Title: backfiring during starting

has anybody any suggestions/ideas what causes my mk1 golf gti cab.to backfire during start (normally from cold) the car runs great after this except during light throttle pressure it feels rather "jerky" ??? the car is stored over the winter and has limited summer use (1500-2000 miles)  changed spark plugs, rotor arm & dist cap...no effect :-[

Have you checked the ignition timing?
