a shoestring which is getting more tempting by the day)

@Exonian I’ve been looking at Skoda Yeti 4x4s to run as a daily, now the prices are on the way down. Partly to minimise wear and tear on the clubby, and partly to reduce fuel costs. A trip to Scotland this week and my wallet is barren now, I’d forgotten how cheap Costco fuel is.

Maybe some dodgy man maths at play there Doc as it’d take a lot of fuel to equate to the cost of a Yeti 😁 but I get your thinking, sometimes it’s nice to have a contrast of vehicles to use.
I do love the Yeti, good looking in a Dinky Toy sort of way and tough as a Tonka! (Showing my age there!)

@Exonian I don’t know what you mean

I’ve always quite liked them, and like you said they’re reliable as all hell. Boxy means they’re great for carrying stuff (can’t fit my handbike in a golf, fits in a yeti no bother), and unlike a caddy or a transporter, it has missus approval factor too. I just wish I’d never sold my old landy. Had a diesel defender that I only sold to fund a Legacy import a few years back. Not that I could drive it any more, but it’d more than pay for a Yeti now..
